Virtually every LEO in America carries with one in the pipe. But what about the members of this forum?

I've often wondered about this. However, even with all the polls I used to do, I can't recall running one on this important decision. We'll keep it succinct.

All comments and votes are appreciated.

Doesn't do me much good if it is not there. I've had plenty of people tell me that they can rack the slide fast enough but I have never seen it done by the average person before I get a shot off, or two. We've actually done this during training at work. Carry how you see fit, but I carry ready to fight.

Even before my present job I carried my 1911 with one in the chamber, hammer back, safety on.

This was discussed on another board I read.
Split about even.
I bought a new carry gun and I carried it with no round in the chamber.
Went to the range a few times and gained confidence in the gun and myself and started to carry it loaded, cocked, and locked.
Took awhile before I was comfortable with that.
It's a Sig P938 which is basically a mini 1911 in 9mm.

What if you only have one hand available ?
Yeah I know you can rack the slide on your pants pocket lip, or a car door jam.
Will you think of that when you have a split second to get into action ?
To me if it's unloaded it's just a hammer.

EDC round in the chamber.

Nightstand pistol loaded but no round in the chamber.

Logic is that between perimeter security and dog I will have plenty of time to rack the slide should the need arise. Technically a "night stand" gun is off your person so I treat that differently than a carry piece.

You'd be amazed at the rationale used by the empty chamber practitioners. I remember this discussion some years ago and I was shocked by how delusional some were on getting their gun in the fight if needed.

Yep.
If you are not comfortable with a round in the pipe you need to train more.

One day at the range we had some automated targets that would present for two seconds or so, then go away. We did several scenarios where we'd draw, chamber a round and shoot, just draw and shoot, different hands, etc. It was a lot of fun. It was also an eye opener. I encourage everybody to try some of those. I reckon more than a few of you who carry with an empty chamber will be surprised at how long it takes you to chamber a round with one hand and get a shot off.

If the pistol is in a holster, on my person, under my control, always. If the gun is not under my direct control, in the safe, nightstand, glove box etc. I do keep a loaded magazine in the gun with no round in the chamber.

On occasion there are times where I carry with no holster and utilize a clipdraw when no other method will work. I know it isn't as fast, but it is a heck of a lot faster than going back home to get the gun I couldn't carry otherwise. And I'm not going to carry this way with one in the chamber.

So I keep my gun right beside my pillow with no round in the chamber. What about folks who keep a round in the chamber but their gun in a safe?

Or do you just advocate everyone having their gun in their hand on their chest, cocked and unlocked whilst sleeping?

Yes, always.

When I was new to carrying a gun, a few years ago, I was really uncomfortable with it. Someone on this forum suggested that people in my situation carry with the slide racked, but no round in the tube. After X amount of time, we'll see that the trigger never pulls itself and therefore no round would have been fired for that entire time. Took me a couple weeks and I realized it was true / became comfortable with it. Carried with a round in the chamber ever since then.

My post had nothing to do with yours as I didn't see it till after I posted. My post was directed at those who believe they can draw and chamber a round against an armed threat.
There are to many variables to try to dissect with regards to off body gun condition.

Yeah .. This is always an entertaining topic .. Duane Thomas even published an article in the August Blue Press titled "Chamber Empty = Suicide"

I used to shoot IDPA condition 3 .. Guaranteed conversation starter .. :)

Try to chamber a round one handed....

a) while being assaulted.
b) while your hand is wet with sweat.
c) while you are running for your life.
d) while the bad guys a present and looking toward you.

Also, can you guarantee you won't short stroke the action and jam it?

If you are so worried about that chamber being loaded.. get a revolver.

But, sure if you wanna carry chamber empty, fine with me.

And when the gong sounds and you need that weapon fast, lots of luck!

Yep, whenever I strap on my .45, that very 1st round is always live. ;)
Might not be time to rack that slide, one in the pipe can save my hide! :D

Apologies to Hank Williams, Jr.
