Ruger 22/45 Rear Sight Question

I recently bought a Ruger 22/45 with a 6" barrel. I have adjusted the rear sight to the limit but still shoot low. I have shot offhand at 7yds, and off a bench at 25yds. good groups, but always low. (it did get better, at first it was off paper at 25yds.) So my question is whether there are any aftermarket rear sights for this gun. I would prefer something with dots in that at 25 yds there is soo much black my little eyes strain. I guess if not I will be sending my pistol back to Ruger as something must be off.

Please any and all suggestions, including "You just don't know how to operate that fine piece of machinery."

All with the same ammo ?

Might get the groups higher with slower ammo if you haven't already tried that.

MOST target ammo is relatively low velocity...and usually shoots higher.

And each gun is unique, some like one load while an identical gun might like something else.

Excuse for more fun and shooting. Try em all.

Winchester X-pert, Remington Lightning, Speer ??, all basically the same place. I am having a lot of trouble finding velocity for .22lr rounds. If slower is better than what should I try next? I purchased this gun to work on good shot placement for pistols (I'm very new to handguns), so this problem hinders my efforts on bettering myself. Thanks CR--I have seen more words from you in a matter of days here than in a month at TFL

I'd have to say that if you have used all the ADJ of the rear sight and you are still low, something is wrong with the gun, or how you are testing it. I'd get someone else to shoot the gun first to see if they get the same group placement.

Hmmmmm

Have someone else give the Ruger a try, and see if it shoots low for them. Also, try lotza different brands/weights/velocities of ammo. 22's can be....well, persnickety about ammo.

(my old Rem Nylon66 rifle would shoot anything EXCEPT Rem's 40-gr solid Hi-Vel 'golden bullet'. Go figure

Interesting problem GinSlinger. Try the things mentioned, especially letting someone else bench rest it for you.

There should be plenty of travel in the rear sight to bracket the X on a target as near as 25 yds. Have you turned the adjustment screw so far that it comes out of the threads? Was the gun new or used? Maybe someone screwed with the front sight? (Probably not, that would mean making it higher not the usual lower.) As far as you can tell, is the bore concentric with the barrel at muzzle and breech? (Don't laugh, it's happened in the best of companies.)

Mal may have something here.
I have a Ruger MkII that had the front sight pop loose. While trying to reseat it, I didn't tap it all the way down (it's a friction fit with two small pins that come in from either side). This resulted in shooting low just as you describe.

Check the front sight to make sure it is fitted correctly.

Gun was new when I bought it. The front sight is fully seated. I have just a half-turn or so left holding the rear sight adj screw in. I have had the barrel off and it seems to be true. I haven't had anyone else shhot it (*smacks head*--why didn't I think of that?). I should try more ammo as well. I just read a .22 thread in the rifle forum and did not realize that .22s could be sooo finickey. Thanks everyone for the suggestions.
