I have a lot of GI ammo cans for storing ammo, but have decided to set some up for storing handguns. The problem is most GI ammo cans is that they pretty much look the same.
So I got to thinking, if I cammo the ones that hold guns, they will easy to ID.
I’ve been playing with The Riptile cammo pattern and decided to do a can in brown..
Don’t worry, I didn’t use a military can. :)
This is what I did.
I used a Blackhawk can that I got on sale last year from PSA.

I cleaned it up and applied a base coat. Light tan.

I then used some netting and olive green paint.

Masked it off to look like claw marks.

Then sprayed it brown.

I then sprayed the masking tape with black paint. If I were to get off my butt and fix my air brush, I would have just sprayed the edges of the tape with black.

I then removed the masking tape .
Not my best work. I think the next one I do, I’ll get a stencil kit from Freedom Stencils and use my air brush.

Seems like a lot of work (wasted time) just to hide a S & W .38 Special when marking as such would solve the problem. Even a coded number/letter would work.

Really doesn’t take that much time. And wasted time? I guess you don’t waste time watching TV.
Labeling cans is fine when you have a few, but I have gotten to the point of needing to start color coding my labels for different calibers.
A painted can would be easier to spot.

The 50 caliber cans are getting expensive. I was going to purchase two more A1+ condition cans for $9 each at my local gun show today.. (The $9 price is as low as you can touch them in my area.) When I looked further I found some blasted and re-painted cans for $7.50 each.

The paint is textured spackled black on silver and they look great. Tops are black enamel. Not as pretty as yours. Great pictures by the way. Thank you for showing them.

Looks to me like you need a filing system rather then color coding.

Don't watch that much TV. Have horses to tend, reloading, harvesting wood for the winter, helping a friend harvest wood for winter, clean weapons, mow my 2 acre lawn. In my spare time I play with my quadraphonic music system. Painting cans.........? Well.

Looks great.

And for quick identification, color and patterns are much more noticeable than labels.

The accountant in me still demands that I use labels and there are some inner-struggles that are just not worth fighting with yourself over, but once again I am in awe at your talent and craftsmanship.

I agree with you about labels. They help out a lot and sometimes is all that is needed. But when you have more then 80 ammo cans, even color coded labels is still a chore when they are all stuck on green cans.
When it comes to craftsmanship, I strive to do my best. I think the can came out ok, but I know that I will do better once I get my airbrush system up and running.. Thanks for the comps.

o_O Does this mean that you sit around listening to music?

GBExpat...When day is done and it's dark outside and all of the chores are done...Yes I listen to music.

At 75 it's nice to just sit back and relax with a glass of whisky and music.
Thanks for the explanation!

What threw me was trying to figure out what "playing with a quadraphonic music system" entailed ... changing components? re-positioning speaker systems? re-cabling the system? or just turning it on, selecting the source and listening to the music ... so I decided to ask. :)

The good thing is that at my age I am still able to listen to music, have a drink and paint an ammo can all at the same time.:) I hope that when I reach 75 that I am able to do more then sit drinking while listing to music.;)

Keep in mind, gentlemen that I have a very active life. Today I loaded 4 pickup loads of wood and off loaded them at my friends house. Of course he helped (as much as a 71 year old can).

Play with my quadraphonic system? Of course. I record my records to reel to reel tape and store the records for safe keeping.

I agree GBExpat. Reloading and music do go together. During reload sessions I have the tuner on in my little mancave

LMAO, you have more ammo then I have and I thought I had a lot. The only time you can ever have to much ammo is when your house is on fire.

Gunny,

Like you I really like Surplus Ammo Cans and keep finding other uses for them. I also recently joined your idea about storing a handgun along with some ammo (and some extra magazines for semi-autos) in ammo cans. I am currently experimenting with making my own foam liners. Trying to figure out how to make clean cuts on foam.

Like you I label my cans but as you say it is a bit of pain trying to find the one you want when they are all painted the same color of green.

What kind of patterns and paint jobs can I get with just using rattle cans? What kind of netting do you use to get that pattern? I like the overall effect.

I just used rattle cans to paint those cans. The netting is from an old safety vest. I did find a net laundry bag but the holes in the netting were to small.
Freedom Stencils is where I got the idea for the Riptile cammo.
