Probably beating a dead horse here as I'm sure this has been discussed over and over.... But...
Wife is finally thinking CCW. She's a competent shooter with her .45 1911.
She doesn't like small guns, didn't have good luck with a snub .38 this weekend.
She's starting her CCW search with a blank slate, revolver/auto, caliber, carry method.
We'd like to compile a list of at least half dozen hand guns to find and rent at local ranges. What are your suggestions?

Thank you for the recommendation cokeman, we'll start the list with the M&P shield.

DP- she shoots the large heavy frame 1911 well. She doesn't like my Kahr CW9 because its smaller and hard for her to grip . The light weight of many carry guns leading to increased muzzle flip/felt recoil is another issue for her.

She wants a list of suspects to bring to the counter, in an effort to avoid the common "... this one comes in pink" attitude many guys have when dealing with women shooters.

Man or woman, everyone has different expectations and requirements for their carry piece. The sheild is a great gun but for me it is too big for an EDC. For me a Kahr CM9 and Ruger LCP fit my requirements quite well. I now carry my LCP places I used to not carry anything.

Shooting as many different carry pieces as possible is one way to start... unfortunately for many people this means doing a lot of buying and selling. To me finding a gun that I like / am good at shooting is second to a gun I like carrying. I shoot my .45 XDS better than I shoot my LCP but my LCP is on me in many places my XDS wouldn't be. My 1911's are second nature to me but I have never carried one on my person. The CM9 is a nice middle between XDS and LCP for me. A gun I can shoot the tail off a rat at 25 yards while blindfolded is usueless if it is at home in the gun safe when I need it!

Does she feel comfortable with a .380 for a carry piece or does she prefer a caliber with more power?

A Sig P938 seems like a natural must try for a 1911 shooter. Same with a Colt Mustang if .380's are being consitered? The Colt 380 gevernment is the older big brother to the Mustang, it is second only to my 1911's as far as feel in my hand and shootability. One of the little glocks or XDS's might also be a good choice. Go to the gun stores and identify the guns she will carry in her purse, on her person or what ever her prefered carry technique is then evaluate the ones that feel best tin her hands. To me the Ruger LC9 is a nice size break between bigger than I would carry and something I have on me every day. Maybe sart with the LC9 and have her slip it into her purse. If she likes it start looking at slightly bigger compacts... if not then she will need to start looking smaller.

I wonder if identifying how she will carry should be the first step. If carrying in a purse then finding a carry purse might be the second step. Then find the guns that will fit comfortabley in her carry purse. Then select the gun she is most comfortable with / proficient with from the guns that will fit in her carry purse. This seems like it might be more productive than spending a bunch of time, effort and money finding the gun that will stay home in the gun safe that she likes the best and is most proficient with????

I believe American Rifleman did a project they documented in an issue a few months ago. They got a bunch of women together with a bunch of guns and after training had them shoot all the guns. If I remember correctly the Sig 938 was the most liked gun

my wife carries a sig p238 (.380) or a kimber cdp (9mm), the Sig 938 is about the same size as the CDP and she looked at it but liked the trigger on the kimber a little better. All 3 are 1911 style in a smaller package if she is comfortable with cocked and locked. If not, then there are the glocks, the shield, I carry the LCP (pocket carry DAO) , P238 or the lc9s on a hip. The lc9s is striker fired instead of single action - a happy medium between SAO and DAO.

The 32 caliber revolver makes for a good cc gun. Use 32 H&R cartridges in a Ruger LCR 327 or Charter Arms Undercoverette.
Grips on revolvers can be changed to find one that fits best.

I ain't afraid to admit I like the Undercoverette, especially the older ones. I own three Undercovers, dated 1966, 1985 (stainless), and 1987. I handled a vintage "vette" a couple of years back. Wish I'd bought it.

Some people hate the gun Im gonna throw out there but it's actually one of my favorites. Beretta 9000 if you can find one. It's discontinued but still out there. DA/SA but can be carried cocked and locked like 1911. It's either hated or loved. Complaints are the slide is hard to rack due to height and the grip is to big for subcompact. Neither are an issue for me and sounds like your wife might like the fuller grip.

