I avoided .40 for the longest time, and then once it started dying out I got a deal on a Steyr m40. I love that gun, and since that I had to start reloading for .40 anyway the barrier was broken. Then I picked up a g27, a couple g22s (my carry g22 is the one picture), a g35, and several polymer 80 frames that I built into .40s. My gun shop jokes that if they hand me a .40, i will buy it.
To me the caliber is the perfect size, right amount of recoil, and easy to load. Meanwhile every gun I have in .40 is wonderfully accurate and fun to shoot, with more than enough power and capacity to get the job done. And it doesn't hurt that no one is buying .40 pistols anymore so they are selling for very nice prices.

So how does the Steyr 40 compare to the Glock 22? I'm kinda lookin' at one myself.

M1key, the Steyr is very nice. The trapezoid sights are strange, but I can tell that if I used them consistently they would be great. It has been very reliable (except for one very odd malfunction that has never repeated itself) and it carries and handles like a dream. But overall I prefer the Glocks. I actually almost sold the Steyr a few months back during a downsizing fit, but I decided to shoot through the loaded mags I had and after reminding myself of how nice it is I just couldn't sell it.
Edit: realized I didn't really elaborate why I prefer the Glocks. Although I love the Steyr, the sights being different from every other gun I carry makes it a less attractive gun for carry. Also I have Glocks in every size that allows some standardization of mags, holsters, etc. They all wear the same sights, all hit to about the same POA, and all work flawlessly with my handloads. If you are just comparing the Steyr and the G22 as individual guns though, I might take the Steyr.

I had an FNS-40c that I had no faults with. I have kinda switched to 9mm again, but it was a comfortable to shoot and carry little pistol.

Id probably buy another if a deal landed in my lap.

I don't carry them, but I have an RIA double-stack 1911 40 caliber, an EAA Witness polymer, a Beretta 96, a Beretta PX4, and a Glock 22. The last three are police turn-ins that averaged barely over $200 apiece. They are all good shooters. I like them. The 40 caliber hate always baffles me.

at the moment, my only 40 is a glock 22. until last year it was my winter carry gun and my preferred piece for IDPA. i have, in the past, also owned a glock 27 and a ruger sr40c. the 27 got traded for the sr40c, and the sr40c got traded off for a glock 19. its a great caliber, but 9mm fills all my needs and does it just a little cheaper.

SIG 229 is all I have. Not likely to get more, but if I got a good deal on two mentioned already in this thread, the FNS40 or XD40 in compact size I might go for one.

All I have is a gen 2 G23 with trijicon sights. Its a truck/"woods" gun. Don't really carry it unless I'm somewhere wild piggies hang out. Looks like every other gen 2 G23.

I have an XD-40 & a Ruger P94 in .40. I have been wanting a P-229 though I don't know if I will get one or not. While I have never owned one I like the G-23. I have been thinking about getting another .40. Time will tell whether I do or not though.

Caspian High Cap for USPSA Limited.
STI (actually a Limited 10 80% receiver) for USPSA Limited.
Kimber Custom II I converted to .40S&W for, you guessed it, USPSA. SIngle Stack though, not Limited.

Sold off a G35, never shot it.

I now have a couple 40's that I purchased in the middle of the great ammo drought (2012 ish). I never needed a 40 as I had 9MM and 45 ACP and thought it an inbetween caliber. But I observed that was the last hand gun ammo to leave the store shelves so I got a couple of inexpensive pistols. Funny thing is I reload already and had about 10K empty brass and a set of 40/10MM Lee dies I got in an auction. A Hipoint and a S&W SD40E and now I am set for another option if needed.

Have only owned one: recently bought a used .40 Sig P229.

A second .40? Possibly an HK USP Compact, but haven't yet tried one.
A neighbor's .40 USP Compact has The Heaviest DA trigger I've tried on any handgun-much heavier than friends' Polish P-64 9x18.

IMG_9217.JPG IMG_9221.JPG Hey, I'm new to this site and have been enjoying the blogs very much. I picked up a Walther PPQ M1 back in 2012 and I absolutely love it. Had it Cerikoted in blue titanium and swapped the factory sights out for a set of Meprolite TRU DOT's. It's my EDC nine months out of the year, in the cooler/colder months when I'm wearing clothing that can easily conceal it. Incredibly accurate and dependable pistol! I've put upwards of 3,500 rounds through it without a single malfunction.

I love the round and am sick of the haters as well. But are people funny.

.40S&W is my favorite pistol round. Don't have a lot of them and they are all Glocks: G27 gen4, G23 gen3 x2, G22 gen2. Also have 9mm conversion barrel and a AA Conversion unit for .22LR. I actually shoot best with the G27 because of the large grip panel. Kind of want to get a gen4 G23 or G22 for the better fit to my hand even though I don't need another pistol.

I have some 9mm and .45ACP pistols and a hankering for a G20 10mm. But the .40 will always be my main carry and home defense pistol. The only revolver I truly enjoy is the 4" M29 .44 mag. I do like not having to pick up brass with a revolver, so I could see getting into a k-frame size revolver if they came in a .40S&W equivalent.

Currently I don't have a .40 but as others have noted during the last ammo shortage there was always plenty of .40 ammo on the shelves. So I'm thinking maybe I should pick one up as I still have some ammo left over from the three other .40 pistols I had years ago.

if you want an equivalent revolver power wise to a hot 40 in a k frame size pistol the answer is very simple a 686+ or GP100 with a 3" barrel, load it with Speer 158 gr Gold Dots factory rated at 1250fps and you are in the same power envelope as a 165 grain 40 out of the G23, the 158 GD out of a K-L frame size pistol is very mild shooting
the thing to remember is with these pistols it's not the caliber, it the round you load it with .
mild;
357 Magnum Powr-shok 180gr. 466ft-lbs 1080fps
40 SW HS JHP 165gr. 352ft-lbs 980fps
OMG!;
357 Magnum BDJHP 125gr. 710ft-lbs 1600fps
40 SW JHP 135gr. 675ft-lbs 1500fps
