WA Students for Concealed Carry - We need leaders.

Hey everyone,

The Washington State segment of Students for Concealed Carry is looking for volunteers to organize groups on campus across the state. We appreciate any and all support, non-student volunteers are always welcome to attend events and help raise awareness (we will also need folks to help get petitions signed). If you are a student interested in leading the fight for concealed carry on your campus, or would like to be added to the list of volunteers, please contact me at: wastudentsforconcealedcarry@gmail.com

We are a non-partisan group that has no official stance on any other political issue. Our only goal is to pass legislation that legalizes the concealed-carry of firearms on campuses in Washington State. To learn more about our organization, please check out our website: concealedcampus.org

Of course, what is a politcal group without a facebook page? If you are on social media, definitely check out our page and share it with your friends!

Thanks! It can be tough sometimes, but things are looking much better now that Idaho has done the deed.

If you aren't local to WA, definitely reach out to your local SCC group if you'd like to help! (contact info is on the national websites under "states")

I sent numerous emails, no less than 6, to the contacts listed on thier webpage, trying to get something started for Bates in Tacoma. That was at least 6 months ago. No response from anyone.

J1MBOB, sorry to hear that! There were more than a few issues with the old contact information. However, the website has been recently updated with new emails and the region is under new leadership.

Many of our previous campus-leaders failed to appoint successors once they left their schools, or did not notify the organization that they were leaving. Because of this, their defunct email addresses stayed on the website.

I am the new state director for WA, and things are slowly picking up speed. If you are still interested in leading a group on your campus, email me at: wastudentsforconcealedcarry@gmail.com

Alternatively, you can PM me here on THR

Edit: Just noticed that your last post was your first at THR - welcome! This is a great forum for pretty much anything gun-related.

Correct me if I am wrong, it has been quite a while since I looked in to this, but I believe carry on WA campuses is legal by state law. However local campus Board of Directors sometimes pass Washington Administrative Codes, WACs, for their own campus that prohibit carry. Right?

While I know WA state law allows college officials to form WACs for their campuses, I do not see where an unelected college board derives legal authority to preempt the WA state preemption statute on carry, which was duly legislated. I discussed this with a college president a few years ago and he said something to the effect that I may be right but I would need to bring a lawsuit against the school to try and change anything.

Welding Rod, you are correct. Universities enact WACs that typically forbid the carry of firearms by students. For example, the Washington State University WAC on Firearms and Dangerous weapons reads:
Quote:
No student may carry, possess, or use any firearm...on university property or in university-approved housing.
Our group aims to change the law so that schools lose the right to forbid carry and possession.

Are you sure they actually have the right to forbid carry and possession, which is contrary to the state RCW preemption law, in the first place? Do you know if this point ever been challenged?

Good thinking WeldingRod, I'm not sure if anyone has challenged their right to forbid carry. Looks like I have some research to do!

It would be interesting to have your state congressman request a readout on this from the attorney general. However AG Rob McKenna was recently superseded by a democrat, Bob Ferguson.... So I have a hunch how that would likely turn out, in spite of what any laws actually say. He already revoked carry reciprocity with Florida.
