Any Drilling/Combo Gun Shooters?

They are my "thing". I was wondering if anyone else here has the bug?

I put a lot of meat on the table with one when I was young, had a new baby, and was dirt poor. They're an American Classic.

Here is why I'm always broke. I just received this 1955 Sauer LUX drilling with a 6XHensoldt in Suhler claw mounts, a left barrel 22mag insert barrel (einstecklauf in German) in 16gauge 2 3'4" chambers and 6.5X57R rifle, a close cartridge to the 257 Roberts. The price was right, and it was my 65th birthday, so what the heck?

I had to sell my Sauer 3000 drilling in 12ga and 30-06 to buy this gun and one other drilling...so 2 for 1.

I have had a drilling for a long time.

I used to hunt bear and grouse in VT but now there are no grouse or bear there.

Now all I do is talk about it on the net and carry it on a farm once in a while.

My absolute favorite firearm is a Springfield M6 Scout (.22LR/.410)

If the house caught fire, the family was safe outside, the family albums and my M6 would be coming out on the run back in to save stuff.

You guys that love the old Model 24's......good news....Jeff Quinn from Gunblasts reviewed the new version combo gun by Savage. It is the Model 42 (.22 over .410 with a polymer stock) Not as purty as the old 24, but looks like a real "woods" gun. Lighter than the originals too.

I keep pretending that someday I'll be able to afford a 2x16+1x9.3x74R drilling.

I like farting around on the range with my Savage 24, mine is a 20g & .22lr combo.
I particularly get a giggle out of running CCI CB shorts in it opposite the occasional 20g round

pop
pop
pop
BOOM
pop
BOOM

... it keeps the other people on the range guessing

I have a baikal MP94 in 12 ga/.308. I haven't fielded it yet, though. The shotgun barrel is very accurate with slugs. The .308 barrel is going to take some load development.

Yep

Another Springfield M6 here. The .22lr/.410 version.
I am considering the new Savage Model 42 in .22 Magnum/.410.

The Savage guns are neat combo guns - I had the "Camper's Companion" for a while - but they are not true drillings in that they only have 2 barrels.

Luv2Safari - have you looked into the drillings on www.gunsinternational.com? or the creations of Peter Hofer : http://www.hoferwaffen.com/hofer_1.php?lang=en, or Philip Ollendorf : http://www.jagdwaffen-ollendorff.com...llendorff.html ???

Some beautiful drillings, Vierlings, and more

I had two in 12ga/7X57R, and both shot very well! If you need a scope mount for it try these. They work GREAT on the Baikals!

Don't let the price fool you, these do work and seem very strong. The base is for a high powered air rifle with the heavy piston recoil; it has a top set screw to further keep it from moving.

Three, all Savage 24 derivatives....first, an original Stevens 22/410, second, a Savage 24DL 22/20' and finally a Savage 24 V in 222/20. All accurate, all game getters. I've found, after about fifteen of these things that, for me, the older ones with the rifle barrel grazed full length to the shot barrel are more accurate. The 222 will do an honest inch and a half. None have ever had good triggers.

The 24 in 20/222 is a great combination, IMO.

Oneounce...I've met Peter and helped set up his booth at SCI in Reno. He also made a mini double rifle for a display piece that is beyond belief!

I am ignorant about barrels. It seems that the more I 'think' I understand, the less I 'know'. How, what kind of magical incantation, or cyro, or talent, or voodoo allow three barrels to be regulated so POA is the same as POI?

Not intended to be rude, but waaay confused.

Thanks,

salty

Salty,

A lot of years as an apprentice under a master gun maker, knowing the quirks of combination guns from 10-40 years of working on and with them, and many hours of soldering and re-soldering barrels together and test firing them go into a proper drilling.

The newer ones benefit from technology and different design with floating rifle barrels. The Mathelon 3-rifle barrel drilling is still soldered together, and that is mastery beyond my comprehension.

The great masters even make 4 and 5 barrel combination guns!

That would be his Hummingbird. For those unfamiliar with that gun - it is a double barrel rifle that weighs 1 kilogram - 2.2 pounds
