I hunted by myself this year, so I only saw what I carried. That said, I carried a Tikka Superlite in .270 for Mule deer season and part of cow elk season, and a Browning X-Bolt Stainless Stalker in .30-06 for bull season and part of cow season. I ate elk tag soup this year, but I did get this guy right at the end of opening day with the Tikka.

I hunt alone on private/posted land. Usually if hunting brush, a 20g slug gun(870), my 10.5" Super Blackhawk or my Savage 340a 30-30. If hunting fields or open woods the Ruger American 30-06 or Ruger American .243.

I used my Ruger American .270 win.. I was holding out for something big, so I didn't kill my couse deer until the last day and had to settle for a dink. I had my opportunity though, and missed a shot at a really, really big one.

My DIL used her brand new Tika Super Lite, also .270 win.. She wasn't picky, and killed the first one she glassed up.

Our 2 friends, one used his Rem. 700 .270 win., and the other buddy used a Rem. 710, also .270 win.. One killed his first day also, as he wasn't looking for anything big either. But our other buddy held out like I did, and he killed his on the last day, like I did. But he managed to get a pretty decent one, not a monster, but definitely not a dink like mine.

And my son, well he killed his during the January archery season, so he just came along to help guide the rest of us.

So no issues filling tags here, just a lot of deer hanging in camp, gutting and skinning, most of which my DIL was insistent to do. She even took all the deer to the meat cutter, who is a family friend, then wouldn't let him cut the meat. That girl is amazing.

Was at a camp this past weekend with 7 hunters.

7.62x39 Savage bolt action (mine)
Win 100 .308
Win 70 in .270
Savage 6.5 CM
Win 94 30-30
Browning .270 & .30-06

Funny part? Average deer weight = 100 lbs. on the scales, and the average shot distance = 100 yards. LOL.

This year a

Winchester 70 in 30-06. Probably mid 70s
A Rem 760 in .270
A rem 760 in 30-06
A browning 81 in .243
A Rem 700 in 300 RUM (the decapitator)
A Rem 700 in 7 mag
A CZ in .308

And, like the last poster, not a single deer taken that would not have fallen instantly with a 30-30. All were inside 120 yards.

Savage 99 - 308
Ruger Scout Rifle - 308
CZ 550 FS - 6.5 x 55

The phase of Venus and Mars were aligned - we all tagged out opening day.

Lots of .30-06 and .270, and occasionally .30-30 (particularly for younger shooters).

I myself have typically used .30-06 (though I'm trying 7mm-08 next season), as do two of my uncles. My dad and brother both use .270.

Only oddball is one uncle who hunts with a Remington 788 in 6mm Remington. He's used that gun for decades though with literally hundreds of deer down, so it's working well for him.

I too only got a Bambie , last day , I saw deer every day ,But no nice bucks like last year , and I just built this 25-06 so it was either Bambie or a tree rat :) got her at a nice trot at 50 yards , she dropped in 20 feet , her twin and mom waited for her for a good 3 min , seemed like an hour ,

Glad you got to at least fire your .25-06. It's one of the best rounds for deer. My last hunt I took an eight and a nine point white tail with my favorite Winchester 70 in the .25-06 caliber. It has dropped bucks in their tracks out to 282 yards.

Took a few this past year. Two does with a 30-06 Winchester Model 70 and one buck with a 12 gauge rifled slug from my Remington 11-87 sureshot.

My 30-06 recipe sends a 150 grain hornady interlock SP at 2600fps and has dropped every deer i've shot in their tracks. It's a light recoiling load that fits the average sized deer around these parts.

The rifled slugs have also done a good job, but i'm going to explore a rifled 12 gauge barrel and sabot slugs for next year since i hunt thick brush in NC. The one old doe i had to track two years back went almost 75 yards through the thick stuff before I found her. Ergo, I'm a big fan of the best blood trail I can get and the 12 gauge entry/exit seems to do well in that department.

With sabot slugs, I hope to be accurate and comfortabel out to 100 yards or so.

This year there were more younger hunters that years past. For the first time I saw several 300 Win Mags for hunting deer. For some reason the younger generation figured out deer have grown armor plated skin. This year I went with a 30-06 and 30-30. I went out with the 30-30 but didn't get to shoot it, I didn't see anything worth shooting unfortunately.

This thread has spanned a bunch of hunting seasons, cool. It's good to see how things change over the years.

when I started this thread a few years ago , I was wondering what odd ball calibers were still getting out and getting the job , and in another thread where a member was asking what gun to get , I kept seeing "get a 30-06 there is one in every deer camp" and I thought hummm they're is never a 30-06 in the groups by me ? so I started this , and after the first year I noticed no one had listed a 25-05 , I had a 25WSSM and a bunch of bullets that didn't work well in it , I figured the best way to use up them bullets, was to build a 25-06 :) one of my buddy's said it was to pretty to take out in the woods , lol got that doe with a 115gr Nosler and it groups right at 1moa

Deer Rifle

Back in the early 50's, in Michigan, I used like Savanahsdad, a Remington Model 141 in .35 caliber. My step-dad used a Savage Mod 99 in 250/3000.
I still have the .35...

Here's what I saw this year:
Ruger M77 - .270
Ruger M77 - .308
Ruger #1 - 300 Win Mag
Ruger M77 MKII - .243
Custom built on Rem 788 - .270
Win 70 (FN) - .270
TC Omega - .50 Cal

I hunted yesterday with my buddy on his land. He is back to using his winchester model 70 in .270 and I used my remington model 7 in 7-08. I normally use a custom 98 in 7x57 but the last couple of years i have used the 7-08.

Neither one of us saw a deer. I did have a gray striped cat run up on me before he realized I was there. He sure had a surprised look on his face. He wasn't having any luck hunting either from what I could see.

No deer were harmed in the making of this thread.
