Sig P365 9MM - First Range Trip

Before you send your gun to Sig. Have someone else shoot it to see if they can duplicate your issues. Mine shoots exactly to POA-POI at 30'.

Try shooting the gun with one hand with your LEFT hand to see if the slide locks back. There is a 99% chance this is a user error issue. watch this short video. It will solve a lot of problems for a LOT of people ans save Sig from a lot of unnecessary returns.

I shot two-handed, strong hand, and weak hand. The failure to lock back was consistent with all three shooting positions.

Thanks a ton for that video though. This is my first Sig, and it hadn't occurred to me that it might be a platform design ergonomics thing interacting with my normal shooting grip. I've never had this issue with Glocks, SA XDs, or S&W M&Ps. I told the Sig CSR that I'd take it out to the range again. This time I'll be very cognizant of my thumb positioning relative to the slide lock lever. I think the short overall grip circumference probably aggravates that. I'll ask the RSO to shoot it as well. I'm sure he'll be happy to oblige... :scrutiny:

Walkalong, thanks for a very thorough, informative and all-around great review of what I consider SIG's latest superstar offering ...

Thanks for an excellent review. I have to get this out of the way now because I am and have been a Glock fanboy forever. My EDC is a G26 and own all of their 9mm models. I’ve tried my best to warm up to my G42 and 43 but I just can’t. Every time I shoot them my grip breaks, which causes me to constantly regrip the micro grip. My hands are XL and I just can’t hang onto these two models and the recoil is very snappy.

After reading all the glowing reviews, I tracked a 365 down and it followed me home Monday. Today I took it to the range and it ate everything I fed it. Mine does shoot about 2” low, at 10 yards with 147 ammo but POI is dead on with 95 and 124 ammo. The trigger is great for a stock trigger with a short and positive reset. The best attribute, for me, is the recoil control is soft and I don’t lose my grip, even when doing fast mag dumps. This tiny micro shoots like a full size pistol. Sig has engineered something very special into this pistol and it’s no wonder they are in huge demand..

Looks to me that the 12 rounders would be the way to go for carry, looks to me like the extra two rounds simply "square off" the grip at the level of the bottom of the pinky extension on the 10 rounder, makes me wonder why the 12 is not the standard, beyond SIG's way of squeezing an exter $40+ from you, SIG mags are gettin almost as overpriced as HK and FN.

I need to go shoot it some more this weekend with both mags, but at first feel dry firing at would be targets I am not sure the 12 round mag is going to help me shoot it any, or at least much, better, should help with felt recoil a bit. Maybe carry it with the 10 and have the 12 handy? I'll just have to play with it with both mags for awhile.

My only issue with this pistol is a personal one,and yes I bet its just me.

I have been in a few situations as an LEO,and a few close calls as a retiree that required the pistol.

Having had the VERY smaller guns on hand ,made ME [ yes I did say personal issue ] made me feel ---- less armed for want of a better wording.

When [ if ever for you ] the situation gets bad, you like me might feel not as well armed as with a fuller sized 'combat' pistol.

And as I have tried to make the 25 yard and yes 100 yard shots with smaller guns, they just don't measure up for me.

As an example,if heaven forbid you were in a mall, theater etc ,and had to engage an active murderer [ no way out ] ,I would feel 'less armed' than if I had a G-23 or 19 in hand.

Finding out that I shoot either one MUCH better at distances possibly required.

So for the EDC chores that P 365 is just perfect, you can see why I have an issue with it for all CCW places and times.

Your results may be different than mine, your thoughts on this ?.

I get what you are saying, but I am not sure that there will be many situations where you are at 25+ yards and have to defend yourself. If you are in a movie theater with an active shooter at 25 yards vs. a rapid firing AR15, you probably don't stand much of a chance either way, especially if body armor is involved.

I also think that for EDC I want something that is as small and concealable as possible.

There is no way you can prepare for every possible scenario, it is just impossible.

