Before we get too giddy...

Actually, now that our country is in a better place... it's not a bad idea to do everything we can to expose and work against places where 2A rights are being restricted... Yes, every state gets to go it's own way - but the forces for good in those places could probably use a bit of help (in any way we can....).

If I remember correctly, the last time some state(s) wanted to secede from the union, it caused a big uproar, and an even bigger war. Good luck with that.

For those who say Trump is not a politician, he may not be, but his BFF are, as in Guiliani, Cristi, and Gingrich. Guiliani in the Supreme Court, Cristi as Secretary of Transportation? I wouldn't want any of them to be able to exercise power on a national level in any federal post whatsoever.

As much as most here hold guns in high regard, sorry, but to me they're not the single most important issue facing this country right now. I'm not sure having a failed egomaniac in office is going to help put this country back on the right track.

Believe it or not, some lefties now started a movement for California to secede from the US because US policies don't match California feelings. I can't remember any details but I promise you I'm not making this up.

Well, they can have whatever movement they want to have, but California does not have the legal right to secede and they aren't going to war. The US does not readily give up any of its own lands, as noted in 1865. The details you can't remember are quite important here. The legal wrangling that would be necessary for this to happen simply is not realistic. The rest of the US isn't going to give up the income that is California, nor the prime west coast ports that are so important for the overall economy.

If there is anything I have learned over the decades is that the fight for the 2nd is never over. Yes, we must stay vigilant and on top of restrictive legislation at all levels in every state and town. That never changes, no matter who goes in the White House. Obviously Trump was night and day a better choice on the 2nd than Hillary, and we dodged a nuke as far as Supreme Court Justice picks are concerned, but the fight is never over.

I agree. Clinton is far more anti-gun than Trump, but keep in mind that Trump supported the AWB and was a Democrat most of his life. If ever there was an opportunity for national concealed carry reciprocity and making suppressors "over the counter" w/o all the ATF garbage, this is it. Let's see if he delivers on the newly pro-2A stance on which he campaigned.

Yes, Sir. I will rest on my laurels today, with or without your consent. Folks like you can't stop and smell the flowers for even a single instant. Carry on your never ending hopeless quest for perfection.

I feel sadness and sorrow for you.
My consent for you to feel giddy or to rest on your laurels was neither stated nor implied. IN fact, I specifically did state feel giddy if you wish. It is a confirmation of your own wishes, not a demand for my permission. And in fact, I do still have roses in bloom and I stop to smell them each day. I will even be going out to smell the gun smoke this weekend. How's that?
But I won't stop being vigilant..
I feel sorry that you feel sorry. And that's a sorry situation.

You're still sorry That is a lifetime condition no doubt. Sorry you are sorry that I am sorry and try to keep the Gunsmoke out of your sorry negative nose! :D

Trump courted the gun vote to get votes.
He has never been a strong supporter of firearms.

Don't expect major changes anytime soon, guns were a campaign side issue & will not be anywhere near the top of his list in the immediate future.

Anything positive he may do in that area will most likely be minor & down the road a ways.

We didn't get a Messiah who'll "save" us, we merely got the lesser of two evils.

The Major of the two evils, being a lifetime corrupter and criminal, is more than "merely" to me. It's a gigantic, positive,SCOTUS, Obamacare, Iran changing deal. Think of HRC behind the wheel of this cartel of chaos.

If Trump had lost, this thread would not exist and even this forum would be devastated and in panic mode.

Let's just be cool and see what The Man starts doing in 72 days. That's when the real entertainment begins.

I cannot wait.

My point is that I see too many people expecting too much too soon in the area of gun rights from Trump.

Much Internet "Yay! We're saved!, Now we can get everything fixed the way we want!!!!"

There's nothing in the man or his history to justify many of the expectations & assumptions I see.
Very much a wait & see, and gun issues will not be either simple, immediately addressed, or guaranteed to go in the direction that some people are assuming they will.

As the title of this thread says- Before we get TOO giddy....

I'm not sure having a failed egomaniac in office is going to help put this country back on the right track.

Failed egomaniac?
I guess that failed means getting elected POTUS?
Egomaniac, yes.
Narcissist? yes
Bully? yes
Failed? ummmm, I'd hate to see what a success is if this is a failure.

I agree to a point, Denis.

There is way too many more pressing needs that the new president has on his plate than gun rights. The best thing that we have going for us is we won't have a fear of the new man in the seat going after our guns and rights. As for any future legislation for our gun rights, that is probably way down the road. So, no news is good news here because Trump won't be attacking us and we can just go on enjoying our sport and hobby without fear.

The two key points I see in Trump's win are that he won't be aggressively attacking gun rights, as the Hillary vowed to do, and that he will (hopefully) appoint more second amendment-friendly supreme court positions.

Whether he'll move to actively strengthen other gun-related issues is entirely unpredictable & should not be deliriously (or giddily) assumed. :)

Koolmoose mentioned 2018 and that is significant. The party in power frequently gives up seats in the mid terms.

