Only one gun for all reasons.Even if you know better

I have never had just one gun there has always been a shotgun by the door,a rifle in the corner and a 22 over the fridge.Plus a gun in the barn.All loaded and you did not check “It was loaded always”.
I grew up with that.If you needed a gun there was no time you needed it now.Weasle after the chickens, bear after the calves,drunk a-wholes from Mass.who shot my 4H cow because they thought it was a woodchuck,skunks in the woodpile,snakes the list was big and today it’s even bigger more bears than ever and coyotes we didn’t have those when I was young and the a-holes.
How can one loaded gun deal with all of that?The new rules I have to live by are all firearms locked in a safe and all ammo locked in a “different safe in a different location!Thats just stupid a gun is and always has been a very important tool just like a hammer or a screwdriver or mall or rake or shovel .

The only loaded firearm in my house or vehicle has to be on my person.I took a hard look at my guns and chose my new Ruger 45/45acp.45colt for the day plus shot shells and 6 loaded moon clips for nightstand duty.It’s the best I can think of.My Great Great Grandfather fought a war with England so he could keep a gun loaded to protect his family.
There was no other reason that mattered our fore fathers went to war with the most powerful nation on Earth so we could keep and bear arms.Sorry diddn’t mean to bring politics up just wondered what other’s chose in the only one gun loaded thing and I will not carry a shotgun all day
 
Sounds like you are in a pickle. If I had to make that call with the needs I see in my area being similar to yours, without the bears, maybe one of the .45/.410 revolvers that are out there. We have bears here but they never bother the livestock. Plenty of A-holes too.
 
4 inch .44 magnum /.45 colt, I prefer the magnum but the colt will do fine as well, either can be loaded (Colt round only in a strong enough gun) to take ANY game in the world, or downloaded to take varmints, can be loaded with Specials or Schofields (although in the Colts case itll be much easier to just download the case) for defense work.
 
Is this a living arrangement setup? You're in Vermont, which has no state requirement.

That being said, mine would have to be a lot smaller, something I can conceal in pretty much anything. I'd probably be able to mostly make do with my PF9, but the little P32, with its ten-round magazine, would also be a contender. I have no enemies to worry about other than human. I'd assume that I can swich gun/ammo combos from the safe should my carry environment schedule be subject to change (for example, I want to go hiking and desire a bigger gun.)

My state, unlike yours, is not an open-carry state, except in situations involving lawful hunting, fishing, camping, or shooting activities.
 
A single firearm to do everything passably well for everything.

10mm Glock.
-HD check
-carry check
-hunting check
-range/target check
-gun games check

A .357 magnum 4 inch is very workable as well.

Any rifle/shotgun robs you of carry.
 
My current situation is a touch worse since I still haven’t gotten a new CWL in my new state of residence, and I too am at this time forced to store guns locked in one location and ammunition locked in another location. That said, there might accidentally be a mag for my m9 stored out of the gun but easily accessible.

And to answer the question I thought you were going to ask, yes a shotgun can do it all, but if I’m relying on one gun it’s gonna be a marlin 336. It’s fed 4 generations of Kentucky and occasionally Tennessee families as over the years brothers, cousins, nephews, and neighbors have rented that gun from Grandaddy for the price of whatever ammo was left after deer season. It’s a shame that 336 is so slow to load for bump-in-the-night purposes.
 
I made do with "only" a Mossberg 500 for 20 years. Today it would be a 4 or 6 inch Ruger GP100 in .357 if I cut back to only one gun.

I know from a friend of mine that if your trying to be a foster home one of the social service's requirements is that guns and ammo are locked up, unloaded, and stored separately.
 
Unless there’s some law about how many guns you can carry I’d opt for the two handgun solution. Leave the .45 on your belt and slip a small .22lr in the pocket for weasel control, assuming you can hit a weasel with a little gun ;)

Where is this rule coming from?

I'd have a hard time following that. If the gun's locked in a safe nobody would ever know if it's loaded or not.
 
c'mon you guys... the rule comes from someplace. Wife, daughter, or neighbor lays down the law about gun storage otherwise the grand kids/neighbor kids don't come over to play. State lays down a law requiring safe storage and good citizen is trying to comply to the letter of the law. Regardless of the source, that is the hand that has been dealt. Now play the hand or fold...

I like a 4 inch, big bore revolver. It can handle all social or dangerous critter situations and I can keep it on my person at all times for the ultimate in user/owner control of the firearm. All other firearms and ammo are locked away for hunting or insurrection uses as they are needed.
 
The rule’s are not from the state of Vermont ,but from D.C.F and foster care .I am adopting my 10 year old foster kid and the females in charge like to make sure their jobs are secure by making it very hard to be a foster parent,at $500.00 a month We don’t do it for the money.I was called in for a meeting of concern regarding my kid talking about the 22 single shot rifle I had bought him for Xmas . I knew all of the rules before hand I just thought that they were to stupid to follow to the T.
Well I can see that if I am teaching him to follow the rules I have to too.