My goal is to cover as many scenarios as is practically feasible within my set limits for concealabilty and comfort. Most encounters are at close range, and I feel good that I have those covered as best as I can.

Oddly I am thinking that I used to pick one in the middle, but now I think maybe I'll pick a really small one for when I absolutely need concealment and a full-size one for when I don't.

That's what I do. I carry with the shorter mag in the pistol and 2 larger cap mags for reload. My small pistol is ap290RS, looking to upgrade to the p365 at some point.

No doubt a full sized pistol is more capable and versatile. No doubt many people would not carry if they had to carry a full sized pistol, so the little one they have with them is better than the laser equipped self guided cannon they left at home.

I shot the P-365 at a small target at the 40+ yard berm and did quite well. I'm comfortable with it. I feel like he odds are small that I am going to need it in a long range situation as a civilian.

I carried the P-365 from when I left work (3:30 PM) until I got home (Just about 30 plus minutes ago), just stuck in my waist band cross draw. In the car for two forty minute drives, in the woods, on the tractor, at the gas station.....I'm getting more and more comfortable with the feel of it.

I have carried a .32 Seecamp a lot of miles, and have carried a NAA .22 Mag mini revolver many more miles than that since 1978, so the P-365 is a step up from those.

YMMV, and I understand your point and the way you feel for you and your comfort level. I make no judgement on someone else's choice of carry weapon, it's a free country, and if I want to be free to do what I want, I must be willing to let others do what they want. :)

As mentioned ,I was an LEO and my standard load out for a full day [ 8 to 16 hours ] was 30 pounds.

Now retired ,I find that a loaded Glock 23 and even a couple of spare mags and a BUG are MUCH lighter !.

And just a few days ago I shot from a rest at 120 yards and was in the zone for a S/D shot.

Yes I was not under fire, but the P365 was not really doable at that long a range due to sighting and my age.

I will simply have to try it at my 108 yard 16" steel target, which is a tough shot for bad eyes and open sights. It's tough enough to hit with full sized pistols or revolvers with open sights these days. :)

The trigger and grip ergonomics are seriously making me consider switching to 9mm Sig 320/365 full time. Selling all the other carry guns.

Interesting. Time for a call to Sig with all the great information as to how you shot that gun. Please follow up as to how this turns out.

On another forum, John Hollister, who works with Sig a lot, told me that the 365 is known to be sensitive to grips that might put your thumbs in contact with the slide lock lever while shooting.

I learned to shoot with my thumbs out of the way of the moving slide (Some 45+ years ago), and have never changed. I don't try to hug the gun with my thumbs, no matter how much it seems to be in vogue.

Nor do I. I use a revolver hold on autos and revolvers alike. It's what I've always done and seems most natural to me, personally. I'm sure others find this to be unacceptable, and that is fine.

I agree with your thoughts. I once found myself pointing a J-frame at two suspects who were possibly armed. It was dark and the distance was around 50 yards. Fortunately they complied and I was able to take them into custody. That little revolver was not comforting to have though.

I guess the point where a pistol is big enough to shoot really well varies from person to person. For me personally, guns around the size of the Shield and bigger shoot really well out past 25 yards.

I kind of wish I was trained this way. Unfortunately thumbs forward on the slide is ingrained on me. It does sometimes cause a failure to lock back on smaller pistols.

I've tried the thumbs forward grip and it doesn't work for me. I have a much firmer grip on the gun with the thumb of my shooting hand down and the thumb of my support hand over it. When I shoot revolvers, I put my support hand thumb over the base of my shooting hand thumb. That helps hold my shooting hand closed. (Of course, that won't work with semi-auto handguns.) I'm beginning to suspect that the thumbs forward grip style presupposes more grip and wrist strength than many people can exert.

I am waiting on a bulk ammo order to confirm this myself. I am about 85% sure this is the problem for me with my P365. I recall at least once remembering whacking my thumb on the slide lock lever or the takedown lever under recoil.
