Hey There:

I'm thinking about picking up either a Ruger GP100 or SP101 w/ a 4.2" barrel (the SP101 only if I can't find a holster), and I need some help finding a good concealed carry holster. Specifically, I would prefer to carry it IWB or Appendix, and a shoulder holster won't work. Also I'm a slim (=wormy) guy.

I know it's hard to find stuff for GP100 revolvers with greater than 3" barrels, but I really like the 4.2".

Thanks for the suggestions!!!

Tommy Thiel makes a great product, as does Dustin over at Ozark Holsters. Both make a hybrid that will spread the weight of the gun out and keep it secure enough that you won't even notice it's there.

One to add to your list...Milt Sparks Summer Special. The holster I made for my Colt diamondback looked a lot like his (made mine before I saw his) and the revolver carried just fine.

First thing you do is get a cardboard box. A big one.
In no time at all it's going to be filled with holsters.

Everyone here that CCW's has that box.

The search for that perfect holster is eternal

So true, except mine is a large old metal filing cabinet with 4 drawers sitting next to my safe. Top drawer has holsters. Any kind you can think of. IWB, OWB, thigh, ankle & shoulder. Some well used and others almost like new.

Do you have much experience carrying other guns as heavy as a 4 inch GP for long periods of time in an IWB rig? I ask because I bought a steel commander 1911 thinking I'd be able to carry it, and within two weeks it was relegated to the safe. Just too dang heavy to be comfortable, despite a solid belt and holster. Some people do successfully carry a piece that heavy, but I'm not one of them. I'd have not bought the gun given what I know now, as I ended up trading it for an officers size 1911 with aluminium frame.

Experience has taught me that my own personal limit is about 27 oz for all day IWB carry. Of course, as the say, your mileage may vary.

Just as a data point, could you share with us what the belt and holster were?

Certainly, it was a galco belt and a king tuk. Much like the OP, I'm pretty skinny, so perhaps that's also a contributing factor?

The GP100 is on the very large side to carry concealed, especially for a lightly built guy, unless you are wearing some substantial outer garment. In the summer you are going to have a real problem with that. Since you are in Vermont, if I were you, I would just carry it openly when possible. Wintertime should not be a problem - except that big down jacket or whatever is going to have to come off when you sit in a restaurant or go into any place that is heated for any length of time. The SP101 is a much better idea for concealment no matter what holster you choose.

I think I have found concealed carry nirvana, a JM Custom Kydex George, with the "Extra Tuck" option, for the snubby SP101. I found it pre-owned, on evil-bay, and am probably going to order another one for my left* side, to fit my longer 3" SP101. This is an AIWB holster, and to be clear, JM Custom Kydex makes several AIWB holsters, for different body types; see the website for details. The George is best for my skinny build.

I may even be brave enough to order a George for a 4" GP100. I have carried a 4" GP100 comfortably AIWB, using a now-long-discontinued Eagle Industries nylon fabric rig, with a pivoting belt loop. I wonder if that pivoting loop might be important to comfort with such a large weapon, allowing it to move as I sit or stand.

*Age, and shooting too many big-bore Magnums in the Eighties, have not been kind to my right thumb/hand/wrist, so I am gradually moving toward carrying lefty "primary," though I may well tote two revolvers regularly, again, as I did in the Eighties, and the 1993-1997 and 2002-2006 time frames. I proved the concept of the George with the pre-owned right-hand holster, and now feel comfortable spending the money for a new custom lefty holster.
