What could EMT Yadira Arroyo and Monique Williams have done

It's not very long ago that NYC Bronx EMT Yadira Arroyo was run over by her own ambulance as partner Monique Williams struggled to stop the neighborhood crack head Hose Gonzalez from running her over.

In NYC District Attorney Vance has taken it upon himself to redefine knife laws, guns are out the question as they mean serious trouble for the carriers in NYC although considering what happened to Yadira it may have been the lesser evil but still very bad since she was the mother of 5 kids. The fact that our EMS agency has banned pepper spray doesn't help either.

Granted that letting their guard down gave Gonzalez the opportunity to hijack the ambulance are there any in vehicle fighting techniques that could be used when fighting a hijacker from a passenger seat or when outside the Ambulance.

In these days of terrorism these unarmed most probably untrained in combat arts individuals did everything they could to stop him at a great cost.

As these things go unfortunately, the police arrived on time to ID her almost lifeless body and the city still might not be safe as I understand this guy may actually not stand trial due to an insanity plea and may be released (who knows maybe sooner than later) to hurt and kill again.

I see bad times ahead as we are forced to contend with predators like Jose Gonzalez unprotected by the law and forbidden to use the necessary force to save our own lives and the lives of others.

We need tactics at the very least. Are there any sources for this.

I'm only vaguely familiar with this case. I do not know the details, including how much of a fight was put up by either woman, or whether or not either was fighting to stop the taking of the ambulance, or simply to escape. A link to a detailed synopsis would help, but I'm not going to seek it out just yet. Maybe later.

I'm a working EMT, too, and terrorist-motivated (or otherwise-motivated) hijacking is something that is certainly a concern. With two relatively-untrained (in combat or defense) personnel, the employee mandate should be to simply try to self-extract and allow the unit to be taken. In fact, this should be applied to all personnel.

But, I understand that, for most folks, suppressing the natural desire to stop evil is easier said than done. My partner and I have been doing this for a long time, and both of us have previously been in armed positions as well (he in an armed-security/EMS outfit, and I in law enforcement.) Of course, we're not currently armed, and we do not train on the job in unarmed (or improvised-arms) combat. For EMS around the nation, I agree that we are woefully behind in this.

Incidentally, I would much rather have seen a picture of Ms Arroyo attached to the thread than that of her sneering killer.

I did go looking for the story. Ms. Arroyo leaves five motherless children. The BG is mentally disturbed with a history of arrests.

Well he may be relocated to a neighborhood near you. How should someone like this be handled?

You are aware had that been a police officer instead of a hard working unappreciated mother of 5 this man would be immediately locked up, tried and convicted of a charge that would put him in jail for a very long time if not life.

I would not be surprised at all if race has a part in this as well.

Shivworks has a vehicle combatives class that is pretty much exactly what you are asking for. They offer it as both unarmed/knife only and incorporating firearms. Having some (a couple months) Brazilian Jiujitsu or MMA training is helpful for any of Craig Douglas' classes, but not totally necessary.

Victim: Yadira Arroyo. Suspect:Jose Gonzalez.

I'm not seeing a race issue here.

I'm not "aware" of that. A lot of cop-killers have been deemed incompetent to stand trial. Not how I like to see it go down, but it happens.

As a LEO, we did train for defense in vehicle rush-up situations. In a nutshell, the goal was that, if you could not get yourself secured inside it, you got away from it. Being caught inside an open car door while fighting is a potential death trap. With us, of course, this also involved the vehicle of anyone we were dealing with, not just our own cruisers.

In EMS, however, we have not so trained. That needs to change. Ambulances are serious targets, especially for drug-seekers.

My neighborhood is sadly full of guys like him. :(

Be alert and aware of your surroundings at all times. If you see a guy like this before he sees you, keep it so he doesn't see you. If you are in your car, drive away quickly. If you are on foot and he does see you, don't freeze but also don't start running; if possible keep something between you and him (shopping cart is excellent if handy); keep your eyes on him and be ready to act if necessary. If like me you live somewhere where you can't carry, have another plan.

There comes a time when a prudent person would start looking for a job in a better place. If I lived in New York, I'd get the he!! out.
Assume you're talking to me?

I currently live in North Hollywood, a suburb of Los Angeles. I am in the process of moving to Arizona. Really looking forward to living somewhere clean and peaceful. :)

It's disgusting that anyone has the authority to disarm the innocent and that's what gun control does.

That's a crappy thing to hear about.

I second Akibiker, the shivworks vehicle class is towards the top of my list, but even the ECQC one could have been a game changer. For those worried about the intensity of those classes, I've heard great things about the IAP/IAJJ offered by Cecil Burch.
