.41 Mag Association

I had a S&W 57 and while I had it, it was my favorite wheelgun (and one of my favorite guns) and my favorite caliber. Due to ammo costs and the availability of both ammo and reloading components (and a few other, mostly financial, reasons) I sold it. I regretted it almost immediately (possibly before it even sold actually), and I've long thought about maybe buying another .41mag (probably another S&W, though maybe a Taurus or Ruger due to the cost of a new or used Smith). The one I had was from the first year of manufacture and still had its presentation box and accessories...I really should have held on to it, even if I didn't shoot it enough to justify keeping it.

skeet...I can see how the sight would then be a bigger concern for you than the hammer spur... I shoot DA revolvers DA most of the time so a missing hammer spur is no big deal to me and one less thing to catch on...

Shot some .41 on Thursday and Friday...Freedom Arms 6" 83 and a 4.25" 97. Rounds from the 83 (654) were the 300 grain Mountain Mold with 19.0 grains of H110...1260 fps...it is just hard to miss with that gun/load combination. Shot gallon milk jugs at 50 yards and steel targets down to 4" at 100...

The little 97 is just a joy.. It now runs a MeHic 180 grain FP at 1300 fps. Recoil is not objectionable and it is very accurate. Tried some of the Accurate Molds 41-250F with 22.0 grains of H110...1450 from a 5.5"...and although the first two shots were almost touching at 15 yards, my hand was telling me to quit while I was ahead...

Well The gun show has been a bust for S&Ws so far. I did buy a S&W 1917 45 ACP...Bown bbl though. I paid 75 bucks and was thinking on re-barreling it. It had 4 bullets stuck in the bbl. But a fellow came along who collects such stuff and a sold it. More than doubled my money. Started thinking about another project and said the heck with it. Have found a rough M-67 but waaayyyy too much $$. And a fellow had a presentation 66 from the LA?? police dept??? I think new unfired for a grand. Only guns I have picked up is a Manhurin PPK 22 and a Winchester 64 in 32 Win Special...but both nice guns...sigh...no 58s at all...Heck hardly any S&Ws at all. Oh I did get a new model Blackhawk convertible(357/9mm) in the box as new for 400 bucks. Like I need it. Even though the price was right...I only bought it cause it was a 4 5/8 inch gun... But I already have one that was given to me for my wife to carry in her truck. Well I have 60 bucks in it as it only had the 9mm cylinder. I found a new cylinder in 357 and fitted it to the gun. So the price was still right as they say.. Not even a Ruger 41 mag at this show!! Darn it..Maybe someone will walk in with one today Yeah right

Skeet, Missoula show at the fairgrounds? We almost drove over Saturday. That show isn't as good as the August show at the UM

It was definitely in shooter condition. Good condition, but it was definitely a shooter. So, I'd guess probably a good $1000-1500, though it is possible you are right because I see some later year 57s in lesser condition going for $1200+ with the box and accessories. Heck, while it is in better condition than mine was, there is a presentation box and accessories (no gun) on Gunbroker right now with a starting bid of $299.

If I get incredibly lucky and run into a used gun for a great price I'll do it, but more likely, if I get another (and not a Ruger or Taurus .41mag) it will probably be new production. It will probably be cheaper than a good used gun, and I can shoot it without worrying about what it is doing to its value (and I'll think less about what I let get away, especially with current prices).

You know if you are not using it for defense removing the lock isn't a bad way to go. I'd rather have an older one, but if it's out I'd have a new one.
If you keep your eyes open & have the cash available you will run onto an older one.

Ihave bought another M-57. It is a 4 inch in about 96-98%. I tried to buy it a month or so ago but the fellow didn't want to accept my offer.. Not a low ball but I offwered him 750. Talked to him t the show and he said he'd take my offer. So I will pick it up from him this coming weekend at another gun show. But he thinks he wants the Colt OMM I have. I also found a beautiful M-29-2 44 yesterday. Problem is it is a 8 3/8 inch gun but in the presentation case with tools and owners manual. A setious 98% gun...trying to convince myself to buy it..He wants 850 bucks...A lot of money to me for a gun I'll probably never shoot. I may buy it just to sell. Hate to see him sell it to some goober who will just abuse such a nice gun.

Stay away from the .44 mag Smith, you'll thank me later. It's a well known fact the .44 mag is suggested for people that can't handle the .41 mag.

Well I can still handle the 44s I have. I did sell the 500S&W...Not because of the recoil...it was so heavy I could carry a shotgun on a sling just as easily...and it was a mountain protection gun. As I said.I like the 4 inch guns.

Boy if it were me I'd keep the Colt OMM, those are fantastic shooters. But it is your gun do what pleases you.

Sounds like a few people are getting lucky with .41s...

chaim...if you look around you'll find an older 57/57-1 for about the same money that a new 6" IL gun sells for..and the fit and finish will be much nicer.

