I am currently not a contributing member to any activism group. Okay, I know how y'all feel about me NOW  I want to join, and the obvious choice is the NRA. But, I am a little apprehensive after the one-person's-opinion-that-we-need-to-rethink-bumpstocks thing. I am not sure where the best place to put my limited funds would be. I want to make the most meaningful contribution, in line with my own interests. So, the fact that I live in VA might come into play. What do you all think?

Mods: if this is in the wrong forum, I apologize, and would appreciate it if you would place it in the correct area. Thanks.

Hello from a fellow Virginian
Joining NRA is a great start. If you call them they can tell you the options. A base membership is good. A Life membership is better and they have a quarterly payment plan.

One thing you can do is talk to people. If they hate Tim Kaine as much as I do, convince them to vote. We need to get rid of him.

Call your representative. Let them know what you think.
Call the companies who cut ties with the NRA and let them know you are offended and won’t do business with them. Or better yet write them.

Gun Owners of America is another great group. I’m going to join next pay day.

Whatever you can do will help. The anti gun zealots are very vocal we need to be louder, more polite, and show them we represent most Americans and we vote with our wallets.

I just joined the NRA. I will look at the GOA, and consider adding them at a later date. I truly feel, like you said, that the NRA is the best place to start, and others would be good additions, not substitutes.

I STRONGLY recommend NRA and GOA.
Send money directly to NRA-ILA and to GOA. These 2 have leadership that is spot on, the GOA even more so than teh NRA, but the NRA is pretty good.
I avoid SAF since their leader (Gottlieb) was FOR universal background checks, which have been proven and exposed as requiring government REGISTRATION of all firearms (database of who owns what).

If you shop on Amazon they have an option to donate a small % (of their cut of the buy) to a charity of your choice. The NRA ILA is an option there. Makes me smile for Amazon to donate to them :)

Thanks for posting this. I try and avoid Amazon as I can’t stand Bozo (or how ever his name is spelled). But if I do I’m going to remember this and select NRA-IL

Couldn't find the ILA*, but some quick Google-fu says that the ILA isn't a charity, so isn't on the list, but the NRA Foundation is.

NRA is the oldest and mainstream firearms-supporting group. They are solid and do much to promote firearms on every front including training, youth programs legal and lobbying, etc.

That said, GOA is far more activist in the legal front and they have solid chops winning several high-visibility cases.

I've already donated a bunch to the NRA, now I'm going to put money into the GOA (still some into NRA as well).

True, NRA-ILA is not a charity, it is a political action group. So, donations to NRA are taz deductible, but ILA are not. However, ILA is the group that is actually allowed to go among the congresscritters. There's also NRA-PVF, the Political Victory Fund, which is a PAC, IIRC. PVF is who is out there talking to the State and Local politicos.

Now, it's easy to rag on "NRA" for not this and not that--but, any group that is so vilified by the Left cannot be all that bad to join.

I support the NRA-ILA and the Second Amendment Foundation primarily.

Supporting your state organization is always advisable as long as you look them over and agree with everything they're about. Some don't follow a pure 2A line and mix other politics in that you might not agree with or may be too far one way or the opposite and not be a good fit. Ask other THR members that live in your state what they think and research the webpage or FaceBook page for a state group before sending your hard earned money in.

Always remember that your elected officials are most impressed when you send your desires directly to them through email, phone call and snail mail. Letters mean you took your valuable time to make it clear your expectations, phone calls to their office are almost as good. Keep all of those short and to the point and respectful, even if you don't respect their past performance, and tell them "I expect you to defend my rights as a law abiding voter that owns firearms.".

Sorry for any confusion, I was saying that I couldn't find NRA-ILA on smile.amazon.com

.

This is difficult or almost impossible. It’s also why so many people don’t get involved.

I find very few organizations that I agree with EVERYTHING.

I think a better approach is to find ones who’s core values you agree with.
Then then join if you feel that the large majority of the work they’re doing are things you can support.
