I picked up this S&W. It has MOD. 13-1 for the model, a 4in. barrel, in .357, six shot. The strange thing I can't find anything about, is that it has a bobbed hammer. Looks factory. Has anyone run across one like this, and what were they used for? Law enforcement? Military? Any help would be appreciated

THANKS Bill

The federal agency I worked for had ordered some 3" Model 65s back in the 80s and 90s with a bobbed hammer like yours. They weren't DAO and you could still fire SA by starting the hammer back with the trigger.

There were other agencies that ordered the Model 10/13/64/65 in DAO with a bobbed hammer. Not common but not unusual either.

Not sure if S&W offered this bobbed hammer as an option to individual sales.

Thanks for the reply. This gun won't shoot single action, so I guess this gun was special ordered. Just don't know by who.

I can (will) get an argument, but IMHO for carry a DAO revolver like that M&P is a pretty good choice. With a little practice, it is easy to hit the proverbial dinner plate at 50 yards and the chances of an AD (always a problem with a defense gun) is reduced considerably. When I carried regularly, I used DAO, though my guns were always SA capable..

Welcome to THR, Bill.

A common route in this case would be to get a letter from S&W historian Roy Jinks. Unless he retired, you'd send in a form (see link) and, for a fee, he'd send you back a letter detailing when the gun was made, it's original configuration and/or special options, and to whom it was initially shipped.

Good luck in your search!

I appreciate the info. I know I can write to S&W, but I don't want to pay them any money for what little information I want. Just not worth it. I plan on selling the gun, or trading it, at the next gun show. But.. again, thanks for the reply.

PS. Thanks for the welcome?

ALSO.. sorry about the other. Thanks for editing it out.

I have an 80's 10-8 factory DAO with department marked frame and the same style of hammer. I suppose such a hammer could have been purchased and retrofitted it not available when your gun was made.

I found a picture of a police tradein DAO. The rear face of the spurless hammer was not like yours. Of course it could have been done by the department instead of the factory, too.
I really didn't give you a good look at the hammer from my picture, but I think its factory done. It's smooth and rounded. I guess a good gun smith could have done it, but who go that that expense?

I'm not sure when my gun was made. I have a friend who is going to look up the ser # when he gets a chance.

why not sell it on line, it will have to go thru a dealer (ffl holder). I had the hammer bobbed on my carry md 60 S&W 38 spl and it sure is slick drawing from a pocket.

I live out in the sticks of the hill country of Texas. I have to drive 40 to 50 miles just to get to the nearest gun show. There are a few FFL holders in the Austin area, but I avoid Austin like the plague. It's just a pain and not worth the cost. Just the way I feel.

The last revolver I qualified with and carried on duty was a 3 inch 13-3, DAO with a bobbed hammer. It reduced the destruction of sport coat liners and made a very fast, smooth presentation possible out of a Don Hume open top holster.

Having come up on revolvers and been trained that DAO was the only proper way to shoot defensively with a revolver, I never gave much thought to the altered action. But I loved the spurless hammer and wish a few of my other snubs were so equipped.

Nice sixgun you got there. :)

THANKS. I have found DAO revolvers with bobbed hammers on the internet, but none with 4in. barrels. Problem being... It's hard to determine what would be an honest value. I seem to run across several like that. I have a springfield XP chambered in 45GAP. Not ammo you can get a Walmart! HA!

No offense, but I wouldn't read too much into it. A bobbed hammer and DAO conversion are pretty common aftermarket mods, I've had it done to some of my revolvers. It wasn't uncommon for PDs, security companies, and armored car companies to buy a bunch of revolvers and have them modified to meet their needs. Not saying it can't be factory but chances are just a good (or better) that it was done by someone after it left S&W.

You can buy bobbed replacement hammers and having one bobbed isn't particularly expensive. I had my S&W 360J turned into a DAO .38spl/9mm convertible with a bobbed hammer and had a S&W 386 bobbed and made DAO as well, along with a couple of others. Quality work should look like it came from the factory.

IMG_0076.JPG Dollars to donuts that it's been a PPC gun that was retired and returned to civilian/factory dress.
I've got two that I "bobbed" the hammers on. Another had a bobbed hammer and I returned it to original and looks just like yours.
It either had the single action sear removed, or an internal trigger stop preventing the hammer from pivoting far back enough to engage the S/a sear.

Bet its got a slick as glass action, too.

Hey everyone. Y'all were right, I was wrong. I took this gun to a gun dealer, and he showed me where the gun smith mark was of the gun smith who did the work. It wasn't factory. Learn something every day. Thanks everyone for all your input!

PS you are right Goose! the action IS slick as glass.

I bought one of the last S&W factory K-Frame DAO hammers that GT Distributors had in stock, when they clearanced them on evil-bay. It has the firing pin mounted on the hammer face, so pre-dates the models with frame-mounted firing pins. IIRC, it was made for the Model 64. Someday, I will find the just-right K-Frame transplant candidate for it.

If the hammer is smooth, it's probably not factory. I've had a couple factory bobbed M-64s and they are not smooth. I have bobbed a few and when I do it is totally smooth. I sold a bobbed 31-1 just like yours about 15 years ago in Albuquerque.

Bill, a couple of weeks ago I ran across a near twin to your revolver. It was a factory special order for NYPD and so stamped . First I've ever seen. In hind sight, wish I'd bought it.

No stamps on mine other than the gunsmith mark of who did the work. I can only speculate as to who this revolver belonged to, when the work was done. I have to believe is was some law enforcement person. Just wondering... What were they asking for the revolver you almost bought?

Curious- Why do you have to believe that and/or why is this so important to you?

Bobbing the hammer isn’t that unusual, nor are the 13s. It’s entirely possible the gun was owned and converted by a non-LEO.