The .41 is a great cartridge & the 58 is a great vehicle for it, easy packing, accurate, & in every sense a magnum!
However let's not forget Ruger makes a very nice .41 too both SA & DA!
I hear good things about the Taurus too.

Frank I have a BH 41 and it is ok. Have also had a Taurus or two..and while ok not up to S&W quality...but they aren't up to S&W prices either. I do like Ruger Single Actions and even bought one this last weekend....a BH convertible 38/357-9mm NIB for 400 bucks. I only bought it cause it was a 4 5/8 inch and the price WAS as they say right. The 41 BH is also a 4 5/8 inch gun. Just gravitate to S&W for an unknown reason... yeah unknown! If I buy a double action I will buy a used S&W before spending near the same amount on a new Ruger. I do feel the Redhawk is a bit stronger gun though. But I won't load to extra high pressures anyway.

Skeet the older I get the more conservative I become in loading. I feel if I need more power, get a bigger gun rather than load the one to the red line. The .41 is about the right level loaded full power it's easier to shoot than the .44 ( don't get me wrong I love the .44) but the .41 will do most of what a .44 will. If I need more than that I need a rifle! Maybe a good 12 bore with slugs.
I also like the Ruger SA revolvers especially the ones on the lighter original frame. They are very easy packing six-guns & I am a big fan of SA revolvers.

yeah..Me too. I load a heavier than normal bullet for my bear loads at a conservative velocity of under 1100 FPS. The 41 will do anything the 44 will other than the real heavy bullets...which I don't use anyway. And if I had a bear confrontation I would prefer a good 12 ga with slugs myself. I like SA guns but do prefer DAs...I have 5 or 6 SAs but usually carry the DAs. My wife carries the Ruger BH 45 Colt around the ranch...summer and winter. Summer first 3 are shot and the rest are 250 gr Keith type loads at about 900 FPS..6 of the latter in winter. She does not trust our resident wolfies. BIG critters. I either carry the 4 inch M-57 or a 3 1/2 inch M-27-2..an easy shooter(this is around the ranch). 41 in the mountains. Not too worried but we even have a resident mountain kitty. But the older I get the less I trust wild critters....and we are at the end of the road. LOL

Wow I'm not a big fan of wolves, I don't trust them either & they do raid the ranchers livestock. I could do without them, we do get to hunt them though.
I don't trust wild carnivoirs either & we have Grizzlys to think about while you are Elk hunting.
Being at the end of the road could have it's advantages!!!!

We avas many as 6 wolves in out yard at one time. They pretty much travel from the Beartooths to the Bighorns and that is where we are. We do have some resident wolves. Lost one cow to something..but by the time you find 'em you can't prove what killed it. Where I elk hunt the grizzlies consider a rifle shot like a dinner bell. We have many of the YNP "problem bears". And yeah the end of the road can be good...but idiots just drive right up and decide to go deer hunting. In back of our deeded land we have about 40,000 acres of BLM...But usually too far for people to cross all that to hunt on our place. Heck we only control a bit less than a 1000 acres and being from Montana you know what dry ground is... but we have mulies back there and whitetails down around the house. They think our garden is planted JUST for them

Wolves & cougars=shoot, shovel and shut up. Planting a garden at my house is pointless too, the moose like every thing I plant.

SSS is pretty popular here too. This year I bought a tag, I've had several people tell me they've seen wolves.
We get problem bears from YNP too wish FWP would stop that. If they are a problem in one place what makes people think they won't be in a different place???? Sheesh some people's children.

Yeah, they capture the bears... take 'em down to the end of the Southfork Rd SW of Cody 47 miles and turn 'em loose again. Two days later they are standing on the mountain looking down at Cody. They live on the road in the park. Like they are going to take the hard way of living after being moved? Sure they will! As far as the wolves here in Wyoming we can't hunt them. They have NO fear of man. Many are large. Think of a 200 pound German Sheppard. Also think of a 200 or more pound dog that really knows how to kill. A 2000 pound bull has no chance around a wolf. And they almost never hunt alone. When we had the wolves in the yard a while ago... I was 30 feet from them. They just looked at me like I was just another hunk of meat. The big ol male weighed well in excess of 200 pounds. A VERY large dog.

I've been trying to draw moose and sheep for years, there will probably be an envelope from Helena in my mailbox with both tags the day of my funeral. Neighbors spotted a nice goat on the ridge above my house recently, getting way too old to be chasing them again.

..yes, I have the 4.2" Redhawk..one of the most shootable .41 DA revolvers I have ever owned. Shot my best ever DA 50 yard group with the gun last year...

The sixth shot was just off the plate at 7:00 o'clock by an inch...this is a 6" paper plate...



Much better gun then the current crop of S&Ws...
