It's time to get something new. Don't have anything specific in mind, but a 1911 in 10mm might be nice. Don't like rails on 1911s, and have around $1K or so to spend. Not in a rush, so being patient for a used pistol that "new" would be above my price is on the table.

Suggestions please.

Thanks,

If I were in the market for a 1911 in 10mm. I think I would check out Ruger's offering, the SR1911. At retail it's right around your price point and seems to be a well designed, well constructed 10mm.

I have three 1911's in 10mm
Ruger adjustable all black sights needed "enhancing" which I remedied with Dremel & paint, has fired about 350 rounds various HP
Colt Delta doesn't have ramped barrel, Ruger & Kimber do, Delta brass bulges a bit, however pistol has fired ~450 HP with no problem
Kimber has night sights, have put about 350 rounds various HP through it so far
All three pistols eject brass positively & consistently about 3:30
Flush fitting regular mags hold 8 rounds, Wilson that stick out a little hold 9

From what I hear the Ruger has good chamber support and is a good shooter.

I'd consider that one heavily, but I'd be more interested in a Dan Wesson.

Have you looked at the Sig P220? It can be had in a SA variant and everyone I've handled has had an excellent trigger. the website only shows some hideous camo pattern ones, but there is a stainless version out there too. I have a DA/SA version, and the trigger is also nice, but not 1911 or SAO nice. Despite owning that gun, I still want a SA stainless version.

Either way, mine has been an excellent blaster so far, and I like the feel of it over any 1911. It you're only interested in 1911's, disregard.

I am looking for a 10mm as well, but have narrowed my focus down to 2 manufacturers. Rock Island double stack guns look really nice for the money, and the RIA traditional 1911s get good reviews. The other option is a cz pattern gun from EAA, probably a witness limited or a witness elite. I may buy a witness hunter but I don’t like he aesthetics of the lay one as much, and hunting with it is lower on my list than having a pretty range toy.

The Rock Island 2011 (doublestack 1911) IS a really nice gun.

I had one. It was a shooter. Problem was, the darn 2 piece guide rod kept unscrewing under recoil. I sold it off after several failed attempts by my gunsmith to resolve the issue. Yeah, I know, I should have sent it in for warranty work.

Might pick up another one in the future. Saving my pennies for a DW Bruin at the moment but 16+1 of 10mm? Damn, I miss that...

Totally unnecessary; any of it, clueless gunsmith, warranty, or selloff. The two piece FLGR is an inherently flawed gimmick. You could have replaced it with a one piece, glued or soldered it into a one piece, or just put in a GI guide. I got over the two piece very early, even though it took me two to learn. My FLG likes FLGRs, so I just let him Green Loctite them.

Interesting. Just for clarification, I had the 6 inch longslide iteration. Same solutions workable in your opinion/experience?

Follow up to my first post:
Colt Delta Elite: bought it first, didn't "need" anything has fired ~450 rounds HP without fail, cost about $1,100 "limited edition" Ionbond slide.
Ruger: least expensive, "needed" a new plunger tube spring cause factory overkinked original causing mushy thumb safety, and attributed to slide lock open with rounds left in mag at about 80 rounds fired, easily fixed with new plunger tube spring. additional ~350 rounds HP since.
Kimber: "needed" a slight detent on slide stop so it wouldn't lock open with two rounds left, happening before 70 rounds fired, easily fixed by me, zero problem after detent, same mags and ammo, after correction has fired another ~350 rounds HP without fail. About $850 total - Gunbroker.
I have been carrying the Kimber, it doesn't need to fire another 150 rounds of "break-in" to prove reliability to me, 350 rounds of hollow point without incident is sufficient.

My two main handloads (not reloads) accounting for majority of the HP ammo fired are:
10mm Handload 180 Nosler @ 1,228 fps / 603# KE
10mm Handload Nosler 150 JHP @ 1,402 fps / 655# KE

Underwood loads the same Nosler bullets a bit faster, 180 @ 1,250 fps and the 150 @ 1,500 fps

As 460Shooter mentioned, you may want to take a look at the P220. I picked up a stainless SA one a couple of months ago for around $1000 and love it. It has a great trigger and tames the recoil well, even with full power loads from Underwood. The recoil is no worse than my 1911's chambered in 45. The only downside I've seen is that the magazines may be hard to find and are generally in the $40 range, but I've found them on Gunbroker for $25 from time to time.

The OP only has $1000 to spend so Ruger is probably the best bet.

I agree with 460. You can get the Ruger and several boxes of ammo.

I have the Ruger and 2 Colts (1 stainless & 1 blued). The Deltas shoot great. I modified the stainless one and the blued one is stock.
I looked into the Kimber and was going to buy one when the Ruger was announced. I bought the Ruger instead.

The Ruger barrel is fully supported and it can handle full strength 10mm.

I am interested in the Springfield Armory, but I would like something besides the TRP.

Here is my EAA Witness Hunter. I will never get rid of it.

I like the Razorback and the Bruin for 10mm (no experience with either and am a .45 5" guy), but almost every 1911 I see these days have a combat (Commander style) hammer and a curved beavertail GS. Both of my current 1911 guns (.45 and .22 LR) have the standard Government hammer and grip safety, and I have never had a problem with that.

Is it popular because of the high hold on the grip currently in vogue, style bling, or?

Just asking the question.

Jim

A search on GB didn't result in any of the Stainless SA versions. I'm sad to say I may have missed my opportunity. But at least I have my two tone version. the Legion is nice looking too. The price is not.

Thanks for all the suggestions. The Ruger & RIA are on the short list. The double stack RIA is interesting, but not knowing how it will fit my hand, I need to put that one on the back burner until I can find one to wrap my fingers around. I checked on the Razorback, the P220 and the EAA. With the Razorback & P220, I'd need to wait until a good "used" deal presents itself. The EAA ( Witness ) is easily in the price range, but not really the 1911 platform ( same with the P220 ).

I have a Colt Gold Cup that while I have no interest in replacing - I do like the idea of augmenting.

The only one really on my radar is the Dan Wesson. I'm thinking the long-slide because.... well, just because!
Todd.
