37mm DD project
My big question is the engraving. From what I gather from the ATF website, I must engrave: -My name, city, and state (initials, of course) -Caliber (37mm, obviously) -Serial number What the hell serial number do I choose? What if I happen to choose a number someone is already using, and it gets kicked back? I just ordered the launcher, so I don't even know if it has a number on it (from what I found on the internet, they don't serialize their launchers, which I think its wierd). Any ideas? Has anyone DD'd a 37mm launcher before? Any helpful info would be greatly appreciated.

It's not just the serial number that matters, but the combination of serial number and manufacturer. Do you think that all the firearm manufacturers coordinate so that no two of them never use the same serial number on a gun?
If I were you, I'd just serialize it as DD001 or something of the sort.

Why miss the opportunity to use an arcane, inscrutable serial numbering system?
The first digit should be the distance from the Earth to the Sun, rounded to the nearest whole number, at the time of manufacture. The second through fifth digits should represent the weight, in pounds, of the vehicle first used to transport the weapon from its place of origin to the range. The sixths and seventh digits should represent the friction coefficient of the roadway surface on the first day of conveyance. The eight and ninth digits should be the Nielsen rating for American Dad! on the day of conveyance. The tenth and eleventh digits should be the actual sequential serial number of the weapon.

Hirundo is right. If someone else that lives in your city and state also shares your name and already came up with the same serial # for a form 1 DD, yours will get kicked back.
FWIW, I have form 1 suppressors with the same ser# as the firearms they are on.

How about a long Fibonacci sequence?
BTW...what are you going to use for ammunition since you are making it a DD? Home grown stuff? |

I'll be making some gonzo buckshot rounds, probably some wood pellet/lead pellet stuff, nothing crazy. Just something that will eviscerate birds and small animals, and maybe put a large hole through a door or something.
I'll post pics as soon as I get everything together and do some tests.

Good luck getting a low pressure round like the 37 is to get buckshot into useful velocity ranges. I have an OLD 37mm tube under my VN era SP1 and while the 37mm Star shells are interesting and some really strong "bird Bombs" I shot off 20+ years ago before I found them to be extra legal were interesting, the buck shot 40mm rounds in VN were NOT considered very useful like a good 12 ga was in my experience. I would expect buck shot to top out around 700 FPS or so out of a 37mm bloop tube, seems like it was 800 fps in the 40mm.

True that. I didn't expect anything on the high-pressure spectrum, just something that might/could reach out to maybe 25 yards if that. The fun part will be making the rounds and coming up with some wicked results. Non-explosive, of course. I want to keep my hands.
That, and wowing some of the spectators at the local shooting range is always fun to do :P I have a habit of doing that with some of the hardware I bring out there from time to time. I do plan on getting one of those nifty 12ga adapters from ASA LLC. $75 isn't a bad price, I think.

I only asked because I have one of the short 37mm Havocs that Spikes sells. It is on my PLR-16 and gets odd glances from people at the range as well.

That's one crazy looking AR pistol.
I just got my launcher in today. I'm now trying to find a pistol grip rail for it. LMT has one for their 40mm launchers and I just emailed them to see if they will work with 37mm launchers. I don't see why not... but you never know. I'll post their reply as soon as they get back to me. Also, I started on the Form 1 and I will get ahold of my engraver this week.

DD project on it's way
Got the launcher engraved for $40 locally through the same guy who did my SBR last year. Sent the Form 1 in about 5 weeks ago via Priority USPS, check was cashed 3 days after mailing to Atlanta. Called ATF last week and they said my Form 1 went pending as of 12/21/12. Let the waiting begin :P

What's the reason of doing the DD on a 37mm?

I understand you are allowed to shoot projos from a registered DD , but isn't each DD shell a DD?

I believe only if it's explosive or Tear Gas. I thought rubber projectiles were fine. Does it include chalk rounds? Someone who knows please help us!

Never mind, I see why you would want to register them as DD's.

On the ser# part as you are the maker no one else can already have the same #, unless you make two of something and try to give them the same #.
As an example I have a machinegun built by MAC and a suppressor I built for it, they both have the same serial number. One is on a form 4, the other is on a form 1 and the ser# is the only thing they have in common.

Yes, I've already seen the nasty pics of that guy that tried making homemade explosive rounds for his launcher. Nasty stuff. I would never attempt to make rounds like that unlucky chap did.
I'm only making buckshot rounds and probably some slugs. The only rounds I'm familiar with that need registering are explosive rounds (over 1/4 ounce explosive content), and they don't make those for 37mm, 40mm only. Tear gas/CN/CS gas rounds do NOT require registration to my knowledge, and I know of a place where I can get them for $30-$40 per round. They are NOT considered anti-personnel rounds; if the round is meant to be shot AT the person (baton, rubber buckshot, stinger, etc.), then it is considered anti-personnel. These rounds do not require registration, but they do require a registered DD launcher to shoot those rounds, much less possess them with a launcher. Honestly, I want a DD launcher for kicks. I want one for the collection, not to mention getting the chance to load some wicked buckshot/fletchette/whatever rounds and seeing what it does to my target. Sheer curiousity, I suppose. I've had Grogg's loading CD for a few years now, and will hopefully be using it soon.

I was very disapointed after I bought mine and found out I would have to go through all that just to fore a beanbag. Seems prety arbitrary and rediculous, I mean how is a bean bag more destructive then a flare or skybuster?

DD launcher
If you have a DD launcher, you can now shoot those flare/bird bombs at someone. You can't legally do that with just a regular launcher; if police can prove you were using the launcher as a defensive/offensive weapon, they will consider you using it as a DD and charge you as such (using antipersonnel rounds in a non-registered launcher)
Food for thought. ...and I do plan on getting a 12GA adapter (for real buckshot, and not the cheap flare adapters) from here: http://www.americanspecialtyammo.com/37mm_adapters.html $75 is not a bad price to turn a DD hand cannon into a close-range bird-squasher or door-buster (if it ever came down to it).

Called a few weeks ago and the paperwork is pending (still) as of Dec 21 2012. ATF states I should have the paperwork back in June. I finally found a pistol-grip frame for the launcher and added a few things to it:
