Threads starting off asking a variation of the above question are sometimes fun, but not very practical as they are based on a fantasy situation, such as "because the government took the rest away", or "because zombies rule the Earth". This thread is going to be different.

If you had to choose only seven firearms to take with you on an extended road trip across the US, what would they be and why? The trip will be at least a season and maybe even a year or more. After packing the necessities for you and your traveling companions- food, water, clothes, medical supplies, bedding and other sundries for a comfortable trip, you find you only have room for seven firearms and their ammo and gear.

What seven do you take and why? What shooting events do you plan to attend? What would you hunt and where? What friends would you go shoot with?

A few ground rules-
-You don't have to visit all fifty states
-A lock box for the firearms has been installed in your RV
-If you take an AR or a Thompson Center or other firearm that lets you switch barrels/uppers, you can take no more than two additional uppers/barrels
-You have familiarized yourself with the pertinent laws

MY CHOICES
At the top of the list is my AR pistol I've dubbed the Wolf Pup. It has an 11.5 inch barrel, Omega suppressor and SOB brace. It's short, it's fun and it's my first choice for self defense in my home. My wife and I lived in out motorhome for a year and a half and the Wolf Pup stood guard for much of that time

My next choice would a Colt 6920 carbine. I have a friend back east that is the firearms instructor for his department and I'd be shooting drills under his tutelage with either the 6920 or the Wolf Pup. The 6920 would the second choice for defense. One of two additional uppers I'd take is a scoped 20 precision upper for varmints and the 6920 lower would be a better match than the pistol lower

My choice for a second upper is a dedicated 22 rimfire. I tried a simple drop in conversion, but it's not as accurate as I'd like.

Next up is the Para FAL. I have a couple of friends from the FALFiles and I'd take it to shoot with them. It doesn't hurt that the Para is pretty dang cool

The next choice is for my wife. She loves lever action 22s, so the Marlin 1897 Texan gets the nod

I think it's the classiest 22 Marlin makes

Can't travel without our EDCs. Next on the list is two PPQs both in 9mm. One for me, one for the wife. For myself, it was hard to choose between my PPQ and my 1911. However, the PPQ is lighter and carries twice as many rounds. On this trip, sadly the 1911 stays home. The PPQs will be carried concealed where legal and used when shooting drills

Last, but not least is the P22, because you should always have a 22 rimfire pistol and it's the wife's favorite

These are my seven choices if I had limited space while living in my motorhome traveling around the country. None are a shotgun because I'm not a shotgun guy. Guess that means I won't be bird hunting on this trip. I would miss my other firearms, but I could make do with these for a year.

What are your choices?

I probably wouldn't take seven.

1. Winchester Model 70 .30-06.
2. Browning SA .22
3. Ithaca 20 gage double barrel
4. Glock 19
5. S&W Model 34

If my wife is going, her Kahr P9.

So I'm close to seven after all.

My seven would probably be
1. AR- set up similar to 3gun rifle but without a comp
2. Henry lever .22
3. My customized S&W 1911
4. Bolt action .308
5. S&W 41
6. Ruger 10/22
7. and if I had one (hope to in another year) Wilson Combat EDC X9 for carry

1. 30-06 bolt action rifle
2. 223 Semiautomatic rifle
3. 22RF bolt or lever action rifle
4. 12Ga Shotgun pump action
5. 45ACP Semiautomatic pistol
6. 9mm-Luger Semiautomatic pistol
7. 22RF Revolver

I would love to travel around the country to just hunt in every state but you're going to run into a lot of different rules and regulations. In order to simplify this I would concentrate on upland game and waterfowl hunting and possibly whitetail deer. Then hit some game preserves or sporting clays or trap clubs and hunt some hogs to help some farmers out. But that's a lot of packing and with limited space and resources I would try to limit what firearms and its ammo to just one.

I would take my RV and visit my out-of-state relatives. Would take along a couple of shotguns to do some bird hunting with my brother. Go with three or four .22s (a Ruger 10/22, a S&W Model 34, a Beretta Model 70S, and a Ruger Mk.II Model 512), because they're always fun to shoot and everyone can use them. Probably take my trusty Hi-Power and my Ruger SR9c for plinking, range use, and for home defense (motor home that is).

Whenever thread like this get started I roll my eyes a bit. Would you really take seven guns with you for a road trip? My guess is that for most of us, unless the trip is to a shooting event or for hunting, we would take one or at most two guns with us. Asking for seven seems like more an excuse to just show off some firearms. Once on a gun forum (it may have been this one but I can't remember), I started a thread with the sarcastic title of something like "If you could only have 85 guns, what would you keep?" and some people actually took the question seriously and included a list of their "favorite" 85 guns! Even asking what one gun someone would take with them on a trip is not a very good question, for there are certainly many people who might own several guns but only use one (for consistency or other reasons) as their carry firearm and obviously would be taking that one with them. I guess I should add another stereotypical remark to this response today and mention that I used to own more than 7 guns myself, but lost them all in a recent boating accident.

if traveling to hunt and shoot. I would have a fullsize handgun for home defense, j frame or shield for ccw, 12ga pump, large cal rifle like 30-06 because every Walmart in the country carrys the ammo. 223rem semi auto or bolt for varmints. in exchange for the other 2 guns it would be a lot of ammo for everything especially the 223 and the handguns incase some drug cartel tries to kidnap me. :) In that case I would have a BAR mounted on top of a turret on the roof of the RV.

In that case I would have a BAR mounted on top of a turret on the roof of the RV.

Nice touch but I would go a bit larger: as in having a "Ma Deuce" mounted on that RV turret.

Roll your eyes all you want. For an extended weekend trip to meet with a friend in another state, I took 4 rifles and three pistols. Next month, we plan to do it again. On two separate occasions, I took trips to the east coast to work on summer contracts. On each trip I brought at least four different firearms. Even when I took a contract in California, I took at least four firearms. Each of those trips were made in a car, not the motorhome. During the year and a half we actually lived in our motorhome, we had all of our firearms with us.

For this thread, I'm not talking about taking a road trip for a week or two. I'm talking about taking an extended trip, taking a few weeks to visit different regions of the country, seeing old friends and making new ones. I made a couple of real good friends because I asked online about places to shoot in a state I hadn't been to yet.

So what, if the seven means I'm showing off? Part of the enjoyment of firearms is showing off to friends and at least one firearm is on my list to just that. I didn't start this post to see what seven firearms people would be limited to if the government took the rest away, or in preparation of the Zombie Apocalypse. I asked what seven they'd take with them on an extended trip away from home, a very real possibility. I know people who leave several firearms in locations around the country so they don't have to fly with them.

If people would only take one firearm with them on an extended trip, that's fine. I wouldn't want to. But this raises an interesting question- What is the minimum number of firearms you would take with you on an extended trip, what would they be and why? Borrowing something from a friend or from family doesn't count, unless they have something you'd travel across the country just so you could shoot it. If you've got something stashed so you've got something to shoot when you get there, what is it and why did you choose it?

My minimum list for myself and my wife would be-
-The AR pistol with suppressor in 5.56 and 22 rimfire adapter
-Two 9mm PPQs
-P22

PS- I suggest staying away from boats

Mossberg 4x4 in 30-06
Marlin 336 in 30-30
Remington 870 in 12 ga
Ruger 10-22
Ruger Redhawk in 41 Mag
Beretta PX4 in 40 S&W

So call it an American Safari:
Larger carry gun say a G19 type gun
Small carry something like a pocket .380
If you are a hunter then I think a 12 gauge, .308 and a .22 rifle.
If I'm away from home for an extended time I'm taking an AR with me.
I think that about covers it for most people. Six would let you do most everything.
If you do varmint shooting or are into Trap or Skeet then one more for each. My experience is there are sporting clays guys and varmint shooters but not so much people who do both. I'm sure there are people who do both but they are rare.

It's been a long time since I've driven across several states to shoot with relatives of mine. Back then, I had only maybe three firearms but I did take my Marlin 39AS and my SKS.

Just this spring I had planned to make a similar trip but stay within my state, so no worries about other state's laws.

For that cancelled trip, I had planned to take:

Remington RM380 pocket gun
ArmaLite M15 5.56 carbine w/ 1-4x20 scope
Ruger GSR .308 w/ 2-7x32 receiver mounted scope
Ruger Single Six convertible 9.5" barrel w/ 2x20 scope and shooting sticks
Zastava .22 WMR carbine w/ 2x20 scout type scope
Marlin 39AS rifle w/ Williams peep sight
Beretta Neos 4.5" barrel w/ TRS-25 red dot

Hmmmm. 7?
Daily carry, Glock 43.
Hunting, Tikka 695 7mm mag
Hunting/foraging .54 cal flint smoothbore
Wood critters, Ruger Vaquero 44 mag
Small game, varmints, Marlin 917 17 Mach II
Special events, AR 15, and Savage Hog Hunter 308 with suppressor.

Handguns
1.) CZ-75B, 9mm
2.) S&W 27-2, .357 Magnum, 6-inch barrel
3.) Glock 30, .45 ACP

Long Guns
1.) Eddystone Model of 1917, .30-06
2.) M1 Garand, .30-06
3.) Remington 1100, 20 gauge with rifled and IC barrels.

That's six, and they cover everything I need from self-protection to clay pigeons. And I still have an open slot in case I pick up something while on the road. If I thought I might buy two guns, I'd leave the .357 home.

BEGUN200.jpg AR15.jpg

A few years ago, being a live aboard Yacht Captain, traveling the whole East Coast seasonally, I carried the following:

Ruger Ranch Rifle ( Mini 14 ) in Stainless ( Actually the Boat's Gun, not mine )

Mossberg Mariner Tactical 12 ga (also the boats)

A full size 1911 in Stainless

A Colt Officer's Model

A Savage Model 12 BVSS in .308 Winchester

A Keltec SUB2000 ( 9mm GLOCK)

A GLOCK17

Between 1 and 3 ARs - started with a basic M4gry, Built a A2 for Service Rifle, discovered my eyes were too far gone for irons past 100 yards, built a scoped long range 18", gave the M4gry to my nephew for his birthday, built a carbine around a Recon Barrel, sold the A2.

A NAA Mini Revolver in .22LR ( So I could arm the Ships Cat )

So, I was a bit over 7 on my own, but close.

My totally uninformed opinion is people start threads like this, and others respond, just because it's interesting to see what list readers post. I note that others have a list very different from mine.

If threads like this are eye roll worthy, don't bother to play.

The agony of choice:
  1. Taurus PT111 in 9mm
  2. S&W Model 36 revolver in 38 Special
  3. S&W M&P-15 (for him)
  4. S&W M&P-15 (for her)
  5. Armi Jager AP-74 .22 LR for plinking
  6. Charter Arms AR-7
  7. Browning Auto 5 12 gauge Shotgun
The AR-7 is my wife's gun so it has to go along even if it is unlikely to ever be used.

OK, I'll play...

Colt HBAR AR15
Remington 700P (Leupold VX-III scope) in .223
Ruger #1 (Leupold VX-II scope) in 7x57
Colt 1873, 4 3/4 inch bbl, .44 special (for fondling in the trailer and around the campfire)
H&K P30 in 9mm for pistol range and full-size OWB defensive carry
H&K P30 SK in 9mm for concealed carry.
Smith and Wesson M69 in .44 magnum. Karl Nil grips. Better feel and recoil management than the 4 inch M629. A true combat magnum masterpiece!
