The U.S. Army on Thursday awarded Sig Sauer a contract worth $580 million to make the next service pistol based on the company's P320 handgun.

Sig Sauer beat out Glock Inc., FN America and Beretta USA, the maker of the current M9 9mm service pistol, in the competition for the Modular Handgun System, or MHS, program.

"We are both humbled and proud that the P320 was selected by the U.S. Army as its weapon of choice," Ron Cohen, chief executive officer of Sig Sauer, said in a statement to Military.com here at SHOT Show, the world's largest gun show, taking place this week in the city.

"Securing this contract is a testimony to Sig Sauer employees, their commitment to innovation, quality and manufacturing the most reliable firearms in the world," Cohen added.

The Army launched its long-awaited XM17 MHS competition in late August 2015 to replace its Cold War-era M9 9mm pistol.

Poly striker multi-caliber, the Army has said in the past they would be looking at other calibers. I predicted long ago that what they chose would have a safety on it.
 
I pasted 3 quotes from the article below. It's based on the P320 and they submitted a 9mm and a 40, although it also says the army is looking for something "more potent" than the 9mm.

I picked up 2 P320's recently, the 45 compact and 357 SIG carry. Sig really hit a home run with it, and they are my primary carry guns.

"One of the major goals of the effort is to adopt a pistol chambered for a more potent round than the current 9mm. The U.S. military replaced the .45 caliber 1911 pistol with the M9 in 1985 and began using the 9mm NATO round at that time.
In the press release, the service didn't offer any details about what caliber the new Sig Sauer pistol will be."

"A source with knowledge of the company's submission said the winning handgun is based on its P320 model. Sig touts the product as "modular" and "adaptable," with interchangeable grips, multiple sizes and calibers that can be converted between 9mm, .357SIG and .40SGW."

B,b, but isn't the .40 caliber dead?
 
They MIGHT choose 357 Sig, but I think 40 S&W would be a mistake for the same reason 45 will never come back. One of the key objectives of military handgun rounds is barrier and light body armor penetration. Hot 9mm loads do that much better than 40 or 45 caliber. I'd imagine 357 Sig would be even better.

If we were smart we'd do the same thing the Russians are doing. Their new pistol is chambered for 9mm, but built to take much hotter than standard rounds while still functioning with standard 9mm ammo.

I don't really care much which company gets the contract.

SWEET and congrats to SIG. The P320 is a fantastic pistol. I expect demand for them will pick up quite a bit on the consumer end not that they are selling bad now.
 
You coulda knocked me over with a feather when I saw that earlier! I figured the Army was just kicking the tires like they do now and again, and that they'd shelve this competition like they always do. It seems I was wrong! The Sig 320 is a fine gun, and if some variation of that is what they chose I'd say they did well.

Now, if they'd adopt the HK 416 to go along with it...

Would like to see this on a real news station or *.gov site though. Cause you know..just cause it's posted on the net don't exactly make it true.
 
Color me shocked. I would've expected the M9A3 to hold out. I'm kinda torn on this one ... I packed the M9 for the second half of my military career and have great affection for the Beretta (no less a distinguished handgunner such as Bill Wilson states the Beretta 92 is his favorite pistol other than the 1911); although I love the classic P-series SIGs, this news is sorta bittersweet. (Well, except for the fact that Big Army isn't going Glock.)
 
Very interesting choice. Didn't see that coming. Figured it would be years before the Armed Forces got serious about selecting a new pistol.
