Can bulky rear sights block light gathering ability?

I have had a Remington 30-06 sitting around for a couple years,and never hunted with it,but I think I will hunt with it some this year..It has the see thru mounts ,and I don't care for them,but I can deal with them.The gun shoots pretty good from the bench..I am thinking about ditching the see thru,and mounting the scope low,but if I do it will put the objective directly behind that big ol ramped up rear sight that Remington uses,and the scope is long tubed,and the objective would be right up on the highest part of the sight..The scope is a 32 mm objective Weaver,and I an estimating that at least 25% of the objective will be blocked..I hunt mostly in the evening,and hate to loose even a little bit of light gathering abillity,I also hate to take the sight off..I have hunted with other rifles with low mounted scopes,and sights,but they did not block the objective near as much...Should I just live with the see thru mount..I don't need to hunt whitetail with a 30-06,and will probably get tired of it ,and switch to something smaller ,but It,and a 243 that I got after deer season last year are the only rifles I have that I have not killed anything with,so I will use them some this year.
 
I would take off the front and rear sights, screw plugs into the holes, and mount the lowest, best quality rings that will clear the barrel and bolt handle.

If the bases are cheap I wouldruse the opertunity to replace them also with quality ones.

I normally wouldn't worry about it,and I have had other scoped rifles with sights,but not near as blocked as this situation would be..I know that removing the sights is probably the best solution,but I hate to go that route .I would probably just deal with the see thru.
 
Why are you so reluctant to just remove the sight?

Your "see-thru" rings are keeping you from a good solid cheekweld. The rear and front sight are blocking the transition of light and image, you will gain a better view and a better shooting position by removing them and replacing the rings.

The open sights can be put back on at any time, and the screw plugs are not obtrusive at all.

I guess I could,and probably will have to..I just figure as long as they have been on the gun,they may not come off too easily,and I would hate to chew the heads up,or break something off..But I guess I will probably go that route..

If your scope is closer to the rear sight, maybe, but i doubt it. Just my 2 cents.

Thanks ! That picture helps a lot..My scope would be a good bit close to the sight,but I guess I could mount it low,and see if it causes trouble,and if it does then remove the sight..
 
Trash the see thru mounts. I'd trash both front and rear iron sights as well, the only thing they do is grab brush when walking through the woods. A QUALITY scope is more durable, reliable and useful all around. But if you want to keep them do so. The rear sight won't reduce the amount of light entering the scope one bit.

I agree about trashing the see through mounts. There is no way to get a good cheek weld. I'd leave the iron sights on. My 700 ADL has irons. It wears a Bushnell Elite 4200 3-9x40. I don't think the rear sight diminishes light gathering. Like 243winxb says you can see the front sight on low power but it's at the bottom of the sight picture and is very unobtrusive.

Wont make enough difference to see, you might see the front sight with a 4x scope, but even thats unlikely unless your trying to.
Im a scope guy, but I would leave the opens in place. They dont usually hurt anything, personally i normaly I get stuff stuck on my scope, or tangled in my sling, not the sights.
This is personal preference, but I took them off of my 7400, and put them right back on again, gun looks goofy without them.
 
Well I got around to slapping it all together today..I went with a new old stock Weaver PTDC0125.JPG kit it got off EBay..I am real tickled with it,and it still has enough room for me to go with a 40 mm objective..The sight does not seem to be causing any problem,so it can stay..The gun has a better,more natural feel to it now.
