What 5 Guns only forever?

I guessing its because a large gun could be made to work for EDC. A small pocket gun is pretty much worthless for everything except EDC.

I would agree about the last part and disagree with the first Large guns don't work well for EDC. Gun sales support this. I'm a little surprised at the answers being posted is all.

but we are talking about some fantasy limited to 5...
If you only had 5 guns you would make something work for EDC not just make excuses.. :)
I'd fill my needs first and worry about wants later. But that is me. My carry is a working gun. I consider it the most important gun I own because I use it every day. I believe every American should own a rifle but the reality is it doesn't get used much.

1) Makarov in standard 9x18, or commercial .380 Auto Russian.
2) Romanian.22LR M69 "Trainer".
3) Imported AK. These have higher-grade steel than certain US-made, commercial products.
4) Enfield #4 or #5 "Jungle".
5) Springfield 1903.

This is only a reverse rank by approx. order of muzzle energy or general size.
The OP did state Five guns, with no priority requested.

1) Ruger 10/22
2) Full size .45 (would be my xd right now, but havent found anything i like better yet. Mostly likely an EAA Hunter is next on my list)
3) Compact 9mm (in compact guns ive only shot a few glocks, dont like them still looking)
4) 12ga O/U (right now my Citori is my favorite platform, but i also REALLY like the Winchester 101s, tho getting parts is hard)
5) Browning Abolt 2 in 7mm remington magnum

Slight derail of the topic. However, large guns are perfectly acceptable and very workable for every day CCW. Mine is a 5" 1911. Small guns for CCW have two purposes: Convenience and concession to limiting factors that exclude larger pistols. Most people aren't actually limited by health, stature or clothing issues, but instead convince themselves it can't be done when, really, they simply can't be bothered. Convenience is the driving factor. If Americans had less disposable income, we'd see more of the larger CCW guns. But because we can (most of us) afford multiple guns and niche guns, we buy things with limited utility.

I can't speak for the rest of the country, just here in the Great Lakes region of the Midwest. Everyone around here who takes guns out of doors owns a shotgun. The vast majority also own a .22. Right behind that is service sized .38 and .357 revolvers that do night stand duty. For many hunters, shooters and gun owners in this area, anything else is a luxury. Most only have a box or two of ammunition at any given time. We here on THR are the anomalies. The niche firearms are sold to us, the multiple gun owners. We buy the mouseguns, the latest variation on something we already own three of. Average Joe is buying multi-function workhorses.

I think I agree with you 1911 Guy, and often times the smaller the collection the more the guns are used and purposeful. The guns tell more stories then guns in the back of our safes. I’ve known many people who have guns they just use and shoot, the rest is academic to them. I met a guy last year who hunts out west every year with lots of success. He shoots rattle snakes, hogs, and coyotes weekly at his ranch. Ofcourse he lives in Texas. I asked him what he shoots and he had to show me. He had a double barrel and a 30 30. He forgot what brand his 30 30 was. After I looked and told him he nodded and said it kills.

I still think asking the good people on here is interesting, because there is a lot of experience and knowledge. The 2 Guns I handle the most didn’t even make my nerdy list. But I believe my infamous 5 would serve me bestest.

Ya, this is a nightmare-scenario, regulatory-overload list in a world where we would have a 5-gun limit to what we could possibly own.

Of my chosen five, I don't own a Winchester 70 in .30-06, in fact other than the Garands I don't own a .30-06 at all...but I will admit that rifle/round combination is more versatile and universal than my .270, 6.5x55, .300 Weatherby, .308, .243, .45-70 , .30-30, .35 Remington, .223, 7.62x39, .30 Carbine, 8x57, .303 British or my pistol caliber lever guns are...

Man I hope I don't ever live in a world like that...:fire:

but we are talking about some fantasy limited to 5...
If you only had 5 guns you would make something work for EDC not just make excuses.. :) or buy something else.

If you were suddenly limited to only 5 guns, CC- EDCs might very well be a moot point, too.

1. Glock 29 (own)
2. Colt AR (own)
3. SP101 (own)
4. Wingmaster (own)
5. Some .308 rifle (do not own yet)

Reasons why.

1. I like to shoot this one believe it or not. Plus I have a few conversion barrels. .40/9x25/10mmx5". Have a bunch of short 10 round and full size 15 round mags.

2. Good, reliable, battle ready.

3. I choose this one because I enjoy shooting the little sucker.

4. Everyone needs a shotgun.

5. I'm on the hunt for a .308 with a comfortable length of pull.

I have/had better guns than all of the above. But I like to shoot and shoot the above guns very well.

