Hi Ya'all. I recently purchased a Pietta Colt Paterson replica and had it jam up due to percussion caps getting into the mechanism...my fault--I didn't know better at that time. I do now! Long story short: The smashed percussion cap wound up breaking the spring end of the cylinder "bolt." This I replaced. I also ordered some other small parts--just in case. Anyway, I just want to know one thing. Will some knowledgeable person please tell me the relationship of the handspring to the hand...on a Paterson? Does the spring push the hand from the top (meaning backside of the hand) or does it push it from the bottom side (meaning from in front of the hand)? Thus far, I have found no diagrams that are clear on this point. Yeah, I know I should have watched more closely what I was doing when I disassembled the mechanism, but you know how that goes sometimes. The bolt and other parts work as they should...drop when they are supposed to drop and lock when they are supposed to lock. Once I install the cylinder pin, however, the bolt stops working properly (does not retract) and I cannot slide the cylinder in place. Ideas please? There are no gunsmiths here that I can use. I will be forever in your debt.

The spring pushes on the back side of the hand. I just am finishing tuning a Patersen! (Great timing for your question!!)

Hey Fingers! How about I send you a "slick" Patersen this week?! Its awesome! Just doing some fine tuning . . .
I intend to take some pictures so folks can see a "How to" on disassembly/ re-assembly. Gotta make the screws pretty fist though.

Well, they are "different" but outside of a couple of extra parts, not that bad. I looked to see if there was a "how to disassemble" on the net but found nothing so, I want to use yours and take some photos and maybe get some on the net.

That sounds like a good thing! I know they're a bit more complex than a later Colt revolver.

Cooldill - If mike can make the Patterson as reliable as my '61 Navies - it would be worth it. Get one with the loading lever though. Reloading and capping the Piettas without the LL is at best cumbersome.
