Illegal weapons will be legal to carry. That's swords, stilettos, double edged blades, spears, etc. There will be some exceptions I'm sure.

I bought a Cold Steel Heavy Duty sword cane in preparation for it. I received it yesterday. For where I cannot carry my pistol I can carry my cane. A friend on another forum told me that they ain't sharp out of the box.

I beg to differ. :cool:

 
It is very good news and something that should have been done years ago.

The new law only applies to knives. Other previously illegal weapons (clubs, knuckles, etc.) are still illegal.

Anything over 5.5" in blade length is a "location restricted" knife. That would include swords, spears, etc. Location restricted knives can only be carried by persons 18 or over and in locations not listed in the law. The list is pretty similar to where you can't carry a handgun with a permit.

No restrictions on knives with blade lengths under 5.5". All the nonsense about dirks, daggers, poniards, stilettos, etc. has been dropped.

Here's some detail that might help you avoid misinterpreting where you think you can vs. where you can't carry that sword can under the new law.

"schools or education institutions or passenger transportation of a public or private school or educational institution, businesses earning more than 51 percent of their income from alcohol to be consumed on the premises and a polling place on Election Day or during early voting...government courts or court offices; any place where a sporting event or interscholastic event is taking place; at a correctional facility or a 1,000 feet around; at hospitals or nursing facilities; at racetracks and amusement parks; at churches, synagogues or other places of worship; or in secured areas of airports. Violating this portion of the law is a third-degree felony, but the use of ceremonial blades for historical and theatrical events are exceptions.

For what my opinion is worth (you usually get what you pay for)

Cold Steel (or most anyone's) Sword canes are:

First - A serious liability. If one is actually used, even if it's clear self defense there's a good chance the user will be charged with a crime, and/or sued by the perp. It's a way of saying "I'm going to hide my antiquated weapon with the hopes I can be a Musketeer and skewer someone" to police, prosecutors, ambulance chasers, and everyone one is used against as well as their entire families.

Second - A failure as a defense weapon. There isn't a lot of sword training as a martial art today, and practitioners who do study are more likely to be in something like Kendo which uses a vastly different weapon from a sword cane. They're not particularly quick to deploy and they're not really made with sturdy construction. Remember, Lynn Thompson in his videos would have you believe Cold Steel products can end hunger, bring alignment to the stars, and discover the meaning of life. They do have some very high quality knives, but their swords are comparatively crap and I would guess their sword canes are even worse.

I actually use a Cold Steel cane, one of the pistol grip canes with the fiberglass shaft and I even have one of the carbon fiber Slim Sticks. If I need to defend myself, I'm going to be MUCH more happy with my fiberglass cane than with any sword cane ever made unless it comes with Bruce Lee resurrected and attached to it. An extremely stout cane with a heavy metal head (which the pistol grip cane has) is much better in both a defensive and an offensive role. For that matter, my stainless steel Kleen Kanteen full of water is probably going to be more effective as a weapon than a sword cane would be.

Sword canes are terribly ineffective.

Sorry, but I must respectfully beg to differ. The places you cannot carry a handgun, with your License-To-Carry, are largely the same places you will not be able to carry blades over 5.5" in length. I am not a lawyer, but must have a working knowledge of the law in order to perform my duties. Moreover, I am assuming nothing until I actually see the final language, as printed in the new Texas Penal Code. Sometimes, things get lost in the translation from signed legislation to actual printed law.

The restricted locations will be listed in the law and will be restricted whether or not signs are posted. It's actually possible that you might actually have a little more latitude in carrying a pistol with a permit than in carrying a location restricted knife. That's because although the list of restricted locations is similar, some of the locations are only off limits to handguns if a sign is posted.

For example, you can carry a concealed handgun in church or in a hospital if you have a permit and the facility is NOT 30.06 posted , but a sword cane (or any other location restricted knife) would be off limits in any church or hospital, even if no signs are posted.
 
Good post from skmo.

I have hundreds of hours of stick training. The advantages of a sword cane over a good 3' stick or cane are ouweighed by the disadvantages in use, and the true cane can go anywhere, per federal law.
 
I am aware of the restrictions as I'm finding out but then I won't be in those areas hardly ever. I find my cane adequate in parking lots, stores and public area.
 
Never carried a sword cane, but I did carry a short sword once back 25 years ago, just for grins and giggles. Got several looks, but it was perfectly legal. :) I only did it once, as noted above, it's hard to find real sword training. I do know there are clubs now that teach European sword techniques which would be very cool to learn...but I still practice my preferred defensive art of Click Pow.
That is a nice sharp blade, sir. Have you looked at the neat stuff at Kult of Athena?