The first three are easy. From my post on the "Essentials" thread:
Looking at NIGHTLORD40K's typology, I'm a hunter. Here's my list:
  1. 12 gauge pump action with multiple barrels. Mine is a Mossberg 500 with a 26-inch vent rib barrel with removable chokes, a 24-inch rifled slug barrel with cantilever scope mount sporting a Leupold M8 4X, and an 18.5-inch cylinder barrel with rifle sights. Best all-purpose hunting/sporting/defense gun there is, IMHO.
  2. Bolt action rifle in an intermediate cartridge--anything built on the .308 case (.308, 7mm-08, .260, .243). My go-to hunting rifle for many years has been a Remington Model 7 in .308 with a Leupold Vari-X II 2-7X compact mounted in the conventional position. If I were starting over, I might opt for a .260 Rem instead of the .308, but I'm not parting with the .308 any time soon.
  3. 4-inch .357 magnum revolver ... or possibly .44 magnum if one reloads. Mine is a stainless Ruger GP100. With reloads across the full spectrum from mouse fart plinkers to full-house hunting loads, the .357 (or .44) is a great all-purpose handgun.
I could be content having to "do it all" with three guns, but would rather add a few more, including a .22 rifle and a .22 handgun. But I'd give up the .22s before giving up one of my "big three."
With two more to add, I'd probably go with ...
  • 22 Rifle. Mine would be a bolt action CZ 452 American with threaded barrel with a can. I like .22s a lot, and a suppressed bolt action is about as quiet as one can get. Cat's meow for squirrels.
  • Another bolt action rifle. I might trade in the .308 listed under #2 for a 7mm Rem Magnum for a bit more power, and add a .243 Winchester to cover the bottom of the center fire range. There are fancier 6mm cartridges, but the .243 is pretty widely available, and there are lots of 6mm bullets to keep a reloader happy.
As I get nearer to retirement, I just don't see enjoying a battle rifle as much. Three bolt action rifles in .22LR, .243 Win, and 7mm Rem Mag would cover my wants/needs nicely; add the shotgun and revolver and I'd be set.

Lets try 1. Big Horn mdl90 460s&w
2.Mossberg with 2 barrels
3.Henry 22 carbine
4.30/06 with scope
5.Coonan Clasic 357 I could live with just the five listed. Hunting/plinking/dangerus large things/home defense and carry/short midrange and long shots its all covered
I had to sell a few to buy the 460.I have revolvers in 45/45acp and 454casull a 17hmr and couple more shotguns
22’s and rifles. But the 5 listed would cover every thing needed. This was a good Post it made me think of a reason for each
gun and why I must keep these 5.Thanks

Ruger MK II 22 lr
Glock 21 45acp
CZ 452 Trainer
Remington 700 in .308 Win
Colt Lightweight Sporter AR

Covers all the needs and most of the wants. I'm a lousy wing shot so, no shotgun. It would just be wasted ammo.

Revolver in 38 SPL - take your pick ...
S&W 63 in stainless in .22LR
Marlin lever in 30/30 w 4x scope
Savage 99 in 308 w 6x scope
Mossberg pump in 12 ga

All the others are #6 through infinity :D

I’m not sure. Let’s see:

Oops, I forgot the rifles.

Are you sure I can’t have more than 5.

1. Colt 1911 38 Super
2. Ruger Super Blackhawk 44 mag
3. Benelli M2 12ga.
4. Ruger 77 .270 Win
5. Ruger Single Six 9.5 inch barrel .22/.22mag cylinders

This is a fun one I like to challenge my shooting buddies with from time to time.

My personal preferences (biased by what i have, reload for and have shot enough i'm comfortable and within my abilities with...)

Ruger No. 1 in .30-06
Ruger Mini-14 in .223
Mossberg 500 in 12 gauge (i have the field, HD and slug combo)
Springfield 1911A1 (i had turned mine into a sort of Range Officer clone before SA came out with them)
Ruger Standard in .22 LR (older model, but i've had it forever.)

If i could add one more, it would be a Ruger Blackhawk in .44 Magnum or .45 Colt...

Glock 19 w .22 Conversion kit
HK 416A5
M1A scout squad or M14 EBR either one will do
TT-33 / M57
PPSH-41

Plenty of rounds for all, However 5 is not enough, I do need a bolt, preferably a Sako .338 Lapua , I had a Sako .338 Winchester magnum as a young man and miss that rifle.

1. Colt SAA .45 Colt. Last gun I’d ever sell, wouldn’t hesitate to use it to defend myself. They’ve been killing people that needed killing since 1873.
2. NHC T4 Lightweight 9mm. My most comfortable pistol to carry, and the one I shoot the best.
3. Sig 229 Legion. Gotta have a double stack with a rail on the list.
4. Zenith Z5 RS 9mm. Basically, the original style MP5 type pistol.
5. LMT AR15, with additional barrels in ,300 BLK, possibly 6.8 SPC and .224 Valkyrie when it’s available.

Nos. 3-5 can be suppressed.

If I could add one more, S&W 686+ 3”:
