Lever 22

The 96/22's were pretty cool rifles and took most 10/22 accessories and aftermarket parts. Not sure why they didn't catch on but I do remember wishing for a walnut stock. Always thought one would be cool with one of the Green Mountain octagon barrels.

The only gun that I have ever had regrets about selling was a Winchester 9422M XTR that I bought brand new back in the late 70s. It was the nicest looking rifle I have ever owned. Ended up trading it for another gun that I thought I needed worse. Bad decision. A few years back, I got the urge for another .22 mag lever action. Did not really want to spend the bucks it would take for another 9422M. Started looking at a Henry Frontier (octagon barrel) in .22 mag, and my wife bought it for my birthday. Appearance wise it does not hold a candle to the XTR, but man does it shoot. Incredibly accurate with iron sights, and my old eyes do not work too well with irons. Any of the .22 lever guns already mentioned would be a good choice. Get whatever suits your fancy. I like my Henry just fine.

I think the best lever 22 is the Marlin 22M ( mounty, the carbine version ) Along side the Marlin 1894C in 357. Even thoose guns are years apart they are similar siz and almost look like a set.
