Playing hookey

Well its going to be beautiful out today and the season opens oct1. My brother and I sponsored our neighbor to join our club last month. He had lost his long time hunting spot last year which resulted in a real rough public land season. My father and brother bagged deer so i gave him my deer to make sure he had some meat last year. There are 22 member in this club who lease 1200 acres. Access to 1200 acres for 150 bucks a year? Cant go wrong IMO.

Anyways. My neighbor has a very sporadic work schedule and has today off. He hasnt been up to the property yet,so decided to take the day off from work today and bring him up there and help him find a spot,and show him around, and hang up another stand for myself. Going to be a good day!

HEY! That tractor is the wrong color! But maybe im biased my father and i work on them green ones for a living!

Well my neighbor seem really excited about the property. Walked a few miles loop through the place. Located the tree I found last year (or was it the year before??) that I wanted to put a stand in, and holy crap! The amount of growth of the brush and saplings this year is UNREAL. It's been a very wet summer. All he clearing have become incredibly thick. To the point where a 40 yard shot is far . Pretty impressive. But I guess that's what happens to logging tracks and clear after about 5 years. But come the frost when the ferns droop and leaves drop,we should be in better shape. Still alot of potential spots though,just need to get back out there. Here are some pics of "far shots" without any saplings that I snagged on Saturday. Didn't think to take some pics of the thick stuff today.

Sure does! Except its a lease so cant do anything to it,wish i could! Now what you cant see is the skidder ruts and tree tops laying in them ferns. Makes for some interesting walking!

Not a very good pic, but checked the cam yesterday and got this. Did reposition the cam afterwords. This is the buck I had in my sights (bow) last year. He was at about 55-60 yards,a little further than I was comfortable shooting. We spotted him multiple times during bow,but not at all during rifle. We heard some one down the road shot a huge (body,nice rack) 8 pter so we figured they got him. But nope!old guy is still around! He is easily a 250lb deer. My hunting just motivation went from a 10/10 to a 15! There is a younger 8pt running around the same swamp too. Both bounce around mine,my brothers and father's stands. Hopefully one of us bags him this year!

I usually see a father and a son while we are hunting. And occasionally two other members ,but they hunt way back and use atvs. Other than those guys we run into maybe 1-2 other members. Rest of the guys stay on the west side of the property. My father brother and i are the only ones down in the hemlock swamp. There are a few members who only come out opening day or are in the club because it surrounds their property so they joined up. So it works out pretty well.
