I agree, always keep your handgun available to your strong hand.

Carry a "fake" wallet containing a ten, a five and a few one dollar bills, some business cards acquired from places you never shop, one of two of those "You are pre approved!" credit cards that come in the mail, grocery receipts etc. Keep your valid DL, credit card(s), cash etc in your sock leg or other well concealed location. I tell females often to carry a "fake" handbag with similar stuff in it in addition to make up and other junk.

I'm kind of a lazy guy in this way, but I would rather just give up my wallet than carry a fake, if I need something to hand over (or feign handing over). My DL shows an old address and anything to do with finances is fraud-protected.

I am lazy too. But not so lazy that I can not stuff a fake wallet in my pants or jacket pocket and the important things somewhere else, when I am going out somewhere. I often carry a fair amount of cash - not thousands, but much more than $20. Adding an expired DL with an old address is another item you can throw in the fake wallet.
 
Please cross-post this in the Legal forum and let the attorneys there explain why this is a bad concept.

I would personally feel real stupid standing in a store and digging around in my socks or drawers to pull out my cash and/or credit cards. I would probably pay extra to go to a store where the women are doing something similar.

I think that I have had success over the years by establishing eye-contact with folks who may have been "thinking about it".

Most people are very vulnerable when loading groceries (especially) in the parking lot.

For many years I have shopped during early morning (parking lots are EMPTY of wandering humans & their cars, just the way I like it :)), so I have probably had more than my share of Approaches.

I always maintain SA with peripheral vision while loading groceries and when someone approaching gets to about 20', I turn & square-up while saying, "That's close enough ... may I help you?".

Usually it has been someone with a religious pamphlet, but there were several rough-looking fellows that suddenly altered their trajectory.

EDIT: BTW, I rarely "look hard" other than the way I naturally move ... I usually have a little smile on my face, in fact.

Isn't carrying a fake or decoy wallet something that Ayoob published in one of his first books? I can see how it would work. I am just not sure if I can stand carrying anymore crap in my pockets.
 
One place that I tend to be most vigilant is at all convenience stores. Out of all the places that I have seen confrontations occur, this is #1 on my list, and according to Lt. Steven Geisenger (a 24 year Law Enforcement veteran), I am dead on.

This is what caught me. If convenience stores are the number one place you've seen confrontations occur WHY ARE YOU GOING THERE?

Don't know whether Ayoob wrote it not; I figured it out myself based on other peoples' experiences and observations. I recommend ladies do the same with handbags. Inconvenient to some? Maybe. Me, losing more cash than I would want to, getting my DL renewed every so many years, waiting for replacement CCs, losing a phone number, business card or whatever are a pain in the neck enough.

When he says "Convenience Store" I think 7-11 not a gas station. Having said that, I don't hit gas stations at night. We make a point of gassing up around half a tank so I can usually arrange to gas up in the morning.
 
Yes, I do too. The 'classic' "convenience store" , sans gas pumps, is usually in an urban setting. I avoid those like the plague. The colloquial term "stop and rob" applies to those.
 
What is "Massad Ayoob's 21-Foot Rule?" Sorry , but the author of that piece lost me right there. Well, OK, I took a second look, and made myself read it. Hmm. Well, a decent read, for the inexperienced to start learning, but nothing new here, for me, and I moved on.

There is no 21-Foot Rule. Mas has often mentioned the Tueller Drill, which is a drill, developed to demonstrate a couple of points; points that vitally NEEDED to be made at the time, and still need to be made from time to time. Anyone whose take-away is "21-foot rule" has missed the training aspect of the point. (The Tueller Drill SHOULD teach us the importance of footwork and timing!)

I do not know how the decoy wallet concept got dragged into the discussion. More Ayoob-bashing? Mas is big enough to defend himself, so I will not. Long before I heard of Mas Ayoob, however, I learned that one should not keep all of one's eggs in one basket, with "eggs" being valuables, including money. It made sense to keep my big stash of bills, ATM card, credit card, and I.D., deeply concealed, while my smaller bills, and perhaps one bigger bill, were more readily-accessible. Neither would be a "decoy," but I knew which one was more expendable.

As for looking "hard," well, in some neighborhoods, that will be seen as a challenge to fight the local chief thug. I will leave looking "hard" to guys with some fellow Marines to back them up. I will settle for looking like I would be more trouble than I am worth, which is much more subtle than looking "hard."
