Been considering this combo for woods carry. 10 rounds functioned fine and felt "warm." Barrel leaded from chamber about a third of the way down. Enormous glock smileys. I won't reload this brass. Would you be reasonably confident this ammo is safe to run through the gun, at least once?

Holy Batman, Batman!

I would bet money you will blow a case head if you keep doing that, and sooner rather than later. When you do, it'll probably ruin the magazine, and maybe ruin the frame.

Back away I say.

Yeah. Maybe I'll try a few through the G41 and see if it's any better... then maybe a "disposable" 1911? The ammo was expensive... but I don't want to blow off my hand. I imagine it's within acceptable "+P" specs but it makes me uncomfortable...

^ agreed

I run a maximum listed +P load with Accurate #5 and 200gr XTP through my G30 and they don't look anything like that. Very slight bulge with brass and almost none with nickeled.

I tried a pic but it didn't work. I'll try again. Headstamp is A USA
Don't know what that is. Hopefully not A-MERC rebranded.

According to Google, A USA is the Armscor headstamp since about 2009. If Doubletap gives you the brush off or tries to blame the error on you, I would contact Glock next. They may looking into the issue a little deeper.

An an FYI, I spoke with a tech at Underwood Ammo yesterday regarding a 9mm +P+ load they offer, and if it was safe to use in one of my guns. One of the things they suggested was looking at the spent brass to look for bulges, as it would be an indiction I should not use it.

Thanks. This is supposed to be just +P, so I would imagine it would be within SAAMI +P specs of 23,000. If it's more than that I'd say it's Doubletap's problem. Unfortunately I don't have a chronograph to help sort it.

it may be Double taps problem - BUT it's YOUR fingers..... :what:

I have read what the other folks have said on previous posts.

I have had, modified, and built from stripped frames 1911's from .22 LR, 9mm Para, .38 Super, and .45 ACP over the years. Just my $.02 worth:

IMO, the 1911 .45 ACP as designed by JMB was for a subsonic hardball round firing a large projectile. If one wants to fire anything heavier, faster, or HP bullets, one needs to throat the barrel (Jerry Kuhnhausen). Therein is the rub. The throated barrel needs to support the bottom of the cartridge case so as not to cause the bad case bulges you show.

If one wishes to do .45 +P cartridges (to me an oxymoron), one must think about replacing parts to accommodate .45 Super or .460 Rowland (specialized barrel, et al). Just boosting powder charges with the .45 ACP is going to cause problems which your cases exemplify.

If one wants a high velocity hard hitting 1911 type pistol, one should really look at this:

I am too old to spend that kind of money, but 20 years ago I would have done it if not for all other projects I had then. I regret not doing it. To me, that is the ultimate 1911 type pistol. Very heavy for a 1911 type, all steel, long dust cover, and the 5" barrel model.

If someone wants to lay $1500 on me I would go for it and I would spend the extra change.

Any takers?

A little off the topic, but a Glock 29 will also make a pretty good woods gun. With a KKM barrel you can load it up pretty good and safely. Probably the same with the G30.

Ive finished an .45 super/45 Rowland build on a springfield xd tac, and most of my info has from glock users. From what ive read glocks case support isnt very good. Couple that with ammo thats a tad hot and bulges abound. BUT that looks significantly more than id expect from a round thats even close to saami spec.

Well, if you keep using that ammo, you're asking to get hurt & also hurt your gun. If I saw that velocity alone, I'd avoid it - let alone those bulged cases. You can't get that kind of velocity with that heavy a bullet in that caliber without drastically increasing pressure. The 45 ACP is a low-pressure round. There is no real advantage with that load over a regular 45+P like the Hornady or Remington which should generate similar velocities but with a 230-gr. bullet. If you want more power, get a 10mm or a 44 Mag revolver like the Ruger Alaskan.
And, the barrel leading is another big risk with polygon rifling you should be familiar with.
