About ten years ago I was an OTR truck driver. While parked at a truck stop in California (can't remember which town), I discovered there was a public library just a few blocks from the truck stop. I didn't have a laptop, and it had been several months since I checked my e-mail. So, I set out for the library on foot, and while walking through a residential neighborhood, I immediately noticed a sign that read something like "This is a gun-free neighborhood" with a picture of a pistol with a red line through it.
I had never seen such a sign before, and began to wonder what it really meant, and how such a thing could be enforced. Did it mean that none of the houses I walked past harbored absolutely no firearms? Or did it mean that no one was allowed to bring guns into the neighborhood?
Was this some sort of state or local law? A neighborhood covenant? Just some sort of feel-good political statement? What?
Unless gun ownership is banned by law, how can a "gun-free neighborhood" policy even be enforced?

It's possible there is a HOA that enforces it, in which case the homeowners could be contractually obligated not to own guns. More enforceable that way, at least against the homeowners. ;)

With out knowing exact details.... we're all just guessing.

But its a pretty safe bet its just a feel good sign put up by the neighborhood residents.

I've seen "This is a crime free neighborhood" signs before, too.

CA GFSZ are usually not marked, because PC 626.9 does not require it; any signage would be local whim.

Maybe we should all put those signs in our window? Sure would be a surprise for the criminals i mean who doesn't like a good surprise????

Did anybody here see the creative Youtube video about gun-free homes a few years ago?

A few people who appeared to be from either Madison WI or midtown Memphis were in Eric Holder's neighborhood, wherever that was near DC.

They rang many door bells and offered to put signs in front yards, each of which read "This home has no guns", or very similar words.

Nobody wanted the sign. The objective was not what people actually understood at the time, as those people with the signs were good actors/actresses.

AStone: that sign really made me laugh. Did it describe the actual policy of the neighbor, or as a joke?

Please notice that at the bottom of almost every "No Dumping" sign there is a pile of trash.

I have yet to see a sign reach out and enforce anything, or convince someone to obey a law that they would not have obeyed anyway.

I have gone to those "Gun Free Zones" several times now, but I could never find out who was handing them out. Maybe I got there too late. I keep having to pay for mine.
