What's the optimum amount of 10 rnd mags needed for Highpower

Ok, you know I had to ask after my AR-15 mag question in the Rifle Country section.

I was figuring that 10 rnders would be best, but I couldn't pass up on getting a few 30 rnders, just to have. A buddy had them and traded for some ammo. Good trade.

So how many 10 rnders would be best to have for a match?

You need at least three so you can load mags of either five and five or two and eight ahead of time for the sitting and prone rapid stages. That leaves one to put in the rifle empty for the slowfire stages. I used to bring four or five mags, so if one quit working I'd have a spare.
I used a 20 or 30 round mag in the offhand stage and gripped it. That allowed me to get my elbow farther down on my side than holding the forend or a shorter mags. Thirtys might be proscribed by the rules now, it's been a while since I shot a match.

Ok, I'm about 99.99% sure you're planning on shooting Servcie Rifle. In that case, the mag must have the same dimensions as a 20 or 30 round USGI mag. Might as well use real USGI 20's because they're so good, as opposed to some company's abortion magazine. Not only that, but I won't support anyone cutting and welding our limited supply of 20 and 30 rounders to make 10 round Klinton mags.

Now to your question. I use 5 mags for match use, and I carry a spare for "just in case." I have two mags with a big "2" on them in white paint marker for the 2 round portion of the rapids, and another 2 with a big "8" on them. I load them the night before. Of course on an 80 shot match you'll have to reload your rapid mags once. Plenty of time for that. The last mag I use for standing and slow prone. The follower never even gets depressed, but you should have one that will always lock the bolt back for this job.

You may use 30's, but generally they're a PITA because they often get in the way for standing, and for sure they'll be in the way for sitting and prone. 20's are perfect for the job.

Jon (JC121) might be able to get you some good prices on 20's in you're interested.

No need to worry about me cutting up or welding high capacity mags. Niether do I have the capability to do such a thing or the inclination to have someone else do it.

While reading the Highpower "Service Rifle" rules, I must have missed that part about the mags. I guess I incorrectly assumed the 10s would be used as you load 2s, 5s or 8s for rounds shot with one mag.

If Jon happens to run across some 20 rnders at a good price, please have him let me know.

What I was getting at is that companies that sell 10s often take 20's and cut and weld them. That depletes the supply of 20's that is out there. I won't buy a 10 that's built like that becuase I don't want to support that action.

When the magazine is in the rifle its considered part of the rifle and therefore must appear as issued in Service Rifle.
