Andrew Jackson was a shooter. In addition to military success in campaigns against Indian tribes and the Spanish, he was the Hero of New Orleans defeating the British in the War of 1812, albeit weeks after the Peace Treaty had been signed. He was in at least three duels and bore the ball from one such wound to his deathbed. He was a populist, slave owner, and founder of the Democratic Party.

This is an alleged copy of one of a set of dueling pistols made for Jackson in the later 1820s by Philip Creamer:

Harriet Tubman was a shooter. She was an escaped slave. She undertook numerous missions to convey slaves to Canada along the underground railroad to Canada, armed with a pistol and saber. During the Late Unpleasantness Between the States, she acted as an armed scout for Union forces and participated in the Combahee River Raid. She was a Republican.

Her pistol and sword:

Anyone able to ID the pistol?

Later in life, armed with what appears to be one of the RCMP issue Winchester 1873 musketoon's in 40-60 ? Were these rifles only made for the RCMP ? If so, isn't it interesting that she had one?

I am perfectly happy to have a gun-toting Republican replace the founder of the Democratic Party on the $20 bill and was interested in the $20 bill's gun related history.

I thought the same thing. Should be a flintlock. If you are going to put Tubman on the 20. That would have been a great photo of her and her rifle.

agreed- that should be the picture of her they use

It is of English origin.

A moderately priced "horse" pistol, converted from a flintlock most likely made in Birmingham in one of the hundreds of gun companies that flourished there in the late 18th and early 19th Centuries. It should have a mate and a box. Chances are she got it third or fourth hand....

Her saber seems the be a US Infantry Officer's saber from around 1820 to 1840.

Thanks for a good bit of historical fact finding and for keeping it firearms related.

Andrew Jackson was not all good guy and hero. He sponsored and supported the Indian Relocation act which forcibly removed and relocated Native Americans to reservations far afield from their ancestral lands. They had to march there on foot, and thousands of them died. It was called Trail of Tears by the Indians.

Then he appointed his Attorney General, Roger B Taney to the post of Chief Justice of SCOTUS, where he then influenced the court that rendered the Dred Scott decision; whereupon he wrote the majority opinion that attempted to incorporate slavery into the constitution. Jackson supported this.

Sorry this little history lesson isn't gun related but it is relevant to the conversation. I will be looking forward to the new 20s

It's also ironic as all hell that Jackson ended up on printed currency in the first place (he was the original opponent of the printed 'green back'). I honestly bet he'd take bigger exception to that than being replaced by a runaway slave, or a woman. And ultimately it's a confused jumbled mess of historical nonsense that Jackson will still be present, but on the reverse side of the bill.

This is what happens when people who don't read history try to 'honor' it . All we need now is Woodrow Wilson, FD Roosevelt, and MacArthur and we'll have most of our controversial figures all in one place

I say leave the money alone . We have the ones we have now Because they would be near impossible to counterfeit. That what we were told No need to replace Important men in history with little know people just to be PC and make a few people happy.

In addition to the caplock pistol, there are period illustrations of Harriet Tubman carrying caplock carbine, muzzleloading military rifle, and there are accounts of her having a "revolver".

It will be great when you go to the bank and the teller asks how you would like your cash back. I'll say "all tubbies please" :D
