Easy Letters to Your Representatives

I unfortunately use gmail as my email program.

When I checked my spam folder today, I found that Google had suddenly classified my newsletters from my very pro Second Amendment congressman, Bruce Westerman, as spam. I quickly indicated that these newsletters were not spam. Hopefully, this solves the problem. However, with the current political climate with Google, I would probably be a good idea to check your spam folder at least once a week.

Form letters, like petitions, don't carry as much weight in congressional offices as carefully crafted, individual letters. Take the time to write out your own letter in your own words. Keep in mind that congressmen receive thousands of letters and the process of responding to them is largely automated. The process can spot form letters immediately.

100% RIGHT!

I once worked on a project with a Congressional staffer who told me that - in his office, at least, but I've got to believe most members of Congress operate their offices in a similar manner - e-mail letter and form letters were scanned for whether they were For or Against a particular position and they recorded a check mark beside that issue. The letters were read only so far as necessary to determine what position they were For or Against.

In the case of individuals who wrote letters and took the time to write them, type them (or compose them on computer and print them out) which were signed by citizens who lived within their district, the letter was read thoroughly before its content was classified into those issues it was For or Against.

Letters filled with swear words or other inappropriate language was discarded as soon as the first expletive was encountered and not counted.

Letters that threatened bodily harm to the member or, more generically, something like the threat of "Second Amendment Action" were referred to the Capitol Police for follow-up.

So, if you want your letter to do the most good, write your own and keep it civil and polite

You are right AlexanderA, but sending a form letter is better than no letter at all. A lot of us are very busy and it takes time to compose the letter then look up the appropriate representative and their email address. At least they know we are here and generally how we feel.

I am going to do this , the last time I did one like this on GOA website I did get an emailed response , I feel even doing this is still better then doing nothing, our side really is not pro active at all to show that there is 2 side of the fence , IMHO

Both is useful. We've posted examples for people to use over the years in sticky at the top of the forum with the request that you change them slightly.

Sending an email that you print and mail is a good approach and only takes a little additional time, paper, toner and a stamp. It carries so much more weight with your elected officials that it is well worth the effort.

Yes, getting a printed letter is nice. However, the mail personnel are required to screen the letters for anthrax spores, ricin, and other nasty substances. This can delay the letter for up to two weeks. If it is an urgent matter, email will go through in a much more timely manner.

The letters available at the above link can be edited to your heart's content.

I just sent the President, My reps, and the governor of Florida three emails. That’s 15 Emails in less than an hour.
Ok so they all got the same three Emails. I doubt they share notes.
Maybe this weekend they will all get a letter. It doesn’t take a lot of time to let them hear your voice.
