When do you have "enough" ammo?

Enough to maintain proficiency and a reduced amount of recreation for 5 years is a start, but I hope everyone strives to leave their kids plenty of ammo to shoot!

In regards to medical prescriptions, if I was reliant on certain prescriptions I would try if possible to hold back taking pills here and there to create a supply to buy some time in a disaster case. I know all of this is dependent on what type of prescription, but if this is possible the time to start is now as it would take a long time to build up an adequate supply by skipping a pill (or half a pill) here or there, all the while using the old stock first.

This is a gun forum so let me put it in ammunition terms, you have a box of 50 of .357 mag to shoot today, after loading your 6 shot revolver 8 times you have 2 cartridges left in the box, your friend ("the Doctor") says you can't leave those two in the box, they need to be shot. I say save those two for a rainy day.

I have a large supply of ammo because I'm afraid there will come a point where I either cannot purchase it anymore, or the price will become extremely high.
My thoughts are that if I even needed more than a full magazine in my AK to defend my home, I'm probably toast, and in a SHTF scenario, one can only carry so much ammo. For me that would be a few hounded rounds of 22LR and a couple mags of 9mm.

As far as protecting my home goes, I have five 30 round magazines of 7.62x39 and three 25 round magazines of 22LR ready to rock with an AK and a suppressed Scoped 10-22. Like I said, a situation that actually required 150 rounds from rifle probably isn't going to end well anyways. I hoard ammo because I fear there could be a time when it is either no longer available or too expensive to shoot for fun.

The days of going to Walmart and buying 40 rounds of Russian 7.62x39 for $9 aren't going to last forever. Had Obama had a Blue house and senate, they would have pumped the breaks on it already. I see cheap import ammo like Wolf, Tula, perfecta, prvi partizan etc........going by-by the first time the Dems are able to align the stars all blue. All one has to do is look at the demographics at most k-12 schools in most metro areas, and it becomes clear that we will have a one party system much like California already does in 20 years. The seeds have already been planted, and that is that.

Sorry I didn't come back to this thread sooner! You folks have certainly helped me decide how much ammo I need to have on hand. Right on about a standoff. Now I'm thinking maybe my supply is sufficient for my needs, certainly enough for a "standoff". Should be thinking more about what I need to maintain a supply of practice ammo.
Thanks so much! I knew you folks could help me get my mind right!

I just counted my supply of ammo and the totals seem sufficient to me. 4400 rounds of .223, 1600 rds 9mm.. Mostly plinking ammo, IE, FMJ. I am mostly a rifle shooter, don't care much for pistols (Quigley Down Under?). What does the hive mind consider to be a good supply of HP ammo to have on hand? I'm thinking 200 to 300 rounds of each. Kind of bragging on on my stash of ammo.but, am genuinely concerned as to what is a sufficient supply of each. Not peparing for war nut, would like to have a sufficient supply for a standoff.
I have maintained a good supply on hand because of the shortages that have occurred over in the last 10 years or so. I was caught once pretty low in supply, and it has not happened again. I'm not particularly concerned about a "stand off" or any kind of "military action". The dominant ammo I maintain a supply of is 22LR and have a sufficient amount on hand for the rest of my life as long as I'm not real picky on the brand. Could use some more higher grade target ammo.

On center fire, I keep about a year's supply on hand of every caliber that I shoot.

I like to have five magazines for each of my pistols, three loaded with hollow points the rest with ball. Because if you have made three mag changes in a fight, your not hitting what your shooting at or there’s to many bad guys.
I keep 200 to 300 rounds of hollow point ammo on hand in each caliber. I keep a good bit of practice ammo on hand, but I also keep good quality FMJ on hand too.
I also handload.

I may have gone off the deep end....was always concerned that future ammo might be used as a revenue stream for money hungry politicians looking to tax per round. Can't tell you how much rimfire I've got or some would accuse me of being responsible for the 4+ years of empty shelves.

You have more then 30,000 rounds?

I have almost three full USGI SAW ammo boxes full of loose .22 LR plated ammo. Two of Federal and one Winchester. Not bothering to count it though! I do not have a huge amount of centerfire loaded--say 500 rounds of most loadings I shoot but have between 7-10 years worth of components/lead /molds put back to keep me shooting at present levels. I will curtail my shooting when supplies drop below 3 years normal usage without the ability to restock. FWIW buying ahead is a great hedge against rising costs in the future.

A co-worker of mine, several years ago (and I have been retired 6 years now), and whenever lamenting the political situation, was fond of saying "We don't have enough ammo". I tend to agree with him.

I never kept any stocked till the past few months when LGs had of 9mm and 38 special on sale. The owner may have bought out the now closed Gander Mountain nearby .I have 800 rds 9mm , 200 .38spl and couple bricks .22lr so far. 150 -200 rounds to shoot every week or two is enough for me.

whenever lamenting the political situation,
that right there is what I consider a good reason to have a bit stashed away, If I understand correct those poor folks in california will now need a ffl, background check and fingerprints to buy ammo as of the 1st of the year with addendum's to add reloading components to the list soon.
I do not live in that state but we are all just one election away from an all out assault on our rights and a huge legal fight to keep the free states free IMHO

The original question was this:
What does the hive mind consider to be a good supply of HP ammo to have on hand? I'm thinking 200 to 300 rounds of each.
I think 200-300 is pretty good for a HP supply. Every so often, I want to be able to shoot off what's in my gun & spare mag and will need enough to replace. Obviously, my gun and spare mag don't hold 200+ rounds, but I don't want to have to run buy more ammo every time I shoot off what's in the gun.

You're not even close....
It’s America. We are free to spend our money on whatever we want. When the ammo shortage hit, I had just over 30,000 rounds of 22LR. I helped out a lot of friends when the price got up to $80 & $90 for a five hundred bulk pack. I sold them bulk packs for $30 & $40, and even gave some away. I’m back up to 10,000 rounds but need to buy more.

"enough" is a variable number for me, depending mostly on the direction of the political winds. Right now mine are blowing in a foul direction, so I've been stocking up to keep supply here for an estimated time frame. I'm making plans for alternate procurement but I shouldn't need to use them for a number of a years.

I try to keep at least 200/300 rounds for each caliber I shoot with the exception of .22 lr. & .223. Those I don't drop below 1,000 rds. I also reload, I keep components (brass, powder, bullets , and primers) to load 1,000s of each that I shoot.

After having been caught flat-footed by the 2008/9 panic, I now keep at least 1,000 rounds of reserve for each caliber I shoot, and my practice ammo quantities are above and beyond that.

I'm not big on hollow-points, I've probably got less than a 20mm can of that stuff for all of my pistol calibers altogether.
Soft-points, hard-cast, ball, slugs, buck - that's another story.
If you're counting it by the round, you're doing it wrong.

I have about the same now as I did before and during the craziness. Around 5K to 10K .22 LR, 1K to 2K of 9MM, .38 Spl, .45 ACP, .223, and less of a lot more calibers.

Oh, and about 200 12 Gauge buckshot and 100 slugs, plus various light stuff.