Unless it's too small for her, the M&P Shield in 45 cal. might be something to try at the range. I've got it in 9mm and find it easy to conceal.

How does she plan to carry it? That will have some bearing as well. A few to look at are a Springfield Range Officer in 9, Glock 19, Ruger SR-9 or SR-9C, Canik TP9xxx, Springfield XD.

Obviously I’m biased towards 9mm, but she will have to determine what gun feels good in her hand and which caliber she can comfortably shoot. What I tell every lady is to handle as many different guns as possible to see what feels good then try out the top 5 if at all possible.

Milemaker13, would you mind defining "small" guns? Size-wise, there's a whole bunch of guns between a full sized 1911 and a 38 snubby.
I'm not trying to start some kind of definition argument here, I'm just trying to understand before I make recommendations.
My own wife loves her Sig P239, which I think is called a "compact" handgun. Yet due to my wife's small stature, it's difficult for her to conceal her P239. So her everyday carry gun is a Glock 42, which I believe is called a "sub-compact" handgun.
I too carry a "sub-compact" handgun (either a M&P Shield 9mm or a 38 snubby) because "sub-compact" handguns are lighter and easier to conceal than the full-sized 1911 I have by the bed. But when something "goes bump in the night," even if we're not in bed, that 1911 45ACP is the gun I grab.:)

My opinion is to start with a focus on what carry method she'd prefer, and from there, what size gun she can comfortably carry and shoot, with that carry method.

Whatever she shoots well and is practical for her to carry. That includes mouse guns in "inadequate" calibers. I second the suggestion that she try as many rental guns as possible before making a decision. Small guns are easier to shoot if the grip is long enough for all three fingers. For example, Kahr's P380 and CW380 are two-finger guns with the 6-round, flush magazine but three-finger with the 7-round magazine with grip extension. Their CT380 has room for three fingers. The one thing I would firmly discourage is off body carry.

There's a series of pretty decent opinions on here, so I won't echo them.
Fact of the matter, if you CC long enough, you start to get a gun collection for a reason. There are a lot of different values that people have in general that dictate the type of pistol and the methods in which they carry. That being said, women have the short end of the stick I would say. It's a hard market that doesn't really satisfy women todays standard of dressing, with all the leggings and skin tight clothing etc. However that is really indicative to how they "normally dress" and body type. Much like a male but sometimes to a greater degree.
I'll use my wife in this example. She is petite, about 99lbs with low body fat....which usually means smaller breast. She loves all those stupid yoga pants and in the summer she is wearing these daisy dukes. Its absolutely hard to for her to carry a pistol in a appendix carry and keep the same style of dressing. She has all type of holsters and methods of concealing. She knows the has a better tactical advantage against potential threats with an appendix carry but, its rarely viable depending on how she's dressing and the time of year. Even wearing what women refer to as "flowy" blouses, although looser, due to her low body fat, still goes flat to her stomach area and will show the printing of a gun, and a bra holster is pretty much out of the question. So back strapping is one of her primary methods. Thankfully she knows purse carry is out of the question unless its a super last resort.
The other issue is I created a little monster and she only carries CC guns in .45 acp. There really is a limited amount of super small .45s on the market that really fit to her body. Notice that I didn't say fit her hand or anything like that. She has reached a level of proficiency where she can train herself to use most non magnum pistols effectively, its a matter of concealment size for her.
Over all, there's quite a few factors in the wind here to consider, and although you are looking into an entry level experience for her, I personally feel there will be some plug and play for different ways and reasons in regards to concealed carry depending how far down the rabbit hole she decided to go with it. I'm always looking into the market to see how much progression womens specific CCW gear and weapons come out, its been a slow up hill movement in that regard. Some of the better products that she has tested out an has used as been dean adams and can-can. However when we go hunting, she just open carries a fullsize 1911 in a safariland holster.
