Brief bug tangent : my undergrad degree is in entomology. I think that butterfly belongs to a group called "skippers". Wing color patterns and body shape is right, and they often show a willingness to crawl up on items - including fingers - presented to them very slowly - they're not as skittish as others - and can even be hard to dislodge after they are on it.

Such an image could be of interest to a seller of Becker knives.

How about a caption for that last one: "Hi, Honey! Look what I brought home!"

Discounting the kitchen knives,
which I'd leave behind in case of a real emergency,
I now own six, but the three I'd take with me have changed.

In order of priority:

* ESEE 3
* Ontario SP53
* Manix 2 (pack back up)

Soon to add an Izula 2.

Then, I'll own 4 to go.

Kamagong, I like your taste in knives. That last big knife looks like a very elegant workhorse, and your bark handled puukko is a little heartbreaker. Scandi ground knives with forge black left on them are such beauties.

Thank you my English friend. I do have to correct you on one point however. This bowie is not a worker, it is pure warhorse. It is a quick, agile blade that was crafted to be a weapon, not a tool.

I think I'm on Kamagong's side here - there is something about SOME weapons that transcends the word "tool". I have hammers that I am particularly fond of, my father has a particular spade that I think we should bury him with, but there is something different about an object made solely as a weapon.

I have handled a lot of old swords. Some of them just sing to you on a deep, deep level. A 10th century Viking sword, still sharp despite a thousand years of rust, moved a lot of us near to tears. It wasn't just age, it was the feel in the hand. An 18th century broadsword felt light as a feather in the hand, but the slightest movement of the wrist and it begged you to cut with it. I've never felt a tool do that.

I am sure I'll love my ESEE 3 when it comes along, but it will always be a utility tool that doubles as a weapon, and in that it is just that bit less than something optimised for one purpose only. That is probably a good thing, walking around in the city today.

The thread about "Knives as weapons" really struck me because so many of the "Weaponized blades" of today ARE tools for killing. They're overengineered shanks. Gabe Suarez once said "Sometimes only ugly will do", and in that I think he is very truly missing the point.

I have a way-out-there psychological theory on this point, but I'm not about to state it on a picture thread.

I am not arguing with the genuine, OED/Webster's/Wikipedia, definition of a tool, or that weapons fall into that definition, but... "Damn it Jim, I'm a designer not an engineer", so words are a little different to me

Perado,

The bowie has a walnut handle and wrought iron guard. Made by ABS smith Stuart Branson, it has a 9 3/8" blade of W2 steel, flat ground and with a convex edge. Sharp too, Stuart said that it was a little scary to work with.

These are my very first knives. 440C stainless blades, brass bolsters/pins, walnut Diamondwood, and the trailing point has red liners.

Here is my trio, my current blade kit for camp and trail. Most of my others are being sold. (I'm a quasi-nomadic minimalist who travels a lot with no permanent 'home'; I just don't want to lug a lot of tools around.) There is at least one folder in the kit - a SAK - with a few specialized 'blades' - screwdrivers, awl, can opener, etc - and will probably include one single blade folder as back up, also, but I'm not sure yet which one will get the call.

And, yes, I need a better camera.
