Sometimes we just don't have good reasons

I also dislike 357 mag in a handgun because of my love affair with all things 44. 357is an amazingly versatile cartridge, but I just don't care for it in any situation where I get to pick a 44 as an option. Its not logical, but its still the way it is for me...
Me too.:)

Yep, my XP-100 in 7mm BR is a good for a lot of stuff hunting hogs at night isn't one of them though. I was going to make a 7mm BR rifle for that but the cost scared me away. Just bought a model Seven in 7-08 and downloaded it instead.

To elaborate a little more, if I were to get a rifle chambered in 6mm-.284 I’d get one in a long action so I could use 115 grain VLD bullets and not intrude on powder space.

Another example would be Berger has come out with a 170 grain .277 caliber bullet. I’d like to try them in a .270 WSM but would want it in a long action for the same reason as a 6mm-.284.

I have an aversion to the concept-it's like screwing a 16 gauge barrel to a 12 gauge frame. Unnatural!

I do believe it’s unnatural to put a 16 gauge in a 12 gauge frame. Putting a 16 gauge in a 20 gauge frame is seriously cool though IMO.

I can handle a 16 gauge on a 12 gauge frame better than a $85.00 scope on a $1,500.00 rifle though.

It's interesting, because while I quite prefer US cartridges, of all the US cartridges the .30-06 is one of my least favorites. Not however for irrational reasons. In fact I would say if anything nearly all the love for it is irrational nostalgia stemming from it being a US service cartridge.

Just viewed from an engineering perspective it kinda stinks - bigger bore than really necessary (and hence worse ballistics and less penetration), an inefficient taper and shoulder design, and historically filled with powder so poorly suited to the application that all classic .30-06 loads can easily be duplicated in .308 despite the .308 spotting 12 grains H20 of powder capacity. For the same recoil the 7mm mag just stomps it.

This is heretical thinking.

When you hear a clap of thunder in the sky it's The Almighty hunting with His .30-06.....and I'm pretty it's a pre 64 Winchester M70

I work with a guy who thinks if its not a large caliber shoulder breaker then it wont kill a deer. Within 30 seconds of speaking with him theres no doubt he has no grasp of calibers, cartridges, or much of anything gun related other than names of cartridges.

Its a free country, i enjoy everyone having their own opinions of rifles but he is the type to come find you and tell you about your "sissy gun" and all.

The same guy says a .270win is a pityful deer gun, which lots of dead deer would disagree with if they could of course. When asked why he thinks that he says that small bullet going so fast just pokes right through them and does no damage. Its just too fast so he likes his 7mm mag. I tried to explain he was sending basically the same diameter bullet, faster but could tell i was wasteing my time.

He followed that up with a 30-30 and a 30-06 were stout enough to jack-hammer a deer(agree with that) but the 308 was too small and weak. I had fun explaining facts with this one.

He tried a 44mag rifle but even though it dropped his doe, it wasnt powerful enough. It was "missing a 4" as he said.

His 7mag, 444, and 35 Wheelen is what he uses to kill his 100lb 3pts at 40yds, which is fine, he just gets annoying when he speaks about this subject to me.

Oh well, it takes all kinds.

Down here in Texas, I have lost track of the number of guys who feel a .300 Win Mag is an "appropriate" deer caliber, even though our deer average about 125 on the hoof. LOL Meanwhile, guys in Wisconsin are killing 300 lb. deer with 30-30's and .243's. Go figure.

- I used to want a 44 Magnum. Until I got my hands on a 45 Colt. Anything a 44 Magnum can do, the 45 Colt can do better. As a result, I've never owned a 44 Magnum handgun

What the what? Damned lies and calumny! :D

I love .45 Colt, but nothing puts a smile on my face like a .44 magnum. Although come to think of it, .45 Colt makes me smile too. I must ponder this revelation.

This is the idea that it seems so many people have a hard time accepting. I was telling my buddy that the 7mm bullet doesn't care what caliber it was fired from once it's in the air. It only matters how fast it's going, where it hits and what it's made of. And those are not caliber specific.

Like folks saying the 7mm-08 isn't enough gun for elk, but the 7mm Magnum is. I always ask them how far they will take a shot with their 7mm Mag. and they usually say 500+ Then sometimes I do, and sometimes I don't bother to explain that the 7mm-08 bullet is the exact same projectile at 400 yards as the 7mm Mag is at 500.

Other than possible stability issues, this is exactly right.

I generally look for a case that is "balanced" in the sense that the bullet falls out of its velocity window about the point the windage and mechanical inaccuracy becomes intolerable (say a 3MPH wind call puts you outside the vitals). If I can get that and recoil energy under about 22 ft-lbs in the gun of choice I am a happy camper in terms of a plains game type cartridge.

Ive heard the same thing about my 7mm from a guy with a ar and 300. Watching him shoot that 300 was like watching a bobble head in a car wreck.
He was deadly with his AR tho.

I don't really like the 30-06, even though I have 2 (both single shots). Sure, it has been around forever, will do just about anything, and has sired about everything with a 0.473 base except the * x 57 cartridges, but it just really isn't that interesting to me.

However, if someone came out with a .300 Whelen, it would be sort of cool....

I don't have hate for many cartridges, but I do have love for some. The 270 Winchester and the 22 Hornet for two. Why do I love them? Great experiences with them over the years. I've never had to shoot a critter more than once with the 270. The Hornet just performs little miracles for me. Are there better calibers out there? Of course. There's many that will outperform these two. I don't lose any sleep over it. If there's one round I have dislike for its the 410. Other than a good snake round I just don't see much use for it. Some people love it, again I don't lose any sleep over it.

An old friend of mine had a custom rifle in that he used for P-dog in MT. One of his friends captured a hit at 300 yards. The head was separated and everything was about 2" in the air with that head by the tail and the majority of it was a red mist. Perfectly timed photo

The way I heard it, the engineers at Springfield were sitting around having lunch when the commissary roof opened up, and an angel of the Lord descended upon them. The angel said "Lo, you have a passable case for a Mauser rifle although you might look at the shoulder. But the .30 caliber round nose is forbidden to the children of Abraham. Gettest thou a 7mm barrel, and call it a .284 as the metric system is unnatural and wicked in the Lord's sight. Makest thou a Spitzer boat tail as the French have done before you and choose thy twist rate 1 turn in 8 inches." And then engineers were about to heed the angel's command when Albert from accounting wandered by, accompanied by a faint whiff of brimstone. Al pointed out all the .308 1:10" barrel blanks and 220gr round nose bullets they had in inventory for the .30-40. And the engineers did forget the angel's commandment and instead made the .30-03.

And thus did we narrowly avoid having a decent service round for once :D

I lived eight miles out of Boerne in the 90’s. There were so many deer around there it would blow your mind. Some mornings when I left for work there would be 20-25 of them in my yard. When going to Austin and points further north we would take back roads from Hwy 281 to get home. One night my wife and I counted over 150 deer between Sisterdale and Boerne, a distance of about 13 miles. Tons of deer and all were teeny weeny, I bet the live weight of the bigger bucks was well under 100 pounds.

Instead of “The Lone Star State” maybe Texas should be called “ The Flinch State”. You see a lot of people with .300 WinMags and a lot of people with a flinch in Texas.

I also couldn’t handle how LoonWulf told me he cooks pinto beans. He said when he cooks a mess, he gets a pineapple from his yard, slices it, throws it in the pot and cooks it with the beans. That way he can make Hawaiian music.
