Emotional Rollercoaster - Picking up my SiCo Sparrow

Finally got word that my Sparrow was ready for pickup (excited).

Forms mailed 2/1, card charged 4/1, approved 7/22, received 8/11 (happy).

Attempted to attached to the MK III I picked up at a gun show recently, but no joy on the threads (confused).

Pulled out my thread gagues and found out whoever threaded the pistol used 1/2-20 threads... some manufacturers use/used this thread for .22's (angry).

Staring at my shiny new silencer that won't thread onto my pistol (sad).

Pistol was a good deal at $330 for a threaded MK III... but I should have known from the abortive modification to the front sight that something was wrong.

So, anyone know a good place to send off an MK III for a cut, thread, sight re-locate?
 
Man, that is a bummer!

Since the upper is the serial #'ed part on the Ruger it makes it more of a pain.
You may well be better off to sell it and buy a factory threaded gun these days.

Depending where it goes I would expect $150 for the barrel cut, threading, and sight drill/tap relocation. With shipping the #'ed part costing more you could end up with $150 to $200.

I would let it go and buy new.
 
Yeah, I'm seeing take-off 22/45 lite uppers for $150-ish on gun broker. I like the MK style trigger frames better than the 22/45, so I was excited to find this one already threaded.

Maybe I ought to just pick up one of those uppers and save this one for a day when I have access to a lathe and can cut the threads myself.

I've got three problems with that plan:

1) Elevated concerns about threads being concentric due to improper pitch being used in the first place.

2) Adapters run about $20 for no-name (unknown machining quality) eBay parts and $45 for the SiCo part. $45 for the right part gets me 1/3 the way to a new upper, or maybe 1/2-1/3 way to re-threading the barrel and doing it right.

3) This is the main reason... My OCD just won't let me have a section of smaller diameter adapter between the barrel and can. Ugh, 1" reciever to .8"-ish barrel to .75" ish adapter to 1" ish can. Nope... that dog don't hunt.
 
TROS can build whatever you want and make the adapter the same size as the barrel.

They aren't just $25 though.
 
Just a thought but maybe sell that one and buy a new one? I mean, I would label it as having the thread pattern that it does, not saying try to pass the buck, but I bet there are buyers for it as is.

1. Buying a high precision drill rod from McMaster Carr to check concentricity would take care of that concern. It's not just thread concentricity, thread angle and muzzle face or shoulder squareness are even bigger concerns. I've had to send Satern barrel back to remove a small fillet at the base of the threads (they were great about it and I recommend them their customer service).

2. This hobby is not cheap. Here is a great choice and made by SilencerCo itself: http://www.silencershop.com/1-2x20-to-1-2x28-adapter.html It also adds a o-ring gas seal and an included thread protector.

3. OCD sucks. If you insist buy a more modern Ruger. Unfortunately the upper is the Title I item with the Ruger. Keep in mind most .22 rifle folks need an adapter or spacer anyway since rifle thread are usually too long for the Sparrow.

Your approval gives me hope. I have a Trust Form 4 with Forms Sent 2/10 and Check Cashed 2/16.

After getting several quotes for re-threading the receiver/barrel I have ranging form $85 to $150, I decided to just go ahead and pick up a take-off 22/45 lite receiver from GunBroker. Looks like that'll only cost me $145 after shipping, be lighter, and provide a project later on when I get my hands on a lathe to cut and re-thread the one I have.

Thanks for the input everyone...

Now to order that spacer for my dedicated .22 AR upper...

No kidding! Last thing I want to do is save a few pennies on the threads just to have a baffle strike on the can!

Everything I'm seeing for approvals indicates that Form 4 / Form 1 approvals have hit a brick wall right at the 2/10 timeframe. I was worried that the 4/1 credit card payment was going to set me back, but it seems like the sent/received date is more important.

I have a Trust Form 4 sent 6/6 and check cashed 2/16. To quote the wait time predict on NFATracker:"Based on the last 6 months of data in NFATracker 94.30% of people have received their stamp by now." As you might have guessed, I'm part of the 5.7% who haven't.

The wait time has been sharply rising so the last 6 months of data is not a good predictor.

My dealer told me he received three stamps on Saturday. The other two were 3 months, and 9 weeks.

9 weeks! That guy should buy lottery tickets.

i had him turn down the barrel warning writing, cut the barrel to 4.5", thread, make a thread protector that matches barrel OD, and set back the front sight.


great work, quick turnaround. very pleased with the end product.
 
Is that the speed strip kit from Majestic Arms I see there?

If so, how do you like it? Did you actually have to use their hammer?
