Ruger's decison to chamber their American Ranch in 7.62x39 - especially using mini-mags - was very timely. Howa's mini-action 7.62x39 rifle is another that I'm sure will make it's owner grin every day at the range, or in the woods.

Every time I take a group of friends to the gun range, my Savage 10 in 7.62x39 is without a doubt the most passed-around, enjoyed rifle we all shoot. With sub-MOA, $5.99/box ammo, nobody feels bad about emptying a magazine or two (or three). And with downrange energy that equals or surpasses the (dare I say) venerable 30-30, nobody should feel undergunned in the deer woods with a 7.62x39 anymore.

These are good days for gun owners.

Loving the RAR in 7.62x39. All I have shot in it so far is cheap ammo and you can't tell that by looking at the targets. Just the right amount of recoil, short and handy, Nikon 3x9x40 (overkill I know) mounted on it and its still very handy. Its the first rifle I grab when I want to go shoot for fun and will be tried next deer season as a working gun.

Hopefully we see other manufacturers see how popular this is becoming and have several more options.

...ya know untill they came out with the ar maged RAR...i wanted 1 of x39 RARS to rebarrel and open the bolt face (or get a .473 face bolt) for a high pressure .458Socom...now i want one of the Ar mag guns for that.

Ill eventually get a Howa Mini in x39 tho i think, as well as one in 6.5 Grendel.

I checked out a CZ527 in 7,62x39 the other day, and was impressed enough I think I might save for one. Has a scope rig too, nice 4 power Leupold and detachable/rezero. Shot the irons too, and was impressed.

It could use an inch or so off the buttstock because I often wear heavy clothes, though.

Nice thing bout the 527s is the wood stocks pretty easy to shorten.

+1 on the cz 527, I love mine with the irons... But the Ruger is on my list too. Gonna put a 4x scope on it for my jeep gun.

when hand loaded my rem 788 will shoot the 160gr ftx at 2500 fps, and its not that I don,t have 7.62x39,s, I even have a model 7 in 300bk. but give me a rem model 7 in 308. eastbank.

Very nice rifles but those pictures don't really give a fair representation of the comparison. My 7.62x39 bolt action is a 16" barrel and is much lighter and handier than my SKS. If this thread is still open come Thursday when I fly back home, I will post a picture of my RAR next to my sks.

I have had a CZ527 in 7.62x39 for many years. Has given me plenty of top rate service. Light weight, accurate, excellent stock, and top notch trigger.

I've been looking at the RAR in 7.62x39 since it was announced. It seems to be tailored to my "needs". I don't hunt, but I would like to add a more "traditional" action rifle to my safe. A 30-30 lever gun is tempting as I have had one in the past (as is a big ol' thumping .45-70 I have lusted after for over a decade), but since this will be for short distance plinking, it's kind of silly to put up with the cost and recoil when all you are doing is killing paper well within the shorter ranged capabilities of any long arm.

I find .22 a bit underwhelming. A .22 magnum lever gun would be fun, but still kind of spendy for a plinking rimfire.

A quality bolt gun that is handy and can shoot $5 a box ammo at tree stumps sounds like a good deal. I'd love for it to have come with some irons on it, but I have a cheap piece of good-enough glass around here somewhere that I would be OK knocking around in the trunk of the car. Kinda makes a good point of offering a very attractive back up/bug out long arm to toss in the car. Light, handy, cost effective to stock up for/feed, powerful enough, doesn't raise eyebrows.

this model 7 rem aac in 300bk with 16 " barrel is 36" long and shoot a 125gr bullet at 2250fps with 18grs H-110 and more with little-gun. and a rem model 7 in 308 is available with a 16" barrel. I may rebarrel my mod 7 300bk in the future as I have a new rem 308 barrel and a new bolt with a 308 face. and the 308 will shoot a 125-130gr bullet at 2500 fps with 35.7 grs of H332 with ease and much more if wanted. eastbank.

A bit off topic, but, Fiv3r, if you reload, the 45-70 is both cheap to shoot and can be loaded with cat sneeze level loads. I too only shoot at the range (no hunting) and have a Marlin 1895 that is a hoot to shoot at paper and steel with (out to 200 yds at my local range). I reload a 300 gr. RNFP's at around 1,200 fps and can shoot those all day long. Also attracts quite a crowd when i pull out the box of reloads and folks come up and ask "what's that?". With factory loads, you're correct in that they're expensive and pack too much of a punch for range use.

And now, back to our regular programming...

My buddy owns a CZ 527 and has gotten pretty close to sub MOA with the cheap steal cased stuff, but he says his groups are usually around 2-3 inches.

Not all AK's are super inaccurate at range either. My Century arms AK with a milled receiver, chrome lined barrel, and a quality ghost ring site is just as accurate a 100 yards as an AR with open sites at 100 yards for most people that have shot it. At 150 yards I can consistently hammer a 14" steel plate with open sites all day. I can't do that with an import AK, well at least not consistently. A lot of it is just having a better sight on it.

My perspective has really started to shift on shooting and reloading recently. It all started with buying a Mosin Nagant. I wasn't going to spend the money getting dies and reload able brass and .311 bullets for that so I just bought some steel case ammo to shoot, which was the first box of factory ammo I've bought in a long time. I really really love shooting that Mosin and just being able to pick up $12 a box ammo that is very accurate is great. I really like throwing the brass in the weeds and not having to worry about picking it up or spending 20 minutes to hand load to spend 10 minutes shooting. After that I picked up a box of hornady steel match for my AR which shot great, was comparably priced to handloading, and I didn't have to do anything. I used to shoot so I could reload but now I reload so I can shoot so having an accurate rifle to shoot $5 a box ammo is really apealing right now.

I too, have jumped on this bandwagon. After seeing Hickok45’s video, I knew I had to have a RAR in 7.62x39.
I put a Primary Arms ACSS 1-6x24 on it and dropped in the timney trigger ( doohickey on the original bugged me). Nice upgrade.
Bought some mini-30 mags and some .20 cent a round ammo, and shoot it guilt free all day long.
