where do you find IDPA/3 gun shoots?

is there a special website or something that shows your states IDPA and 3 gun shoots? Id really like to start competing but cant seem to find anything.
 
Practiscore is good as mentioned but may only give you a weeks notice. Around here there are several websites that list competitions sometimes months in advance, one I use is called "Mid Atlantic Shooting Sports". The information is not gospel but generally accurate. I would imagine there is such a thing in your area. To give you an idea I have my 2018 calendar filled right now with 30 events that I'm going to shoot. The problem is not finding an event, it's trying to decide between 2 or 3 on the same day. I already have shot in 3 matches in 2018 and two that I was going to shoot were cancelled due to weather.

There are also several facebooks for this area so I would assume there are some in your area as well. Also try the IDPA website, 3 gun nation, USPSA, Steel Challenge, brianenos.com, google search any of the above for forums and also try facebook search for IDPA, 3 gun and so forth.

My guess is that once you get started you will find a ton of matches.
 
As a side note on 3-gun. No one ever accuses me of being shy when it comes to purchasing competition quality gear. But one discipline I have avoided in spite of tremendous pressure is 3-gun. I have everything I need for pistol, have a good belt and an AR-15 but would need a scope, the only shotgun I have is a pump so the cost even to do a bare-bones get my foot in the door without having to borrow stuff would be somewhere in the neighborhood of a grand. I don't want to spend anything on that right now as I have enough opportunities to shoot as it is.

I recently was invited to shoot a beginner 2-gun match where I would have been able to use my AR-style rimfire and my Glock 17 the only thing I would have had to scrounge up would have been mag pouches for the rifle if I didn't want to just stick them in my pocket. But on lengthy consideration I decided to continue to stay as far away from 3-gun as possible for the time being as I really don't have the time or money.

Just stick an extra mag in your pocket. I've never used more than 2 rifle mags. You don't need pouches.
 
My strategy, (new to it as of this year) has been to locate gun ranges, then visit their site. it is not efficient, but then again, once a month or so is all i can get away with. Range report to follow from today's shoot

Thanks just a hair too far for me. I'm 25min west of Cleveland but thank you for the info.
 
LOL I'm laughing at myself. I'm going to take a pass on an IDPA match tomorrow (Sunday) mainly because it is rainy and we have a few inches of snow on the ground so it's going to be gooey mess outside. On Tuesday evening I'm shooting an IDPA classifier and next Sunday a Steel Challenge match. And this is the winter "off" season.

If it hasn't already been said you may want to expand further than IDPA. It isn't really true that you need a race gun for USPSA. There might be IDPA similar local matches where they shoot a cof that is like IDPA but the club hosting is not affiliated with IDPA. IDPA is actually my least favorite sanctioning body because I want to have fun shooting not try to comply with 100 +/- nit picky rules. I really think that either steel challenge or rimfire challenge is probably the least expensive least complex but fun competition to enter.

No problem. It's worth the drive though, especially the USPSA matches. I knew guys that drove from Elyria and even Erie PA for the matches. I use to drive to Erie for matches too though.

We get shooters from Erie at my club's bigger matches (Ontelaunee which is 20 miles north of Allentown PA). I'm in a league that meets at ranges that are 2+ hours drive each way. Nothing is ever easy or convenient.
 
I have more success tracking down all the clubs within a certain radius and searching their websites for events and calendars than I do with discipline specific searches.

But I'd also check out Practiscore and Facebook.

For what it's worth I put a Nordic 7 round extension on my 1970's 870 Wingmaster for a total of 12 rounds.
Between the tube kit and barrel clamp needed for an 870 it was about a hunnert' and ten dollah'.

You don't need a bunch of fancy gear to have a really good time.

I shot a basic AR and a pump for about a year before I purchased another AR and a semi shotgun.

I don't use a fancy belt and pants pockets are plenty for carrying AR mags.

Shotshell caddies are pretty much the only thing you would need and I was borrowing them for months.
