Any recommendations on a gun vise for < $100? This will be used for cleaning, scope mounting/adjusting, and very light gunsmithing (e.g spring replacements, etc). I want to get something that's decent at the lower-end pricing. I looked at the MTM and Tipton offerings as well as the Lyman Revolution.

It also works well to site in your gun if use like the directions. Some reviews have people using like it is a lead sled and giving it bad reviews because they say it is not stout enough or heavy enough. It is not ment to be used that way. It does work very well as a vise. It is all metal construction.

I have a Tipton for basic maintenance as well as a MTM range box with blocks. Both work fine, but I'll admit that I usually just use the bench.

I use the Lyman Revolution for cleaning. I have two others, both home made, that worked well but that are used for storing cleaning equipment since I got the Lyman. It would work for mounting scopes but I wouldn't want to use it for anything where I was applying any pressure to whatever I was working on. An example of this would be drifting a sight in or out of a dovetail.
I found that I want something very rigid when working on rifles or pistols. I have a clone of the Shop Fox vise mounted on one end of the bench. I made some inserts for the jaws that are wood with leather on one side. This way I have a choice between metal jaws, wood jaws, and leather jaws depending on what I need.

How about one for free??
I made this one years ago out of scrap lumber.
Clamp it to the bench with a wood clamp when I want to use it.
Front upright has V notch for barrel.
Rear upright has U notch for stock.
Both lined with suede leather so no scratching going on.

I'm with you. What ever happened to our pioneering spirit. Seems like everyone would rather buy something inferior to what they can build for darn near nothing.

I have been contemplating building one myself. The problem is that I don't have the woodworking tools to make a nice U shape for the back rest or to cut the pieces for a clamp. I also just finished building a huge treehouse and swingset for the kids here at the new house and I'm kinda tired of wood at the moment.

Take the $100 you were going to spend, and spend $19.95 on a cheap jig saw.
You can cut the whole thing out of scrap lumber and still have $80 and a new power tool left over.

Actually, I probably don't even need that. After thinking about it, I think I have a circular hole saw bit that I can probably use that would make one large enough. And making it would let me mount it on my bench using the mounting system I put on it...

So I ended up knocking out a very simple vise (sans clamp) in between tasks working on some shelving for my wife. Guess my break from woodworking was only about 5 days....
I used some scrap 2x10s from the kids' tree house. My wife happened to be at a crafting store and found me a strip of leather for $5. New bottle of contact cement set me back $5 so I'm "out the door" at $10.

I wound suggest clamping it down to the beach with a wood clamp though.
Too easy to bump it and knock it & the gun off the bench otherwise..

In a previous house I drilled a hole in the workbench and installed a T-Nut from the bottom. Then had a nice long bolt with big washer that I used to secure things like this when using them on the bench. Worked better than a C-Clamp as there was no excess tool sticking out anywhere and the result was the same.

I took off the elevation screw adjustments.
I built an under structure.
I added a 3rd and 4th "floor joist".
I clamp it down with clamps or in a woodworking bench vise.
If I put a rifle in it and shake it with 100 pounds of force it only moves 1/4".
This is a big deal for cleaning with brushes that still interfere with the groove diameter.
I know it is more that $100.
Invest $2M in Amazon and wait a decade. That should get the wife off your back.
