What does your Minnesota CCW permit allow you to carry in a vehicle?

I've had my permit for 10 years now, I got it as soon as a turned 21, but I've never quite found out what exactly I can carry, other than a pistol.

My permit was issued in Minnesota where I live and my buddy says we're able to keep a loaded and uncased rifle in our vehicles with a permit, but I'm not so sure about that. Are there any good websites that I can easily find this type of info? Also, something like Remingtons Tac-14 is intriguing as a compact "truck gun" with more firepower than your typical pistol, but the definition of that specific firearm is so grey that id be worried to carry mine in the truck, even if it was technically legal.

You had best check with your state agency, because you might need clarification on a few things. Firstly, it's not a concealed carry permit in Minnesota - its a permit to carry a handgun, and they don't stipulate whether the handgun must be concealed. Start at https://dps.mn.gov/divisions/bca/bca-divisions/administrative/Pages/firearms-permit-to-carry.aspx

Your buddy should probably check his assumptions as well regarding vehicles. Start here perhaps: http://www.house.leg.state.mn.us/hrd/pubs/ss/ssfiretrns.pdf

Check with your own authorities. And keep you eyes on proposed legislation - there are no fewer than 5 onerous gun control bills presented in your legislature since Febuary.

As already mentioned Minnesota has a permit to carry a handgun. You can carry concealed or open (I've never seen anybody open carry) From the research I've done it appears you can not carry a rifle or shotgun with a Minnesota permit. Long guns must be unloaded while in or on a motor vehicle and must be in a case except under certain conditions.

Get an AR-15 pistol with a brace. Such a pistol 'should' be legal with your permit and handy in a vehicle as well. MIne is a Sig PM400.

I was planning on building one of my stripped lowers as a 458 Socom pistol but the cost and availability of ammo is a deterrent.

I have an IWI Galil Ace GAP51SB 7.62x39 on layaway now. One other reason I went with that specific pistol is if I hunt in shotgun only zone it's legal to use a pistol . Loaded with Federal blue box softpoints it should have plenty of power to ethically take a deer up to 100.

I think the only thing I've heard is you are allowed to transport a rifle or shotgun, uncased, to or from your hunting location. I feel like that was a fairly recent law (3-4 years).

^ this is probably the best advice now that you mention it. Just because it may be legal doesn't necessarily mean the local authorities know it's legal, if that were the case.

Thanks for the quick responses and I apologize I can't figure out the multi-quote function right now

No, but you're in Minnesota and you asked about Minnesota. So if someone posts about Florida the information is useless to you.

Gotcha. I figured people that responded would see I'm asking about Minnesota or maybe there was a website that kept track of laws regarding permits state by state. Thank you!

This is the wording on transporting a firearm according to the MN.DNR

How do I legally transport my firearm? A person may not transport a firearm, including a handgun, in or on a motor vehicle unless the firearm is: • unloaded* and fastened in a case so that no part of the firearm is exposed (a holster is not a legal case); • unloaded* and in the closed trunk of a motor vehicle; or • carried under a permit to carry a pistol or handgun. Under the following circumstances, a person may transport unloaded, uncased firearms (excluding pistols) in a motor vehicle, including ATVs: • while at a shooting range with permission. • while lawfully hunting on private or public land or while travelling to or from a site the person intends to hunt or trap or has lawfully hunted that day. Firearms must be transported unloaded and cased: • within Anoka, Hennepin, or Ramsey counties. • within the boundaries of a home rule, charter, or statutory city with a population of 2,500 or more. • on school grounds. • as otherwise restricted in game refuges, shining, thermal imaging or night vision laws

The closest thing to that I know of is http://www.handgunlaw.us/

It's a pretty useful resource.

Thank you. I think I

Well I'm in Anoka county so that pretty much wraps that up. I have no need to carry a rifle anyway but was curious after my buddy told me it was legal to. I did let him know last night that his information was wrong.

Thanks guys

Here's your relevant statute. Chapter 97B.045 under the Game and Fish code. If I recall correctly, the reason for this is to deter poaching from vehicles.

In summary, your friend is wrong. Your permit does not authorize you to carry a loaded rifle or other long gun in your vehicle.
