I've been handling a few GSRs of late and this is the utility rifle I think I've been looking for. Short, light, handy, good sight system, and common chambering are the very thing for me. The muzzle break needs to go.
Yes it doesn't conform to Cooper's specs completely, but then he favored his .376 Steyr. Who on this forum has seen ammo for the Dragoon?

Late to the party, but I agree with you that it is a very versatile rifle. I have two of them; a 16" blue, and 18" stainless, both left hand. Accurate, handy and rugged.

I have them on the Ruger-supplied forward rail. The rings are a bit of a PITA to get set up compared to some other designs, but they're light and the setup allows you to use the ruger sights as backups with no changes. I recommend the Leupold scope over the other scout eye relief options from Burris and various other manufacturers.

I was soooo close to getting the Leupold 2.5x28 and was even participating in an auction for one. Then I let the auction go on without me since I realized I need an eyepiece with adjustable reticle focus. That Leupold doesn't offer that feature and since my vision isn't the best, I had to pass.
As an edit to my post #3, I have now returned my GSR to a "scouting" configuration with a Burris 2x20 handgun scope in Burris Low Zee Rings.

My son has the GSR. I got to shoot it. Couple things I noticed, and one thing I would like to see. It was a sweet rifle. It is pretty heavy though. The rear sight base came loose after a few shots, and elevation adjustments were pretty coarse, and a "set it and forget it" sort of arrangement.
I wish they would put a readily adjustable rear sight on it.
I also wish it were in 243 or even a 6.5 Creedmoor. It was a nice rifle for sure.

I agree the rear sight is basically not acceptable. People have gotten got New England Gun Company and XS sights on to them, but none of the options are great IMO. What we really need, and will hopefully get eventually, is Tech Sights.
The newer models with the synthetic stock (#6830 I think) are a pound or more lighter than the wood stock ones.

The set screws in my rear sight came loose, too. LocTite cured that, but yeah it is a set it and forget it type of sight. I tried a Marbles #30 sight (with quick elevation adjust) out on the barrel when I used a scope on the receiver, but that sight couldn't handle .308 recoil whatsoever.
Regarding the weight of the laminate stock, I have fully come to appreciate the extra bit of recoil reducing weight my GSR has without me having to install a muzzle brake.
Now, if the synthetic stocked stainless GSR would have come out before I bought my heavier GSR, I would have bought it. And, I'd be singing a different tune.

I have an original Steyr Scout. I've killed deer and antelope with it scoped in it's original 2.5 Leupold ER scout scope. I killed a pronghorn buck with it at 350+ yards. I've killed several deer at over 300 yards with it. I smack steel with it at 600 yards on a regular basis. I've also killed a double truck load of feral hogs at all ranges and situations. It is truly a snap shooting dream.
Where the scout scope falls down is when the sun is back lighting your scope. Sunlight at just the right angle from behind absolutely kills a scout scope. The other place a scout scope falls right on it's butt is when you are trying to pick out that buck, back in the brush in dawn or dusk lighting conditions. A 2.5 power scout scope simply does not have the magnification to allow you to define a flat colored object in the brush in lower lighting conditions. I have partially fixed that problem by replacing the original 2.5 LER scope with a new variable 1X4 power LER scope. That helps with the issue of seeing stuff better but it does not help with the back lighting issue.
There are some people who's brains simply do not allow them to see through a scout scope. I've met several over the years. I don't know what it is that causes it but they can not make their brain see a sight picture through a scout scope.
For a general purpose all carry scout rifle the concept of using a forward mounted low power scope is legitimate. For a rifle used for hunting I think a 1.75x6 or 2.5x8 in a conventional mount is probably the way to go. It is slightly slower in target acquisition and not as usable on fast moving targets but it will serve the hunter better in most average hunting conditions.

H&H pretty much nailed the scout rifle concept, in my eyes. No setup is ideal for every situation, but I enjoy the scout rifle idea, for what it is. I think it covers a lot of ground where rifles are used, but lacks in certain applications.

That looks to be a very nice scope. With an eye relief of 6 to 7 inches, that has to cut down on the angle of light that sneaks in behind the head better than a scope with 9 or so inches of eye relief. I would guess.

The Steyr is wicked accurate and shoots and points like a dream. The back up sights are complete joke and totally unusable in my estimation.
