Texas Hog purposed gun decision

"I'm going to get a gun------because I'm an American and I can."

I can't think of a better reason than that.

I don't live in hog country, it's too tough for them here, so I have no recommendations on what to get but get something and go out and enjoy it.

Muzzle blast is a big part of the reason I don't like short barreled centerfire rifles

Agreed, no reason for an 18" barrel .308. I vote for the .44 mag. over the .357 mag. My hog rig is a Sako Finnlight 6.5x55. Here's three hogs taken last weekend in Texas with it.

The 6.5x55 passed completely through both 200+ pounders on the right, using factory ammo. The 6.5x55 hits like a .308 but without the blast and recoil.

If I were to get a 6.5; it'd be a 6.5 Creedmoor; Since a Ruger Precision in 6.5Creedmoor is on my short list for next year's birthday.

As far as blast.. I think the most blast I've ever seen in my life was actually a dude in the next booth at the range shooting a .44Mag out of a 2.25" snubby..

My vote is slowly favoring Remington 7600 in 308; and having a Smith not chop it; but go ahead and put a thread on it so I can either put a can or at least a hybrid muzzle break or flash suppressor.

Nice Bacon!

Hope you didn't pay to hunt those

Want and need. My 6.5x55 works great on hogs and is my favorite rifle. The 30-30 I use on hogs was my son's first deer rifle that he wanted to sell when he got his 30-06 but I don't like to sell firearms as a rule. So I told him he couldn't and commandeered it.

If someone has a deer rifle that is all they need for hogs IMO. I don't like to admit it but I'd probably do just fine with my AR shooting the 64 grain PP's it prefers. I could get by with all of my non Rimfire hunting needs with only one rifle and have a number of them that will fill the bill.

What is the fun in that? I don't need AR's in 6.5 Creedmoor and .338 Federal, a 6.5 SAUM, a Rigby Highland Stalker in .275 Rigby, two Henry Long Rangers rebarreled to .257 Roberts and 7mm-08, a .404 Jefferey, a Savage 99 .250-3000, a 6mm-06, 1:7 twist 22-250 and a .300 H&H. But I'm always working on a way to get them all.

Torian, what kind of mount on your M1A? I am thinking of finally scoping mine after 10 years and looking at a Bassett mount.

It's an ARMS mount. Since my receiver is an LRB (mil-spec), I had a pretty stable platform for mounting the scope. I used ARMS #22 extra low rings as well.

WRONG!! They are all NEEDS... NEED NEED NEED NEED NEED..

I use a 20 inch barrel on my suppressed 308 and a 8" on my suppressed 300. The suppressed 300 is as long as a normal 16" barrel with the suppressor attached. You put a can on a 26" barrel and it's like your carrying around a pool cue.

If it were me, I would just buy an AR 10 like an SR762. But that's a shorter barrel than you are looking for. Be even better to have it in 6.5 creed or 260 remington.

I will share from personal experience that a Sierra Game King in 165 grains, which is an HP, shot from a Remington 700 over any 308 powder giving you a 2600 fps-ish velocity will hit those hogs like the Hammer of God.

I think that the 165 Game Kings that I have used were soft points, but 'tis been a while. Did they change them?
