Winchester 473

A friend gave me a pound of this powder the other day but I have been unable to locate load data for it. I'm sure this was primarily used for shotgun applications but I was wondering if it is also suitable for hand gun loads. Can anyone help?

Wish I could help. All I've been able to find is a burning rate chart that puts 473 just ahead of Herco.

I don't think that's enough to go on though. I've got a 1/4 lb or so that someone gave me. Not really enough to mess with to begin with so I'll probably end up putting a match to it.

Instead of a "Threadkiller" I think you're a "Threadsaver" on this one. That info you have seems about right. Somehow I was thinking this was a replacement for 540 (which does have some handgun applications). Guess I could load a few .38 spcls to shoot in my 27 Smith and see what the chrony says but would prefer a documented starting place.

Yeah, this stuff is "faster" than 540. You're right, don't use 540 data with this stuff.

Win 473 was replaced by Super Field.

I came into most of a keg of Win 452AA and Phil Hodgdon told me that they had sold it under the Trap 100 label and provided load data. Maybe they sold 473 as something else under their label. (HS6 is 540 and HS7 is 571.)

I tried some AA Plus powder and did not like it for 12 gauge. I shot up the rest by working up a .38 Special load to standard velocity FOR USE IN .357 MAGNUM GUNS ONLY. I'm not telling you to do that with the 473, of course.

If you can hold 'till MOnday, I can get a copy of Phil Sharpe's "Modern Guide to Handloading." It *might* have some info. What caliber(s)?

Use WSF data. Start with min load for that powder and monitor pressure.

If you have any 452AA remaining, use WST data.

Thanks for the responses. From what I've been able to see on burn rate charts it's probably close to Unique. Hodgon said this is one they didn't make for Winchester. I'll start low in .38 splc and fire it in my 27 S&W over the chrony to see how it works (4 grains with a 158 bullets should be a good place to start).
