Walther PPS or Springfield XDs 9?

If HK offered a slim single stack 9mm or 45 to compete in this size class, I'd be all over it.

" Add that the paddle style mag release is great for left handed carry as it won't get activated by accident."

I really like the paddle mag releases on all my HK's, and I definitely see it as a plus on the Walther. Doesn't the M2 come available with a button release too?

Yeah, I doubt that's going to happen with HK's because as civilians "you suck and we hate you" approach. Don't get me wrong, I'm not slamming HK, but their priority definitely seems to be more geared to duty and plain clothes LE type stuff. That said, I love me some HK's.

I can't say enough about the PPS Classic. It's my go-to EDC. It shoots as well as it carries.

While I understand where that notion came from in the past, I feel HK's attention to the civilian market has drastically improved. The P30SK, P2000, and P2000SK are definitely geared towards concealed carrying civilians. Likewise, when I visit the HK forum folks who have to contact customer service have nothing but good things to say. My experience mirrors that sentiment. The "captive" recoil spring on my P30SK was slipping off the end of the assembly (the gun still worked fine). I contacted HK and they sent me a new assembly one with a design fix within a week. They responded to my email within two minutes. Their service was excellent, and I'll keep buying HKs because of that.

Anyway, back to the topic at hand. Even though the M1 sports the paddle mag release, of the two guns, I still favor the XDs. The main reason is that I have larger hands and I've always struggled to get a proper trigger reach on small autos. That's why I carried a revolver. When I tried on the XDs, the trigger reach actually worked for me. I bought it that day. The PPS just doesn't fit me quite right.

Does the new PPS have that same thing where if the backstrap comes loose the gun won't fire? If yes, go with the XDs, if no, go with the PPS.

No. The PPS M2 removed the Quicksafe feature and made the back strap all one piece.

Personally I hate the M2 PPS. No rail which is forgivable. The grip is absolutely uncomfortable in my hand. The extra bulge added to the rear of the grip makes the trigger reach feel forced.

So, I am looking to reconfigure my concealed carry. Specifically, because I want something with a pic rail that can hold a small weapon light.

I've narrowed it down to the PPS or the XDs 9.

Looking for wisdom. Pros and cons of each?

Thank you!

My PPS-1 in .40 is the best subcompact auto I own, and I've tried most of them. Comfortable to shoot and very accurate for a small pistol. I like the paddle mag release too.

I own an XDs 9MM that is easy to shoot and accurate with Tritium sights added after the fact. Just shot a new XDs .45 with original sights and it shoots quite low. Will have to gunsmith the sights. Delightful guns. No experience with the Walther. But if you will concealed carry, it will have to be holster, not Sticky pocket carry.

For pocket carry, I purchased a Ruger LC9S that is lighter, smaller, and with round edges. The same time I shot the XDs .45 I pulled out the LC9S that I haven’t fired in a long time and it was a surprisingly nice shooting gun, still accurate and comfortable with a decent trigger. A place in my gun cabinet for both.

The Quicksafe "feature" was removed from the PPS M2. That said, it was a non-issue on the original pistol. A quick Google search will show that almost all "failures" of this design were caused by people modifying or otherwise boogering with the pistol.

It's just as easy to begin disassembling some pistols (rendering them unable to fire) than it is to remove the backstrap of the original PPS,

I have a PPS M2 and have sot my friends XDS and the PPS is much more comfortable to shoot. Both are accurate. I would rate everything better on the PPSwith night sights.

Except it did happen.. Plenty of P7's still out there...

True. However the weight of the P7, the fact that it heats up quickly, and the current asking prices make it a poor competitor in my opinion.

To compete with today's market, I envision a skinny P30SK or a skinny VP9SK to be a better competitor.

That is in no way saying the P7 is a bad gun, and I would definately love to own one. I just can't justify the money, and I wouldn't carry it. My XDs and P30SK sort of surpass the P7 for carry ease and low weight.

This is what I got -- VERY happy with it. (stock photo from Internet)

The deal breaker was the special that Springfield Armory has going on now -- Four new mags, mag holster, and gun holster... ALL FREE with the purchase of a new Springfield Armory pistol.

LOVING IT!

Thanks to all who offered their input!
