I see if often stated that it's lax gun laws in the neighboring states around Chicago IL that allow so many gun crimes in Chicago. Do the criminals in Chicago simply have to drive across State lines to get firearms?

The point that I really want to choke the snot out of some folks comes when they state this like it excuses a murder.

Not legally. The buyer cannot take direct possession of the firearm. All firearm transfers across state lines must go through a FFL in the buyers home state which means all regulations of the buyers home state must be followed including a background check.

In case I change it later, I'll box-quote my current sig line here.

If guns are too readily-accessible in my state for the safety of yours, why doesn't my state have your state's crime issues? It's your people, people. Fix them instead of attacking ours.

Chicago is at or near the bottom nationally in enforcing gun laws. This has more to do with their problems than the gun laws of neighboring states. Lock up the criminals committing the crimes and you accomplish 2 things. First, those criminals are no longer a threat, as long as they stay in jail. Second, you send a message to people contemplating committing crimes with guns, that their actions will have severe consequences.

Only 60 homicides over the July 4th weekend in Detroit alone, imagine how many more it would've been if they didn't have those strict gun laws.

Obviously their tight gun restrictions are working....

Chicago politicians have to blame somebody other then themselves, so they point at neighboring states, mostly Indiana. But BATF&E gun traces have shown that this isn't so. To the degree that guns used in crimes in the Windy City can be traced (and many can't for whatever reason) most originated in Illinois.

Many of which are most likely the plunder of residential and commercial burglaries...

Gary, Indiana, east of Chicago is almost a suburb. Some of the guns are legally purchased by family members living in Indiana who pass a background check then funnel them back to relatives in Chicago. It's a fairly easy way to skirt Illinois FOID law.

Easy for gang members to get guns, they send family members or girl friends to purchase ammo and guns because they have no criminal record.

Gang members get many guns through "legal" straw-purchases using someone without a criminal background to buy for them in suburban or rural Illinois. Criminal Gangs also have a "pipeline" to acquire guns from the black market which includes Mexico, South America, Asia, and the Mid-East. Add this to the fact the ATF does not prosecute straw-buyers when they have all the evidence, and virtually no "stolen guns" reported to the AFT or FBI are ever actually recovered. (Wonder where they end up?) Crooked Cops, crooked politicians, lax prosecution, and Holly-weird hip-hop culture, make for a toxic mixture. Chicago needs Rudy Giuliani, stop and frisk, and project exile.

I agree but it would probably cost the city of Chicago lots more money to keep criminals in jail than deal with the shootings and cry about the lack gun laws in neighboring communities, states, and the Federal government.

I would not be surprised if these jail costs would have a marked affect on city governmental officials' supplemental income.

If Chicago's violent gun crime rate is due to lax gun laws in Montpellier, VT, then why isn't the gun crime rate there also very high?

Under US prohibition of alcohol, most of Chicago's illegal alcohol was smuggled from Canada or from moonshiners in the US South (and moonshining was illegal before prohibition).

Just exactly how does the prohibition of legal X impact bad behavior by bad people, beyond bolstering black markets?

Carl, it is just showing that it is a fallacy to think that a "law", "ban", or "prohibition" can be used to prevent a specific action by somebody who is intent on doing just that.
People with evil intent are never stopped by "laws".

So true. But that point is repressed. It’s Congress’ job to make laws not to enforce them. They seek opportunities to create new gun laws to bolster their appeal to their party/constituents. Doing the right thing always takes a back seat to getting reelected.

ILLinois is also notorious for NOT prosecuting the straw sellers too while preferring to go after and close the gun shop which may haVE UNKNOWINGLY MADE THE TRANSACTION.

Il has had some of the toughest gun laws since the eighties. Laurie Dan made the background checks come alive. So, you have a three day wait along with background checks and still Chicago is more violent than Iraq. I just recently heard the the reason gangs have guns is due to strw buyers, well that's a crime and just like the lack of prosecutions for gang bangers the same holds true for straw buyers. It comes down to liberals in control, period. Chicago has been in control by lies for a loooong time and yet it seems that the media and politicians fail to mention that.

I grew up in and around Chicago in the 50's and 60's. My father had his office in the Austin area on the west side. Could run around alone as a preteen kid with out worry. Fast forward to now, that calm mixed area is a crime ridden shooting gallery. Many good folks live there in fear of being gun downed daily. What changed, the neighborhoods became a dumping grounds for for poverty and ignorance. It's easy to call for gun control when other remedies are much harder to implement.
You allow the least of us to be hearded into areas like cattle and allow social order to deteriorate and this is what you get. No easy answer, cry gun contro, at least the firefights will stop. It makes for a great headline.

This bulldink gets repeated over and over despite the fact it is largely untrue and unfounded. And if an IND resident acquires firearms intending to transfer then to gang bangers and others unable to acquire them they have already broken the law when they do so.

As mentioned, there is zero enforcement of straw purchasers in Chicago. Since the gang-bangers have records they can't get gun without straw purchases.

The Left bellows about how easy it is to get guns outside of Chicago yet they do nothing to enforce existing laws. So what else is new?

Can't do that, because then the lib's start screaming bloody murder about the disproportionate number of minorities that are in jail. You've heard it, "If they make up 13% of the population, they should have a corresponding 13% incarceration rate..."

Sadly, you can't expect this issue to be dealt with in a logical and reasonable fashion. So, to heck with jail... a good ol dose of capital punishment is what is needed. Give them a year max to file appeals, and poke em with a needle. Even if it doesn't have a great deterrence effect, as some claim, the recidivism rate is about 0%.....

Heck drop em off a tall platform on a short rope.
Lethal injection is becoming impossible to perform since drug companies now refuse to supply the required chemicals because they consider the practice cruel and unusual punishment.

I consider shooting a little kid who was just playing football pretty cruel and unusual.