The time to get something done is now. He is coming in with a unique relationship with both the Dems and the GOP, and he hasn't got much, if any political capital. But he does have guts, and if he wants something and the Congress sees no reason to fight him, it'll pass.

But I think most all of them will put higher priorities on other issues; immigration, health care, trade etc

YEP. I think we're gonna need help here in Oregon. we have some very anti 2A folks in the legislature, as is our Governor.

I agree with this. And we don't need him to give us better gun laws or undo some we don't like, as long as he leaves us alone it's monumentally better than having a 2nd Amendment hater as POTUS. I am confident he will select far better people for the SC.

I also agree with this. So many things people on both sides are worried about aren't even on the radar. And include jobs in there.

As in business failure. His "fortune" is not all he'd have you believe. How many times have you declared bankruptcy? Probably a few times less than him. He lost daddy's money several times.

Without any information on a new President's clear, planned actions (other than vague speeches about goals), keeping very Low Expectations is often the best perspective.

His briefings on very complex situations around the Middle East, Russia, the South China Sea will absorb much of his energy and attention. Never mind baffling domestic problems and the "Affordable" Care Act, which is already entrenched in our huge medical industry, and nullifying Stacks of regs which limit business growth.

It is the only way to limit disappointment in the long-term.
Any positive actions on the Second Amendment--no matter how few--will be a welcome surprise.
What can he do about oppressive regs in NJ, NY, CT, MD, CA etc?

Nevada voted (although just barely) to require background checks for private transfers. Steve Wynn was on Fox prior to the election trying to make up for having donated $50K without reading the fine print, pointed out that this covers not only sales, but any "transfer" at all, giving an example of a serviceman leaving his personal firearm with his fiancée when going on overseas duty, if they didn't visit an FFL first he's now a criminal.

Did they seriously not have any provisions for temporary transfers or immediate family exemptions? Did they really get screwed even worse than we did here in CO?

I know that you are not. I saw it on Fox News today. If successful, California would have one of top ten economies in the world. Can this proposal get any traction in the Golden State? :D

What are you smoking? California is sucking federal dollars just to stay afloat with all the freebies to illegals and other social welfare programs. The state is bankrupt. And without Colorado's H2O, there is literally water water all around with not a drop to drink.

Even if they could secede legally, they couldn't do it logistically. TX and AK are the only states that could.

Not that I would mind. It would be awesome if Californians would stop flooding our state and influencing the politics (and making our roads extremely hazardous). As well, the Democrats would never win the presidency again without CA's 55 electoral votes.

Considering that something like half of new businesses go under in the 1st 3 yrs, I don't think that him bankrupting 4 of them is a bad record at all.

It's no different than before. The political makeup of Congress is mostly the same and we now have to deal with known RINO's who didn't support the candidate and who are still in office.

The aftermath of the Leaks will consume a lot of political capital and what gets passed will likely be a lukewarm set of mild reversals that amount to a lot less than what some expect. CA laws are a 2A disaster and short of their State government becoming insolvent there's no leverage to fix their situation or NY or CT or MA or NJ. National CCW reciprocity will be nice, so will the HPA but the reality is that they could be compromised severely or given a long distance implementation to allow a lot of further negotiation.

All we have is a President Elect. A "mandate" is never as overwhelming as it looks in the rear view mirror of history.

For Tony K. (re: oregon's leadership...)

As a prominent "radio person" says - work to defeat them, period. Looking at the disturbances over on that side of the country since the election - y'all have a long way to go....

With the election of Trump we won a big battle, but the war will go on. If you think we can now sit back and rest for a while, I beg to differ. I live in Washington State, where Seattle drives everything, and I can assure you the loonies here will not be resting. They are dreaming of following California's lead and passing legislation to outlaw what they call assault weapons and high capacity magazines. If the legislature won't pass it, they will get the signatures for another one of their initiatives, like that which brought us I-594. Then, with money from the local rich, like Paul Allen, Bill Gates and then, of course, New York nanny, Michael Bloomberg, they will proceed to use their money to promote and buy their anti- Second Amendment point of view. So, Red Wind, you can go ahead and rest on your laurels, but some us who reside in California, Oregon and Washington can't afford the luxury.

It's sad Phil. I was going to rest for a week and you took it all personally because you are trapped in a sea of blue and can never relax and breathe normally. I am so sorry my moments of joy have bothered you so much. If HRC had won, you would not even be posting at all. You'd be crying and so would I.

Try for some more perspective. Perhaps it will make you feel better. And don't take me so seriously. I can be sardonic and satiric and many times that does not register in plain text as a normal FTF conversation would. The emoticons can only help so much. Here's one.:) That was a smile! That was for DJT's win!

I feel for your plight in Washington. All my relatives are in New Jersey, almost all are Conservatives and are miserable. However, for so many reasons besides guns, they cannot simply pick up and move. You are probably in the same boat.

Whatever, your life will be better now that WJC & HRC have been permanently disposed of. Stay positive and stay safe.
