Here it is , 11:30. Saturday night. I remove my carry gun and pull the slide back...GOOD GRIEF!! That is dirty! So I stripped it and the grease has dried and is caked with lint and crud...I'm not sure it would have functioned...at all!
So I get the kit out and do a quick clean up. This time it just gets a light oil. Once a week I'll do this. Wipe it clean inside and a light oil.

When prepping for a range trip I'll apply proper lube and a good clean afterwards. Then light oil. This has got to be better than caked, dry, lint/dirt filled grease. That was just ugly!

How do you deal with this? Light oil or what? Is my plan good or bad?

I never use oil or grease in any of my carry guns because of what you have experienced in your OP. I use a high quality dry lube called Hornady's One Shot. It ranks very high in tests attracts almost no link, dirt, or other debris. Wouldn't use anything else in my carry guns.
 
Hornaday One Shot is case lube for reloading - I used to use it to lube bullets for sizing. :) I use Weapon Shield and properly applied works just fine even in a high dust area like southern AZ. I do tend to clean my carry pistol every month or so for that exact reason, especially during summer time when acidic sweat wants to eat through finishes.
 
The only thing I use grease on is Garands. That's what they were designed to run on. I use old Breakfree with PTFE to lube almost everything else. The vehicle will evaporate but the PTFE stays. I've taken guns out that have been in storage for years and they functioned perfectly. I use Dri-Slide to lube ARS. It worked perfectly in SE Asia in 68 and 69. It works perfectly now. Lube the gun and it stays lubed.
 
The LSA that us old timers used in the service was a grease. Most people don't realize that there are greases that are like cooking oil at room temp.


I shoot my EDC at EVERY range trip. Might only be a mag or two but I shoot it. Then I clean and lube it.

FWIW, I use light oil on carry guns, and try to remember to give them a quick cleaning every month or so. As far as what happened in your case, I wouldn't have cleaned it. I would have carried something else and then gone to the range with the dirty gun and fired at least a few rounds of the carry ammo just to see what happened, then clean it and carry it again.
 
Hi guys! I knew y'all would provide some real direction for me.! And thank you, very much! I'll see if I can find one of these dry lubes.
FL-NC and J-Morris...I did think of that but my timing wasn't good for a range trip. You are right...be nice to know that answer! I plan to not let that gun get that bad again!

EDCs come in two flavors, open and concealed.
The open type are exposed to the weather more and should have light oil.
The concealed, you can get away with a dry lube. Due to the fact They're is exposed to more lint.
But you should do a weekly wipe down and a monthly cleaning.
Don't forget your daily check. The rule is, if it was off your person and out of your sight, check that it is loaded and ready.
 
Tonight I re-read all responses and these are good info and thoughtful suggestions.

I should say...my gun was not "packed" with stuff...it was just worse than I expected and more than I ever let accumulate. When I started the wipe down it seemed stuck to the frame and slide. Didn't expect it, but, when I added a little Hoppe's to the rag...it wiped easily.

I do wish I could have made the range trip to see how it shot. Would have covered that "need to know" in my mind!

I tend to pull my carry guns apart and give them a quick oiling and wipe down about every three weeks. I have never drawn my carry gun and not had it function on the range, so I plan to maintain this maintenance schedule.

For starters I don't pocket carry.

Second I put Tetra GunGrease on what slides and Mobil 1 synthetic motor oil on what pivots.

I use Tetra Gun Grease because it resists getting hard. In fact I have never had it get hard and caked on my guns. A big plus is it never runs off the way oil will.

Mobil 1 is cheap and a little goes a long way. I just drain the last few drops from the container when I change the oil in my vehicles in a ketchup size bottle. I then use it to fill some small plastic bottles I got for a hobby store. As I said a little goes a long way. A small drop or two on the trigger and hammer keeps them well oiled.
 
I've actually taken my LCP right from my pocket (where I carry it) at the range and had it jam after the first shot. I hadn't cleaned it in about 6 months and there was an incredible amount of pocket lint in there. I won't make that mistake twice.

I still use oil (Eezox) on all my guns, but I do make sure to regularly disassemble and wipe down the parts on my carry guns now.
 
I casually inspect mine every day as I disrobe. if its dirty, I brush it off. if its dry, I throw a little clp on it.
it always gets some action with my carry ammo whenever I get to go out plinking.

what will really sneak up on ya, is debris in the magazine! so I rotate them out and clean 'em up.
 
I'm with him also....... Even non-carry guns that live in the safe get a six month checkup if they haven't been used for that long. I have a log book with every gun in it and use that to check how long since a particular gun has been fired or just cleaned. So nothing goes over six months without at least a good check-up, inspection, wipe down, etc. Any gun that gets fired gets cleaned within a couple days and the date and number of rounds fired gets logged. Carry stuff gets fired at least monthly so they never have to worry about getting "neglected" for a whole six months.
 
I use Strike-Hold on all my carry guns. Dries completely and leaves slick coating that will not attract or hold sand, dirt, pocket lint, etc. They used to ship it to the sandbox in 55-gal drums! ;)
 
I use Permatex copper based anti-seize on slide rails and CLP on everything else that requires lube. Anti-seize can be messy if you use too much, and it doesn't take much at all to lube slide rails. Everything that gets CLP just gets a light coating.
