I live in the central CA coast area near San Luis Obispo, having moved here from Southern CA a few years ago. I've recently started playing around with black powder - a Ruger old army and a Pieta 1851. None of my local shops stock any kind of black powder, and the biannual gun show only carries 777, which is what i've been using. Many of the posts on this forum sing the praise of real black powder so I'm anxious to try some. I travel up and down the coast from San Diego to San Francisco on various kinds of personal business. I'm interested in learning of shops where I can buy the real thing in coastal CA.

If you only want a small amount to try and are in the Auburn area go to Sierra Gun Supply at 2131 Grass Valley Highway. If you need a larger amount, on line is the way to go. You can check out muzzle loading clubs if there are any in your area.

If you locate any of the black powder clubs, there are usually guys willing to split up a case of black at cost. I've seen numerous times the guys just ordered a case, figured out how much a can it cost...and sold what they didn't need to the other members.
You might also check out any rendezvous near you, and there should be some. Often times traders or other shooters will be selling some. I was at a flea mkt. type of affair last weekend and one guy had 5 pounds of Swiss 3f for sale.

Powder Inc. sells in 5 Lb. lots. I believe it's illegal to possess more than 1 Lb. in kaliornia at a time.
It's a little more complicated than that. The wiki seems to be down but over in the transportation code there's something about not having more than 5 pounds in your car, and over in the health and safety code there's some poorly written language about not storing more than 1 pound. It's unclear if it's per person, per structure, per address...

I'm not sure what there is in San Luis Obispo. There's a couple of places in Los Angeles (I drop by Walker 47 when I'm in the area) and some places up north of you (Jamestown is the other place I go) but I don't know about the middle.

Another online option is grafs.com. They'll sell a single pound. The hazmat will kill you unless you reload, in which case you have an out which is that they'll combine with smokeless. So if you're picking up smokeless powder or primers you can combine real black and percussion caps with one hazmat.

It is my experience that Sierra Gun Supply in Auburn is the only retailer that handles black powder within a 60 my radius of Sacramento. I have been to most all the ones mentioned at biggamehunt and they do not carry black powder. Most retailers in CA do not handle black powder. You can call around in your travels but your best would be muzzle loader clubs or the internet (powder inc and graf and sons)

The bay area of Ca. makes things more complicated for black powder as they have a law against transporting it over a bridge, hence...no body can deliver from north of SF to south of SF or the reverse. You are required to have a black powder license to sell it there at retail, but are only allowed to have 5 lbs of it on your premises. You have to order a case of 25 lbs, but can only have 5 lbs. legally in a business.
These types of BS there are why most guys go together and buy a case to split without a local dealer in the middle.
