It appears as if Lyman is changing their press line up and naming it Brass Smith

I've been reloading since about 1975 or so. I have two presses, a Lee Classic Turret, and a Pacific single stage. Don't see the need for anything new at this stage of the game.

Have a blessed day,

Leon

Their manuals are good for any reloader no matter how long you've been loading. No matter how much you think you know once in a while you find something new you didn't know about.
No disagreement here on that. But 2 sets of 4-die or 4 sets of 2-die. I can see me getting something screwed up there.

A surprising fact: According to Midway's site, it will be cheaper than the TMag, that they already have.
Midway says $199 when they get them in stock.

I can see using it for rifle loading. You could have 4 calibers set up on one turret (assuming you don't crimp rifle stuff).

LOL! Eight stations! It's like the razor blade arms race again!

Their own marketing material pitches it as useful for holding 2 4-die sets or 4 2-die sets! While nobody can fault their grade school arithmetic, I'm amused as heck at the notion that what the market really wants is to leave two completely different sets of dies for two completely different calibers on the press at the same time. What could go wrong????

As if locking rings that hold a setting don't exist... jeez.

I can see paying a premium for a really high quality press. That said, I don’t see gimmicks as adding quality and/or value.

It seems there isn’t a good reason to have multiple dies on the press and reasons it’s a problem. That makes me see this press as not only expensive but potentially dangerous. Worse, targeting it at new loaders who may not know better seems irresponsible.

I have two turret presses set up for multiple calibers. It's convenient for calibers I reload frequently. The Lyman TMag is set up for .38-40 and .44-40.The RCBS turret is set up for .45 ACP and 10MM.Nothing will go wrong if you pay attention to what you're doing.

When you are reloading you are supposed to pay attention. I think when you get to the bullet seating station you should be able to figure out you got something wrong.

True but it’s when you lose focus thats when accidents happen.

And we’re all human and all sorts of distractions can hit us. Thankfully most of us are wise enough to stop, and recheck things but I just don’t see a beginner needing any extra complexity to add to the risk of making mistakes.

Maybe the risk is insanely minimal but I’m not convinced it’s a good beginner setup.

I agree a beginner should only be using a single stage press. Turret presses should only be use by experienced and careful reloaders

Lol. I’m not sure if I fully agree with that either. After loading a few loads on my Lee hand press I got a Lee Classic Turret. I used it like a single stage, but had the Dies in and moved them manually when I was done doing a batch process. I also liked that I didn’t have to reset everything when changing calibers. I just popped out the Turret and put another one in with the right dies.

So I don’t see the press as the problem as much as seeing the multiple die sets on the Lyman as a possible problem. Now maybe I’m missing something.

With all of that said, I do generally feel that a single stage is best to start with. And I don’t see it as a wasted expense as there’s always something they can be used for!

I guess what really matters is that we all are as safe as possible. We all pick our acceptable level of risk and as long as we’re safe at the end of the day that’s what matters most.

I can't for the life of me figure out what you would do with 8 stations, but if someone wants to buy it, have at it.

I agree with you.

I think the "station inflation" may be aimed more at neighborhood oneupsmanship than anything truly practical.

- "I've got a four station press."
-- "That's nothing, I've got a five station press."
--- "Despair and die all of you wimps, I just bought a press with eight stations. I rule!"

But... But... But... I've got more holes in my press than you do. How can you call that a gimmick?

Yeah, I know I only have four dies to go into those holes, but I've still got more holes for when I need them.

Are they going to change the color they paint them? After all, if the old "Orange Crusher" is going to now become the "Brass Smith" won't orange be kind of awkward?

But are those holes bigger?

We all know bigger is better

Understandable; you can install and set 4 different rifle die sets (this would be OK for me because I reload for two rifle calibers (30-06 and 308) about 5 times more than some of my other rifle calibers). Also I could install 2, three die sets and two ram prime units for a couple handgun calibers (45 ACP and 9mm). This would cover two of my most used/reloaded calibers and easy priming. If this ain't enough I could get another turret (I had 10 turrets with dies installed for my Lee Turret press)..

Don't know. I just was letting everyone know that I saw they had a new line coming out. I have no idea as to their plans.:)

Looks like you and I are the only 2 who see any practical use for it.
I would totally buy one.
Like you said, a lot of people keep extra turret heads with dies that stay in them all the time. This gives the option of having them set up without changing the head.
I don't see why it's silly.
