Hello all,

So recently I've begun to get back into shooting shotguns. One of the reasons that I originally fell out of touch with the shotgun community, was the cost of ammunition. If I wanted to shoot at my local range, I had to shoot buckshot or slugs(birdshot was only allowed at the clay shooting area). So naturally my HD shotgun at the time rarely got fed, because at a dollar a round, buckshot wasn't high on my list of cost effective training loads.

Fast forward to a few weeks ago, as I mulled over the same issue, I came across this Gem at a local Walmart.

distributed by tula ammo, we have Suprema 12 gauge 00 buckshot.

At just about 12 dollars a box of 25 rounds, this seemed to be the best way for me to practice with my HD shotgun at realistic ranges (7,10,and 15yds) at my local range.

So I bought a few boxes, and took them home to test them out. Upon inspection, the round looks pretty average. It's got a red plastic shell, with a low brass wall. The Crimp is pretty consistent, as far as I've seen. The brass Is marked with four "12's" and four stars, which I've seen on quite a bit of Rio ammo(manufactured by Maxam). Which makes me think that it's a contract ammo that is not directly made by tula ammo.

This picture is showing the shell, brass, and headstamp

This picture shows the headstamp similarity to Rio made by Maxam and the Suprema ammo.

After inspecting the ammo, I made my way to the range.

Now this is where the rubber hits the road, at roughly 50 cents per round, I wasn't expecting a whole lot from this load. Boy was I wrong, after patterning this round(I'll show a few pics in a moment) I would say that within 15 yards; the absolute maximum I would consider likely inside a home environment, I would have no issue using Suprema buckshot in my HD shotgun. Also worth noting, judging by the recoil of this load, I would say it's full power. I'd bet that if It was run over a chrono you'll find Suprema 00 to clock somewhere around 1350 FPS.

5 yd pattern 1 shot at target(please note, in these patterning shots, I've was trying to work my way back into using the shotgun so the POA is off because of me)

10 yd pattern, 2 shots at target (Edit: I may re-shoot this target to better represent what this load is capable of doing)

10 yd target, 10 shots. this picture was taken on 08/01/2016, and I've gotten back into the groove with my shotgun(mossberg mav 88). as you can see, the shot is centered and a tad high. my gun seems to like to pattern high in the first place, YMMV.

Summary: Would I call this the best Buckshot to ever have touched my hands, no. Though to be fair, at 12 dollars a box of 25 from wally world, I would say that this is a pretty good budget ammo and would not hesitate to use it to defend myself or my family. So far I've put 100 rounds down range, and I like the stuff.

If anyone has any questions, comments, or concerns, let me know.

Edit:

I decided to disassemble a shell to show what the internals look like.

as you can see, there is a wad, but not an actual shot cup between the shot and powder and there is no buffer to speak of.

Does that have a plastic wad containing the buckshot? If not, look for lead streaks in your barrel. Won't hurt performance one bit, but cleaning every so often will be a chore.

We found that Suprema buckshot last year. Tried it in a H&R Pardner pump 18", Mossberg 500 18" and a Wingmaster w/smooth 20" deer barrel. Functioned and patterned great winter or summer. Very consistent patterns. I don't recall any leading in any of the guns. Definitely full power. Good stuff! I pick a box up occasionally to add to the stash. Probably have 30 or so boxes for the hoards.

It does have a wad containing the buckshot, unfortunately while I did have a picture of a shot wad, I ended up picking the wrong wad up from the ground. If you look at the 10 yard silhouette target you'll see the telltale areas where the wad collided with the target.

As for my stash, I've got about 6 boxes so far. Luckily it looks like no one has really discovered this round around my area yet, so I should have no issue stocking up.

I would suggest purchasing some pure copper Chore Boy pot scrubbers, cutting the ends off with scissors, and wrapping a 3" x 3" square of it around a worn 12 Gauge bore brush.

That is what I had to use to remove the very heavy lead fouling from my shotgun barrel after shooting a box of that stuff.

Good price, will work for self defense, but easily the dirtiest buckshot I have ever shot. The Suprema 00 Buckshot round I disassembled had soft lead pellets, no shot cup, and no buffer.

Just my .02,
LeonCarr

Yep, its the best price for 00 bck right now at local Walmart. But for real self defense work get the Winchester they have with 15 shells for $12. The Suprema is only good for practice. I did order Estate 00 bck from Midway , they have sale price on those like $80 for a hundred plus shells.

After patterning about 15 different loads for my Maverick, I'm quite partial to Rio Royal buck, and I do have quite a bit of it as well. Though I wouldn't have any issue recommending it to a friend new to shooting who doesn't want to pay a ton for ammunition, you often cannot find Rio royal buck at any brick and mortar stores.

Actually both Winchester and Remington 00 buck patterned about the same as the Suprema you see here, but YMMV.

Thanks for your review and well done.

I did not see this stuff last week at my Wal-Mart.....but it is moving half a mile to a new building this month and al the areas are messed up.

At that price it should be hard to not at least give it a try.

From your patterns it looks like this is MUCH more like old style buckshot before every one insisted on "Flight Control Wads" and such to make for smaller patterns and longer useful range.

For HD I would much prefer a 7 inch wide pattern at 7 yards than a single hole as the shot is still in the wad. Of course for hunting or military/police work I would really like the super tight patterns.....but that means you give up what made the shotgun so attractive to many for HD work.

One of the attractive things about the shotgun is the ease of choosing to use the ammo appropriate to the job at hand. This stuff looks like something that gives us yet another choice.

From the manual/range rules:
"Birdshot may not be used repeatedly on any range but the shotgun/trap range"

"Do not pattern shotguns on club backers, please bring your own backers"

"Buckshot may be used on the 25 yard range if members supply their own backers"

This leads me to assume that they allow birdshot to be patterned a limited amount on these ranges but they don't allow you to shoot it a lot. probably has to due with the target stands they have. They are wooden and relatively small and at short to medium distances, they could get torn up by errant shots. That's how I've interpreted it at least.

Some folks that do mowing dislike the plastic wads and shot columns from shot guns.

Ranges that use wooden target stands suffer enough damage from single projectile shooting guns.

Some folks believe there is greater danger of splash from shotguns.

Plenty of reasons for ranges not to like shotguns.

During a shotgun class I once took we formed a line and picked up the plastic remains between the various shooting positions and the targets as well as the hulls on the shooting line as part of the deal to use the range. It was a pain in the lower back and hamstrings for certain!

It took me awhile to get back out to my range, but I do have the updated pattern photos.

10yd target: This was a really nice tight pattern, i'm surprised it didn't open up more.

please note that all of these targets use 1 inch square grid

Yep, this was patterned from my 18.5 inch barreled maverick 88 security shotgun. I do have maverick 88 with a 28 inch field barrel as well.

If anyone is interested in it, I could probably pattern the buckshot at a longer distance with that gun.

Sure, if it's not any trouble, I wouldn't mind seeing a pattern from 20yds, and maybe even out to 25 yards (I've been researching ammo and doing some pattern testing on a little 20g coach gun lately, so this has been an interest lately).

An excuse to go to the range is never a bad thing! Kind of like an excuse to buy a new gun. ;)

Anyhow all things considered, I'll see about getting some pictures this week.

I only have a modified and a no brand IC choke for my field gun, so I'll post pics for both chokes at their respective ranges.

Also If anyone has any trouble seeing the pictures, I have them in an album on my facebook page.

Well I was able to get out to shoot yesterday, but I only had time to pattern with the modified choke. SO here are the pictures from that trip.

I figured I'd start at the 15 yard point, to kind of see what this does, versus my other maverick 88. I was rather disappointed, seeing this pattern open up just as much with the modified choke. I have had issues with the stock choke, and I will be receiving a set of Trulock chokes in the mail within the next week. Once I get the set, I'll post pics from those chokes(IC,MOD,FULL).

As you can tell, my aim was a tad off, but at 20 Yards the pattern continues to gradually open up.

14088452_1078597488903521_2740980235256178652_n.jpg

At 25 yards, the pattern is pretty wide.

14202699_1078597565570180_1377489679964260892_n.jpg

25 yards with 3 shots on the paper.

Well... I really wasn't impressed by these results, but at I said, I'll be getting better chokes in the mail soon, and I'll be able to pattern them as well.

IME, those are about normal, if not tighter than average, considering the Modified choke and ammo that doesn't include flite-control wads.

Yeah, those 'groups' seem about what I'd expect from my own testing. Much more than 20yards, time for the flight control. Most of the time, 25 yards I can get all of the pellets in a silhouette, usually a couple of fliers. The Flite Control gets me out another 10-15 yards. Then it's slug time, (or the AR).

Terminology changed, thanks for pointing that out.

And as for the size of the pattern, thank you for the information. I'm still learning what chokes are capable of realistically doing( this maverick 88 with the field barrel is the first gun I've owned with a screw in choke system).

In that case, while I'll still post the trulock choke patterns, I may choose to leave the MOD pattern out if it mirrors this result.

The Federal Flight Control OO Buckshot loads do keep very tight patterns at around 10 yards or so. At that range they may hit a small area on the outside of the target but I doubt they will generally travel through the target in a straight line like a shotgun slug.
