Looking for a new sling for a FN 30.06 and would be interested to hear recommendations. A comfortable carry as well as shooting sling.

LoL. 1907 was my first answer, too. Even though it's a love/hate relationship.

Love it as a shooting support.
Hate it as a drill item.
The range of adjustments is incredible.

All that being said, I hate slinging arms over the shoulder. If I have to sling arms, I'd much rathe rhave either a single or a triple point. But, those are never leather.

I like the Biothane military sling by Turner Saddlery. It's what I replace my leather slings with when they wear out and what I put on new aquisitions.

Frankly, I've found that most mass produced slings are like anything else mass produced, a study in compromise. A few years back I decided that I would have all of my future slings custom made. Find a good leather smith, and work with him/her to get exactly what you want.

I have also used a set of 1" or 1.25" reins. A leather punch and a couple of rivets and you van make your own sling. 20161202_123825.jpg 20161202_113503.jpg
This is a sling from a set of my old reins.
You can buy reins at a tack shop or farm store. Rivets too.

Galco Ching Sling
More of a shooting than carry sling, but it works okay for carry on a not too heavy rifle.
1907 when a third swivel isn't practical.

I have done the same thing and have come to prefer a braided leather sling. It is functional and beautiful. I found one trimmed with rattlesnake skin, but the leather is so thick that it's only good to look at, not so good for carrying. My point here is that only through trial and error will you discover what works for you. I have several slings hanging in my gun cabinet that never get used. Those would be the error part of the trial and erfor.

I can't say enough about them. For the money an excellent sling. I'd advise the 1" version over 1.25".

I also use and like Montana Slings but the width I prefer depends on the rifle. For example, I much prefer the 1-1/4" version on my Talkeetna that weighs 9lb as shown or my 8400 WSM (converted to .308 Win), but prefer the 1" version on an 84M that weighs around 6.5lb.

M1907 style.

I have a couple of super slings, they work well for the weight. But the 1907 in leather is my favorite.

In the past I'd say the Montana sling, but then found the Rhodesian version of the Ching sling from andysleather.com. It runs like a Ching sling but only needs 2 sling swivels (vs. 3 for the Ching). Andy, a fantastic guy, also licensed this patented design to thewilderness.com who make a fabric version. While not leather, the fabric version WORKS GREAT. Lightweight, strong, super easy to loop up and... $29! Plus it fits nicely inside a gun sock and takes up little room in a safe, unlike leather slings. Works great on traditional wood stocked or "tactical" long guns. Here is a picture from thewilderness.com web site:

Shooting sling or carry strap?
For a simple carry strap, pick one you think will be most comfortable for you. For a shooting sling, it's hard to beat the M1907.

A piece of string will hold up your pants... Er... carry your rifle...

A 1907 helps you use it...

The Jim Owens All Weather Sling is a very nice (albeit $pendy) version of the 1907.
